Publisher says changes required to gain classification for Manhunt 2 are ‘unacceptable’
Rockstar has hit out at the British Board of Film Classification for treating violent films more favourably than ‘horror’ games.
In a statement sent out today, the firm said that the changes that the BBFC requested be made to Manhunt 2 before resubmission were ‘unacceptable’.
The full release reads:
"We are continuing to appeal the British Board of Film Classification's (BBFC) decision to deny the edited version of Manhunt 2 an 18+ certificate and thereby ban its release in the United Kingdom.
"The changes necessary in order to publish the game in Britain are unacceptable to us and represent a setback for video games.
"The BBFC allows adults the freedom to decide for themselves when it comes to horror in movies and we think adults should be similarly allowed to decide for themselves when it comes to horror in video games, such as Manhunt 2."
The BBFC announced this morning that it had rejected a revised version of Manhunt 2 for classification; accusing the publisher of ignoring its recommendations when the game was first banned in June.

Keep this game OUT
The first one was absolutlly disgraceful as a video game and this one seems to be even worse, I hope it never gets released in the UK.
There is usually a line you can cross with some games as far as this so-called 'horror game' goes and I believe Rockstar have gone way too far over that line.
This game is just mindless brutality in its worst form to date, sure GTA can be accepted since its more o***ame rather than a sadistic take on a horrible massacre in different ways a physco would perhaps undertake.
Re: Keep this game OUT
I believe that as an adult and sound of mind that it should be with the adult himself/herselfs decision to decide whether they are sound of mind to play the game its a personal choice.
Alot of the stuff being done in the game is stuff allready been done in movies that have been in the cinema in recent years.
So I personally cant see the differance in being subjected to watching it on a screen and being able to watch a computer game character do it?
Is it the fact u press x in stead of the play button on the dvd player?
Re: Keep this game OUT
This is long Ready?
Some double standards going on here - So they don't ban Hell Raiser movies, The Cube movies, Hostel 1,2 and 3?, Charlie Bronson Death wish films or The Devil's Reject's where on one occasion a person has their face cut off and used as a mask - but ban sequel to Manhunt game ?
Hitman 2 the game was essentially a game of assasination and so much similar in look and feel to the movie The Talented Mr Ripley even down to the talented +++ bald actor who's character once said of Garotting people on a train "Well it's not like they come with a bleeping instruction manual or anything!" (he sent them only unconscious by mistake!)
These films and games were not banned but they were funny in places ( so is the answer to give in to movie double standards and make murder funny like in James Bond and Schwarzenegger with their murder one-liners - think "Stickeroned" and "Shawcking" in Arnie and Connery voices respectively.- I think not.)
If the Manhunt 2 is callous and bleak then least it's honest.
The Devil's Rejects had a great sound track to it especially at the end when lot's more killing goes on.
So IS THIS the secret to successful classification to game and film? Add a pinch of humour to soften the bleakness and add rock and roll to make your hair stand on end not for the horror but because real good music connects at a deeper level and can do that to you.
SO THE message to RockStar is to adjust to the double standards - add some Rockfunkyclassical Jesper Kyde Hitman music like they do in Hitman 2 every time he opens fire - to make the player "feel good" about the killing and add some great Rockstar Rock and Roll tunes like when Sarah Connor answers the door to the TERMINATOR while in the backgound on her radio there's a song going "..you keep a knockin but you can't come in..." Callousness with a dose of musical irony. Or Here's a real suggestion : Rockstar please give the Manhunted main character other options than killing such as Talking options or mercy options or putting a coin in a Duke box or coke machine for soft drinks and music remember Duke Nukem 3D anyone? (but make such kindnesses suitably rewarded with death to the player so he has to repeat and go back to do it properly i.e. kill the enemy not tickle him and maybe health bonuses for the caffeine.)
Sweetener options for the censors should be turn-off-able for those players wanting the "real" raw game playing experience I mean if Parental control options were needed then the game could be released on a 16 rating couldn't it.
It makes you think doesn't it? We adults use parental controls for our kids on Sky and forget our pin numbers and end up delayed watching our Tarantino violent movies untill after nine pm and the BSE diseased Nanny state sends grown men off to war to face real risks, allows adults to drink and smoke and handle petrol to fill up cars but bans Manhunt 2.
Hitman the movie's out soon - a quintessential murder movie - bet they dont ban that.
Re: Keep this game OUT
Damn, John G. that was right on. Well said.
Re: Keep this game OUT
There is a simple solution to this, especially to those who believe the game should be banned.
Don't buy it.
The distribution of the game should rest on the competancy of those selling it in shops, rather than restrict the freewill of potential consumers.
Re: Keep this game OUT
It's plain and obvious that all violent movies and games should be banned! Sickness shouldn't be given an airing in the name of freedom. How free is a society 'really' that allows this nonsense?
Re: Keep this game OUT
This situation is really stupid, I agree with John G, The other thing rockstar could do is make a mini ballet lesson into the game at alternating parts or of course make the player characters lovers to offer some form of positive image, frankly the BBFC is off its rocker, after the game was leaked in its uncut form I took a look on youtube and other sites all over the net, there isnt anything in there that is over the top all i see is a game, when i saw Saw III i felt sick to my stomach im 20 and i find violent films like that disgusting games like manhunt are absolutley harmless because it is a pixelated image not a person films like saw look real someone ripping another person apart is not amusing nor is it worth watching granted manhunt 2 is an adult product, so for thsoe who dont want to play it dont buy it, to the conserned parents groups WATCH WHAT YOUR KIDS ARE PLAYING!!!! Little Jimmy wont become an axe murderer from playing games but it might make him a little upset and scared so try teach him the difference between reality and fantasy and stop blaming games for societies ill's, if you Support this ban then lets start banning Saw, Hostel and lets not forget Child's Play of course I mean every one Knows about Jamie Bulger getting killed because 2 boys saw that film, Remember it works on anything Unless people start taking responsibility for their actions we will end up banning everything, People need to learn to take responsibility for their own failing as parents and as people stop blaming media for problems and for gods sake GROW UP BBFC!!!!
