Sony explains decision to discontinue 60GB PS3

‘40GB machine represents all the power of PS3’ says platform holder

SCEE has given the reasons behind its decision to phase out the 60GB PS3 in Europe.

This morning, the format holder told MCV that once remaining stocks of the SKU had sold out in the territory, the 40GB PS3 would be the only model available to consumers.

The firm comments that the ‘missing’ features lacking in the 40GB SKU are ‘easily upgraded’, and that it believes backward compatibility with PS2 – a function the 40GB model lacks – is ‘less important now than when we launched’.

The firm explains in a statement:

‘Our offering in the UK market place for Christmas are the two 'sku's announced on Friday, but as the 60GB stock is depleted the £299 40GB SKU will be the only version available going forward.

‘The 40GB machine represents all the power and potential of PlayStation 3 at a very compelling price.

‘Whilst the feature set of the 40GB is a result of extensive feedback and research, all the 'missing' features should some consumers require them are easily upgraded with USB memory card readers, USB hubs, or bigger external USB or internal HDs.

‘The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility - and this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched - as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas.

‘Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences.’

no backward compat pisses me off, surely it could have been done by software emulation like the european 60GB PS3s. A lot of people still buy xbox games off me to play on their 360's, it keeps the format alive. Oh well..

Well, people who already have backwards compatibility will not lose it ;-)

Aside from that: it makes no sense to me since the BC in Euro PS3s are software. Why cancel that?

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE THIS IS A RANT FROM A OWNER OF A 60GB PS3 SO THIS IS NOT A FANBOY BASH!!!

Backwards Compatibility is important to a lot of people and is a big Mistake in removiing it. If they have to remove it than they should still offer the 60GB PS3 w/ B/C so people have a choice but instead they choose the route of if you want the B/C in your PS3 you better buy it now or be screwed.

Now they should have stuck with what they said in the 1st place only bringing out one SKU and one SKU only!!! They should have just brought out the 60GB Model in all Territories and when people complained just lower the price. They could have lowered it to $499.99 and if they still complained then lower it to 449.99 instead of having so many different SKU'S

First it was

US & JAP
20GB & 60GB

EU
60GB

Then it Was
US
60GB & 80GB

JAP
20GB & 60GB

EU
60GB

Now it's going to be

US
40GB & 80GB

EU
40GB

JAP
20GB & 60GB

And Yet Rumors are already Spreading that amother change will be coming

US
40GB & 80GB (Maybe) Really who knows we might lose the 80GB

JAP
60GB & 160GB ( Loss of 20GB and probably soon to be losing the 60GB knowing Sony)

EU
40GB

If this is True come on Sony get your Head out of the Sand and stop with all the SKU'S

There letting you have a choice here!

What happened sony? Which muppet in the sony boardroom decided to drop Backwards compatibility? Its IMPORTANT. You shouldnt of done this and track down the idiot that gave this the go ahead and FIRE HIM! (or her!)

""Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer. And access to the library of content people have created, bought for themselves, and accumulated over the years is necessary to create a format. PlayStation is a format meaning that it transcends many devices -- PSOne, PS2, and now PS3" - Phil Harrison, Sony, December 2006."

I remember being quite disgusted when i heard the chip for backward compatibility was being removed from the european 60GB models. But now no backward compatibility at all. Thats a bad. bad move. They have greatly underestimated this feature. The 60GB managed it without the chip in the end through emulation, so how hard would it have been for the 40GB?

BC on the PS3 is achieved through software for PS1 games, and a combination of software and the PS2's Graphics Synthesizer chip which is included in 60gig models. This chip has been removed from the 40gig models (saving $27 per console manufactured, apparently) and IS NOT the emotion engine, that was a separate chip.
That is why PS2 games won't work on the 40gig console.

First you complain about the prices and then sony drops them to a REALLY GOOD PRICE for what a PS3 is and what it includes. Then you complain about BC not being included.

If it bothers you that much then you can buy a PS2 for about £50 on ebay. Christ.

To be honest, I bought a 60gb PS3 with BC, and I couldnt be happier, it really was worth the price. I think the decisions sony are making now are a way to boost sales, probably for christmas (lowering the price etc.)
Really what they should be doing is working on making the games and console outstanding, which it is really, not take stuff away. All this is really because they're worried that their sales won't pick up.

