Sony confirms move to make 40GB machine only available model
SCEE is to discontinue the 60GB PS3 in Europe, leaving its new 40GB machine as the only available SKU in the territory.
The platform holder has told MCV that is looking to sell through remaining stock of the 60GB SKU in the run up to Christmas.
On Friday, the platform holder announced that it is to reduce the price point of the 60GB model down from £425 to £349 – a clear move to tempt consumers into buying up the remaining allocation.
A SCEE spokesperson told MCV:
“We announced our reduced offering on the 60GB model last week. We’re looking to sell our remaining 60GB stock, after which the 40GB model will be the only SKU available in Europe.
“We anticipate that the 60GB stock should be available until Christmas, but of course it depends on how quickly it sells.”
The new 40GB model announced by Sony features only two USB 2.0 ports and no longer includes the multi memory card port. It will also lack backwards compatibility with PS2 games.
It will hit the High Street on Wednesday.

Oh dear...
IMO a very stupid move by Sony, they give the USA an 80gb model at $600 (£300) whereas Europe is again shafted even harder.
Xbox 360 premiu on play.com is £199.99 it comes with everything you need for online play and HD gaming.
40gb PS3 £299.99 - £100 more and is fully loaded with blu-ray drive, wireless etc but is lacking a decent online service, no HD cables and lacking any decent games in comparison to the Xbox 360.
Weighing in the 2 machines its clear that Sony are pushing blu-ray more than gaming.
Whereas Xbox 360 offers a better model that is the Elite with a 120gb hard drive Sony is degrading their machine with less parts.
It is very clear that with the huge losses Sony is suffering they are passing their suffering onto the European consumer whilst Japan lavishes with extremely cheap prices, better bundles and along with USA also.
I think its safe to say that Microsoft despite their hardware problems which have now been rectified to some degree have invested and offered the consumer the best service possible.
If Microsoft were to do what Sony are doing I think Microsoft would be the laughing stock of all Sony fans...
Re: Oh dear...
I agree. Microsoft are clearly winning at the moment. A silly move by sony in my opinion.
Re: Oh dear...
Yeh its a quite a silly idea.
I just wonder what happens if they sell all the 60 gig versions and move onto 40gig before christmas what will happen to those people that may not know you cant play PS2 games on them and go out and buy a few to play on it.
Since as soon as you open it you cant return it in full at most stores like Game, there could be quite a few pissed of people.
oh my god
this is not a very good move i bourght the 60gb ps3 yesterday in the uk i mean that chrome finish on the silver part is just silver plastic this is sonys worst merstake but i supose we can look forward to the 80gb ps3 after xmas
