Are they just trying to upset consumers?

Okay first off I own both the 360 and the ps3...so no screaming fan boy at me.
Okay first comments at last yes the 40gig!
But wait.. what the hell no backwards combatibility and less usb ports and no memory card reader...
This begs the question not only did they upset the european market with the lack of total backwards combatibility and the huge differance in price compared to our american and asian counterparts.
It makes me think is the sony stratergy to just put people off the ps3 in europe?
Okay yeah something like 60 new titles before christmas but the main selling point for the console when it was first announced was its backwards combatibility and blue ray player function...
So to me this has been as a big v sign to europe from the company..
So my advice go buy the 60 gig before it sells out :S
or your stuck with an inferior version of the ps3...

Smart move

I personnally think it's a smart business move by Sony. The company never could afford to sell the console at the price they were already selling it at so to meet punlic demand something had to give. In the end it appears it were some features that in the long run won't bother the mainstream market. Yes, those in the know will have issues with changes, but to be honest with you imho they should then pick up the fully featured console at the reduced price now. At the end of the day you get what you pay for...

Nobody seems to see this for what it really is: Clearing the channel for the arrival of either the 80GB version already being made for the US market or, more likely, a new 120GB version which will occupy the higher price level.

This is a brilliant move by Sony. Cheaper PS3s mean more PS3s are sold. And as for backwards compatibility, if people are THAT bothered about not having it either buy a 60GB PS3 now, or buy a dirt cheap PS2!!!

I have never touched the backwards compatibility since launch day as I bought my PS3 for next gen games and movies.

Most new gamers wont even know the 60GB PS3 can do backwards compatibility, so wont care if the 40Gb can't.

Absolutely stupid... Unless the 60GB hardware suddenly makes a re-appearance with a 150GB+ hard drive in it and the new TV hardware bundled with it.

Sony has shown us in the past they're consoles are able to evolve along the way. Looking at games that came out for the ps1 or 2 in the beginning vs the ones after a couple of years, you can clearly notice big changes. So lets presume the same thing happens now, than in that case, it will take a while for Sony to prove its worth.
Right now the 40gb version seems like the best way to go to compete in the ongoing price wars, and after all, adding backwards compatibility is said to be very easy in the near future (probably firmware).
We all want to play the new games now anyway right? you're not going to buy a ps3 to be playing ps1/2 within the next few weeks after that.....

To be honest, if you want backwards compatiblity that bad, keep around your PS2 and save a few bucks or dive in for the 60 gig right now. Chances are Sony's not going to just let backwards compatability die entirely, as I think it's likely that they're going to introduce a better "Elite"-like model. They've seen that the 360's model structure work, what works about it is that those who want a bare-bones next gen system can hav eit and those who want all the bells and whistles and extras can have their cake and eat it too.

Nigel Mansell is a God.

Like many, I thought B/C was a very important feature of the PS2 when I got it and the PS3 as well. But since getting the later consoles, it's not important at all and haven't really used it. I still have my old PS1 and PS2 and if I got really desperate to play an old game, I see no problem plugging in the old console. It's only convenience of not having to dig out the old machine that I think puts people off.

I can't see the problem. Everyone backed off from buying the PS3 due to price, so Sony respond but had to make cuts otherwise they'd lose too much money, and then people moan! I'm sure most the moaners already have a 60GB PS3 anyway!

What's more, with the sheer power of the PS3, there's nothing to say a complete software B/C function won't be available in the not too distant future anyway.

And I'm sure that Sony have got a new even higher spec machine in the pipeline as well - 80GB or 120GB perhaps - which will feature the 4 USB ports, B/C again, memory card slots etc.

This move by Sony is a fantastic move to get the machine into the households of people that can't afford the top of the range machine. It's just like buying a car - you pay extra for the extras. People don't moan when a car manufacturer brings out a new car but air con, sat nav, electric windows etc. aren't in all the models as standard. They realise that if they want them they have to pay more. Same with the PS3 - if you desperately want 4 xUSB, Mem Slots and B/C then pay the extra £50.

No comparison

First of all, let's stop comparing the Xbox 360 with the PS3, the Xbox 360 is a games machine, the PS3 is an entertainment system.

PS3 owners/fans/prospective buyers choose gaming as ONE of their many entertainment options (Movies, Music, Browsing online and ACTUALLY hanging out with friends you don't need a headset to talk to) and Xbox owners/fans/prospective buyers, buy the Xbox for gaming because that's all it does (well)!

Okay, rant over! Sony's decision to make the PS3 better value is a DIRECT result of consumer feedback, whether that's direct to them or by consumers 'voting with their cash' and buying an xbox. The reality is that Sony are no 'one-trick pony' and have music publishers, movie studios and consumer electronic companies amongst others under the same umbrella . When you have a device that effectively enables consumers to consume all the other points in sony's star (Movies, Blu-ray disc, Music, Bravia TVs, surround sound systems), you need to make it as accessible to the market as possible, perhaps takin****ort term hit on profitablility to increase penetration to more households.

Sony launched with £425, got blasted for being too expensive and now they've removed superfluous functionality (backwards compatibility, memory card reader and usb), which can be easily rectified by a PS2, a USB card reader and a usb hub if necessary, putting the choice back in our, the consumer's, hands and still get blasted!

Come on guys, Sony-bashing is getting old, lock it up!

Sony are obviously panicking badly.

It seems their arrogance of the past is now affecting them where it hurts - their bank balance.

The business model is and was wrong and their misjudgements with pricing and consumer needs has backfired. We are seeing knee-jerk reactions to this now which frankly scream - we're up s*** creek without a paddle!

Nintendo's momentum and 360's awesome game line up will ensure the PS3 struggles for atleast the near future. In 3 or so years when the PS3 may pick up momentum by selling at a sub £200 mass market price, I'm sure news will be filtering through about the next xbox and even new Nintendo systems.

The amount of SKU's in all regions is confusing consumers - something Sony have said they wouldn't do, though frankly I do not believe a word they say anymore as they contradict themselves all the time, the main culprit being Phil Harrison.

Good luck Sony, I think you need it this time...