360 is the gaming console if you want games like halo...
but most people that bought PS2 want games like Singstar, Buzz etc. Halo3 and that type of games doesn't sell over 130million consoles...

It's really funny to see all this negative media hype around the PS3, but everybody very quickly forgets the price
you paid for the 360 console when it came and that there wasn't any games either...
Now the 360 have some decent hardcore (Halo etc.) games available, some of the multi console games looked
better on 360 because of higher priority from the developers, but that's soon going to change.

I fail to comprehend the lack of BC. The PS2 and its games are a cash cow for Sony. Every PS2 game that is sold to a PS3 owner is extra license money for Sony. My stores still sell God of War 1 and 2 like crazy. Many of those are sold to PS3 owners. Also, why make existing casual gamers like Singstar owners unhappy? Not everyone will like the online orientation of the PS3 version.

Don't you guys realize that the PS3's PS2 emulation wasn't really that good anyways. Anyone who bought a PS3 to play PS2 games was an idiot.Sony made a website to show which PS2 games run well on what model and the 60gig did have alot that worked, but they were some AAA titles that had freq dips in framerate, but hey, it is in HD right? All i was waiting for was the $399 price tag. I already have a ps2 (bought it two months ago) and it plays all PS2 and PS1 games 100% so i never have to worry about bad framerates unless it was a poorly developed game. Plus, if you want a PS2 anyways, they are dirt cheap nowadays or will be very soon. I don't get all this crying. The 360 has shotty BC. You know how many titles I got the "need to go online" pop-up tab? Anyways, I was unhappy with the future of the 360 (yes now is it good to own one, but when I plunk down $400+ for video game system, I don't just think of the games right has now but for the next 6+ years, has anyone here heard of RayTracing?) Plus, PS3 has FREE ONLINE. So lets do some math, I plan to own my PS3 for at LEAST five years, at $50 a year for online with XBL, that is $250 you wasted just play games online...now that is HORRIBLE!

Strangely, the 40GB PS3 DOES play PS1 one games, PS2 compatibility has been removed for licensing reasons... apparently there are licensing fees that have to be paid in relation to the PS2 compatibility, not sure exactly who too but it reduces the costs of producing the machine not having it...

I don't know who they consulted for their "research", but having that backwards compatibility is a big selling point for PS3 owners and for people considering the systems. 95% of the time I'm playing my PS2 games on the system. I'm sure that as the years go on, it'll be less important, with better and better games out there, but this decision was made too early in the life of the PS3. Until 2008's done, I just don't see any way about it. There's not enough games out there or quality games out there to keep you occupied on the PS3 library itself. At the minimum, Sony sould have waited another year. Glad I picked up my 60 Gig EE version when I did. I'd hate to think I'd have to "settle" for either emulation or this new version. Europe may be first to get the shaft on these sub-par systems, but you can bet it'll all find it's way here to North America soon enough.

I purchased my PS3 in March for just under $750.00 (CAN)! I am NOT wealthy (in monetary terms) by any stretch of the imagination. It has proven to be worth every penny! If BC is important to you get off the fence/couch and buy one NOW! All of the whining about the price of a piece of technology that is clearly worth it, when it's features are totaled, has forced SONY's hand.
This is exactly why people are subjected to horrible working conditions and companies resort to ridiculous business practices... because before any other consideration, you need your tube socks for 1.99!
If it's not worth it to you, so be it! But don't pretend that you can get something for nothing ... there is always a cost!

*Personally I have played only 1 title that required BC and I certainly could live without it or could have kept my PS2???

the rumor is that the ps2 will be cut to £50 for christmas so if you're really desperate to play the old games just buy one; come on tv's come with enough inputs and it's not like it actually takes up much space;

and unless the game was made in hd it's never really going to be hd;

the more likely reason it's being dropped anyone is so people will pay for the downloaded version on to their ps3's; surely that's in the pipelines.

Probably an 80gb version on the way in the new year too

The BC thing doesnt overly worry me, as Im an Xbox man and have no PS2 games at home. The point is, Sony have done a really clever job at marketing for ******s. Here in Australia, until the release of the new 40gb model, they were selling a bundle with the 60gb console, an extra controller, as well as Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of man. This was priced btwn $959 - $999. The new 40gb version, comes sans the games and the extra controller - for $699. So essentially, if I then go and buy a new one, by the time I've realised it comes with no games or extra controller (so you can sit at home and play with the media bar!) and you go and buy them, you've then spent at least $100-120 on the games, and $70-80 on the controller, bringing the total price to around about the same as the previous bundle, if not more. Why should I spend the same amount of money on a machine that has less features - BC or not? I managed to get one of the very last 60gb consoles in the country, and Im happy as a pig in the proverbial. I feel sorry for all those people who have no choice but to pay for the newer cut-down version and end up paying the same money to do so. The console hasnt really been made cheaper at all - only in the eyes of stupid people.

