Church calls for Sony BAFTA nomination to be revoked

Dean of Manchester Cathedral says Resistance: Fall Of Man selection is ‘a disgrace’

The Church Of England has slammed BAFTA's decision to allow Sony's Resistance: Fall Of Man to be nominated for an award at this month's ceremony.

The Church called for Resistance to be banned in June, after it became aware that Sony had used an in-game visual depiction of Manchester Cathedral without permission.

Now the Dean of Manchester Cathedral, the Very Rev Rogers Govender, has attacked BAFTA for "condoning" the behaviour of the platform holder.

According to the Press Association, the Dean said in a statement: "It is a disgrace that Resistance: Fall of Man has been short-listed for a BAFTA.

"Sony has admitted that they did not have permission to film or use Manchester Cathedral in their computer game and have said 'we are confident there is no legal requirement for us to seek permission'.

"BAFTA should not be seen condoning such behaviour unless they are saying it is acceptable for producers to walk into historic buildings and film interiors - ignoring contracts, rights and liability."

The Dean called on Sony to abide by new "sacred digital guidelines" as he feared other buildings would be cloned for "virtual desecration" in future.

The BAFTAs will take place at Battersea Evolution on Tuesday, October 23rd.

Hang on a sec, stop worshipping something that doesn't exist? So you are in contradiction to your ownself with your words...

If you do not believe in God then fair enough.

However There are more people that do than don't.

Anyways on topic the Church is right that it shouldn't be shortlisted in all fairness if this game had a Mosque being raided with the character blowing things up in it then I am sure many Muslims would be outraged by this.

Also Gears over Resistance any day.

The church has not a legal leg to stand on, they just wanted to in the news again. It's a story about nothing.

There is absolutely no reason for Resistance to not be nominated.

Irrespective of religious beliefs (and I myself am a non-believer); I think Sony were in the wrong to include this building in the game, regardless of whether permission needed to be sought or not.

why should we respect religions when they offer no proof or reason for their absurd claims?

churches make for excellent game environments and they should not be allowed to spread their 'do as we say or burn in hell' attitude into a rational and creative industry

Religion is the cause of most wars anyway. If churches don't want to be associated with war, then they're just hiding from the truth.

Have some respect

It's not about legal right*****issions etc. It's about disrespecting someone else's beliefs. Like "Goku" says, if you do not believe in religion, that's fine, that is your decision and you are entitled to that.

So by the same token, shouldn't the beliefs of those who DO believe in God also be entitled? Do we not get respect and understanding in the same way you'd demand it from us? What if the tables were turned? What if more people believed in God than those who didn't and it was everywhere and you simply couldn't turn a corner without bumping into something religious? Wouldn't aethiests feel in a minority, yet still demand their rights?

A church is a place of worship, reflection, mercy and salvation. It is not a place to be desecrated in a computer video game by people who have no respect for Christianity in particular and are out (in all forms of media) to destroy/disrespect it.

You, as a moral (albeit aethiest) citizen of whatever country you're from, should DEFEND such human rights as being sacred, because by the same token, you're rights are also being respected. You should view this disrespect as if it was a personal attack on you and your aethiest views. You should stand up for those who cannot do so for themselves or those in minority or those who's views are not being heard and upheld, because some day, you may be in need of the same respect and will expect to be treated fairly as well.

In the meantime, we who believe and live in hope, will continue to "turn the other cheek".

Peace to all.
