Screen Digest delivers its verdict on Q4 trends in publishing and platform support
The analyst’s latest report states that for the final quarter of 2007, publishers have backed the Wii with the greatest number of titles – 86 in total.
This puts the Nintendo console some distance ahead of Xbox 360 and PS3, which have 47 and 38 titles lined up respectively. A quarter of Wii releases are exclusive to the platform, compared with eight for 360 and five for PS3.
The Screen Digest report suggests that Wii is the most attractive proposition due to its rapidly growing installed base and low development costs compared with its more powerful counterparts – meaning that the number of Wii titles on the market will surpass that of Xbox 360 by early 2008, according to estimates.
While Wii and Xbox 360 are forecast to have strong end of year sales, the report is less positive when it comes to PS3. Sony’s release schedule ‘lacks the firepower to command consumer attention’ and consequently it is ‘difficult to see how the catalogue will drive hardware sales in such a competitive environment.’
Ed Barton, Screen Digest games analyst adds: “Halo 3 commanded the attention of the mass market and we expect Super Mario Galaxy for Wii to continue the process of educating the consumer as to the benefits of the current generation of home consoles.”

“Given present publishing activity levels and hardware sales rates, we expect 256 bit gaming to have moved out of transition and squarely into the mass adoption phase by year end.”
“While Wii and Xbox 360 are likely to look back on 2007 with some satisfaction, the same cannot be said for PS3. Given the platform’s release schedule this Christmas, it is not a surprise that Sony is focusing on lowering the cost of entry to PS3 platform to maintain parity with its rivals this Christmas.”

Re: And then...
You sure? Some of my launch customers got their PS3's mainly for MGS4 and GT5, they must love waiting!
Re: And then...
Hmmm. Screen Digest should do better research. I can count more than 5 PS3 exclusives in Q4 off the top of my head. 360 and Wii numbers could also be wrong then.
PS3 owners needn't wait until next year for great games to play, but 2008 does look pretty excellent for PS3.
Re: And then...
The same applies to the current state of Wii game offer. Unless you're a mini game fan you won't be much satisfied of what's on the market. Not to mention general poor quality of Wii games. It's really hard to find something worthwhile. My Wii has been getting dust for months. Good that the Metroid Prime 3 is getting its European release this month.
Re: And then...
Yeah, that's certainly true. My Wii hasn't been turned on in months. But it seems to get a free pass amongst observers because of its market success, but it's hard to argue in favour of the availability of great titles on the system relative to "even" the PS3.
Re: And then...
Of those more that 5 PS3 exclusives you mention - how many have not already been released? Cant see already released games making much impact. If there are 5 exclusives left still to release please name them. May get me thinking about getting a PS3 if they are any good.
Re: @ #8
None have been released yet, I don't think. Although the report supposedly is counting Q4, which we're already a week or so into. The ones that came to mind were..
Uncharted, Lair, Ratchet & Clank, Singstar, Folklore, The Eye of Judgement .. and then I stopped counting because I already found more than 5 ;) But you could maybe also add Wipeout HD, Haze, GT5: Prologue..I'm just plucking from memory here. I just raised it because if they can't get something as simple as that right, I'd worry about their general analysis capability!
Re: @ #8
The ps3 is a good system and the games are fun.
Most of the good games are not coming out until around christmas. I think all three consoles are good