I dont know who is in charge of ps3 sales marketing but he/she is a fool of astronomic proportions. BC is of major importance. as the ps2 proved if you get the games right the console will follow. the ps2 was not the best console but it had the best / more games than any other and so it won on sales. why start all over again when it could have been buy the ps3, we still has all the best games and the consoles better and were making more! they could have milked the ps2 library of games as a sales + instead are we to see billions of useless games dumped in 5 years time because there are no more ps2 consoles and the ps3 marketing team were fools. the only way to bring the 60gb back is not to buy the 40gb version, when sony sales drop like a stone theyl bring it back pronto and drop the price.

To the smarta**e Sony Marketing guys, just browse all the feedback here and you will get an overwhelming view from the Great British Punter ...... you got it wrong in withdrawing the backwards compatable 60gb. From a previously loyal customer who has now bought a 360 rather than have a 40gb forced on me.

BC is a major factor to a bigger proportion of playstation fans than not and as the playstation 3 is still trying to establi****self, after a stuttering start due to high price, then what a totally inspired decision it was to remove one of the most important features and selling points.....
After a delayed launch and very limited titles sony and the games developers. were starting to catch up, with the likes of the xbox 360, by extending the software library. This would have been great news for xmas however I feel sony has lost potentially millions of sales, by a blunderous decision,of gaussian proportions.
A simple price lowering and greater game library would have won everyone over, but what a collossal mistake Sony have made. If the person responsible worked for me, he or she would have a miserable jobless xmas......well done Sony..you are an example of how not to read the consumer..........

Sony are either idiots or have a very good marketing ploy. The only place you can get a 60Gb UK model is on ebay where they are exchanging hands for extrordinarly large amounts of money - and the reason? Backwards compatibility!!! Speaking as someone who left it to late to get one, we are wondering if we should just buy the Xbox 360 and keep our PS2, Blueray is just not that important to us. Who is to say HDD wont win the market??

It’s obvious what’s happened, the manufactures have run out of the parts needed for the 60gb version. If Sony can get £350 for a 60gb machine they will, wait till after Christmas, when they’ve made more parts the 60gb will be back on the shelves.

There are not many 60gb models available now, and those that are, have a ridiculous price tag, even second-hand. But everyone buys whatever they make, rather than have them make whatever we want to buy, so if you want to line their pockets, go ahead. Otherwise, hold out for something that is really better than the rest, and not JUST NEW. It is time we had region free games and movies, and BC games.

My kids are going without their ps3 xmas gift, simply because I refuse to buy a console I cannot use when we return to Japan. It looked good if it were region free games at the very least, and movies if poss, in HD glory. And what? I would need to lug my other old consoles back, in order to play ps1 and ps2 games? So where is ps3 better than a computer, as my kids seem to think? Compare the prices, and the games are also over priced.

That was a really stupid move from Sony! Isn't there some sort of petition to bring it back. They say that all the functionality of the 60gb can be brought back by upgrading int/ext hard drives or adding USB memory card readers. But that means more money to fork out on it. And who wants memory card readers and external hard drives lying around under your living room TV? Why not just pay out a little more at the start and have all the functionality as part of of one unit?

I appreciate that some people don't want to fork out too much for a console, in which case buy the 40gb version, but don't phase out out the 60gb version completely you ******s.

Bring it back you ignorant fools!! you don't know what the British public want!!!! I don't know anyone who actually WANTED to get the 40gb version. Most people prefer to scour eBay for second hand 60gbs than rather than brand new 40gbs because, to be honest, 40gbs are ****e!

Just read this,

" Belgian games retailer Games Mania has said that while the new 40GB model is selling well, some 40 per cent of the new consoles sold so far have been returned due to hardware defects that result in the console being unable to read Blu-Ray and other discs"

"other discs" I wonder is that's the "2nd tier" percentage, thinking the console is broken when it fails to play ps2 games.

There was a reply that said "Seems it has been disproved" but didn't say how.

Looks like it has been disproved

"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) can categorically deny that there is a 40% failure rate on the newly release 40GB PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) as has been reported on a Dutch website. Having launched in October, the 40GB PS3 has encountered the same industry leading, very low failure rates, comparable to the low level failure rates of the 60GB PS3."

..you really made my day!!!

so, oer xmas my son's PS2 died. No surprise really. He had it for four years so I am surprised it lasted that long.

Now here is the problem:
Its January so I have seriously missed the 60gb boat, but my son has 70+ PS2 games and 50+ PSX games which he still plays on a regular basis. If I buy him 2 consoles, he will constantly need to switch scart leads depending on what he wants to play. Also, I just cant be bothered to clutter up his bedroom with 2 consoles. Yes, I hear the "why not trade the games in" argument, but he saved up for the majority of his games and ill get an exchange value of less than £3 on a lot of his titles...

its times like this that I await the hackers to get past PS3's security system so developement of an emulator for PSX/PS2 can again be a reality. Of course that also brings other ramifications, but in this instance, Sony can have no arguments...

Its now just a matter of time

will never buy another sony product as long as i live and am getting rid of what i have.
if they expect customer loyalty they should show respect back - not you only bought it last year now buy it again on this format, (fifa 08 etc)

already own a ps2 and 360, was looking to buy a ps3 but now will not be . 1 of the main points for upgrading to a ps3 was being able to play ps2 games, no point in getting a ps3 now if you can`t play classics like Alone in the dark. sony give Xbox and Wii a helping hand again.

Those of you that say STOP complaining obviously have NOT spent £££'s already on Ps1 consoles and PS2 Consoles and all the Games to go with them.... SO YES sony stuffed up... we have helped make the Playstation brand what it is....now they say BUY IT ALL again in the PS3 guise,.,. Nobody is saying a PS1 or PS2 game will look good on a PS3 console... its the fact why should we have 3 consoles sat here... when 1 was POSSIBLE... whether it looked good on screen or not...

IF it was ALL about cost as I see said, why if you look on EBAY are pre-40GB uk consoles fetching over £500... that being the console able to play ALL games... says a lot...

I agree with an earlier post here... whoever at SONY that decided to make it NOT backward compatible OFF the shelf.. should be sacked.. I for one WILL not be buying a PS3... I have spent my "Earned" cash on upgrading my PC...

If backwards compatibility is NOT so important, why do so many people want it.... This to me smells of game producers trying to make us buy updated versions of games we already own..... I hope it backfires on them.....

It simply down to choice....if you buy a 40gb NON backward compatible PS3 you allow Sony to walk all over you.... it may look WOW on screen.... but so does my PC and TV set up.... just would have been nice to finish it off with a PS3... instead I will do without...

Bl**dy Disappointed

I'm one of many people with a large number of PS2 titles & will want to be able to play some occasionally. My children are young & have a number of kiddy-type PS2 games that they'll keep playing for a couple of years.
I wanted a PS3 so that I could get the occasional next-gen title that stood out, but I don't have the spare time to play that many. If my kids could also use the PS3 for their PS2 games then I would have bought one & I'm sure we would have bought a number of PS3 games over the coming years.
Without the BC I won't buy a PS3 just for myself. I also don't want to have to keep an additional old PS2 box under the TV with extra wires & inputs to swap.

If Sony realise that not everyone will be happier with a cheaper but worse, less useful product & reintroduce a BC PS3, then I'll buy it. If they don't, then I won't buy a PS3 because I'm p***ed off with them. They've always portrayed themselves as caring with the previous Playstation backward compatibility, but this now feels like a betrayal (apparently for the sake of $27 per console).
I'll see what else happens over the next year or two, then I'll either get the latest XBox or the PS4 (will prob be out by then & I will have no PS3 games that won't work on it)!

bring back the damn 60gb, it is unreal that a huge company like Sony are just being tight fisted when it comes to cash. i can see why people are sayin backwards compatibility is a waste of time compared with the Next Gen Games but then again thats what 'They' promised before it was released and as for this "easily upgraded" bull, well that is beyond a joke, we shouldnt bloody have to upgrade it should be built with the parts in it, so Sony... lack of backward compatibility is why I chose the X360. 65 games for the PS3 says sony - but half of them are **** and the rest only seem to cater to RPG or 1st person shooter fans! And to people who say, 'buy a PS2 then,' answer is: 'Why should I clutter up my living room with various consoles when it would have been easy for Sony integrate everything into one console like Microsoft did?'
And to people who say, 'Why would you want to play PS2/1 games anyway coz they're not HD?', answer is: 'Because some of them are the greatest games ever made - it's not always about the graphics.'

Playstation is supposed to be about gaming first and foremost - they should have concentrated on that and not bothered with the blu-ray player in my opinion. And they are wondering why they've lost the market to Microsoft??

Humans have always struggled with the concept of letting go of the past and moving into the future. The same is happening now.

Those who want to play PS2 games can go and buy a PS2 console. Those who already have a collection of PS2 games will also have a PS2 console as well.

I am glad Sony has removed the B/C for the sake of reducing price. Why should people who want the PS3 simply to play PS3 games, pay more because of the B/C feature?

I think it is a good move from Sony. I can get te 80GB version of PS3 for a lower price than the 60GB version. Furthermore since some of the features that were optional have been taken out the machine is also less noisy and more energy efficient.

The only thing that i dont agree with is the fact that Sony keeps p*ssing about by offering different versions at different times and different regions. Just keep it the same for everyone please and Bob will be your mother's brother. lol

well what can i say ....
totally true some bastard at sony decided to come up with different models of ps3s... stupid ideas..******s
20gb blacktrim, 40gb and 80gb no memory slots and bc, 2 usb slots. what next.....
they should only have one true model which is the 60gb model .. the nicest of all models, chrome trim ,4 usb slots ,and not to mention b.c. the way a next gen console should be and i forgot blue ray finishes it of.
i badly want a 60gb model now i cant get one except a used one.
i think some sony bastard thought it would be too expensive to put b.c in 40gb and upwards, also memory stick slots why remove it , if i did get the 40gb model knowing there was somthing on the left hand side of the console ... which is thoes hidden memory stick slots ... underneath it 2 extra usbs .. i would be damme upset infact i will not get 40gb or 80gb .
i would get 60gb a used one if i am lucky like new..
sony is thinking of the future if ps3 had b.c. then playstation 4 should have b.c. extra hardware cost a lot of money to manufacture, to cut down cost they enden up sacrificing few things...well its people at the end of the day
people want cheap price but better hardware and sony is thinking about money or loss, from release day they enden up with a big loss looseing around 140pound per unit.
to them that is a big loss..that what they think...bastards
it is money ..if sony didnt care about money then the 60gb would be on the shelfs today till ps4 is released.
i bet you sony will come up with a slimmer smaller looking ps3...in the future.

well what can i say ....

totally true some bastard at sony decided to come up with different models of ps3s... stupid ideas..******s

On a buisness level this is clever from sony in a sense they are pushing the older models out thus making more profit on the PS3 and future machines. Backwards compatability is just as important to the consumer/gamer as it's always been. If you start to discontinue the older PS2 and PS1 games from being played on newer future models then people are forced to buy the seperate consoles and the more expensive games for them. It's all about the money!!!

Sony will still make updates to the backwards compatability in the 60 gb ! just not as often ....
i know this because i own one (eu version) and i play ALL my ps2 games on it
i know what you all mean though
It was a bad decision from sony to stop making the 60 Gb for lots of reasons

It's all about the money!!!!!!!!!! $60 at least for one new game. All of us who have ps2 have a great many games. Also some of us have guitar hero, rockband or world tour, now have to buy all new equipment and the games to go with them to play on the new consoles. Just like any other consumer product, they make them not last very long or outdated (no parts , service or not compatible) so you will have to buy the new "improved" version at greater cost and all new games that cost even more. I'm really glad the guy in one of the previous posts can afford to buy all new games that will be outdated again in several years. I bet he doesn't have any children to support, so he can spend all his money on video games to play in his mother's basement.

This move should not have happened to PS fans BC for PS2 games was very important. What happened to PlayStation is only console to allow you to play all your games? I think they should rerelease the 60GB SKU but include a 200GB HDD.

When i bought the 60gb ps3 i knew what i was doing. I knew about the ps2 games working on it. Its hooked up to our tv in the living room so some of us wants to play games some of us wants to watch tv. My solution was to knock down the inside of our two sheds and make it into a games room great everyones happy but the slimline ps3 in the play room doesnt play ps2 games and my 60gb in the living room does. Not impressed now why did sony do it oh i know so we have to buy the more expensive ps3 games so more money in their back pockets
