More details of official review to arrive today
Gordon Brown has reiterated that he is not interested in censoring the interactive entertainment industry – and promised to detail plans of his new review into video games today.
After being asked to deliver his message to the ‘makers of video games’ at a press conference at 10 Downing Street yesterday, Mr Brown said:
“Where there is pornographic or violent material any parent is going to be concerned about the impact… and any parent wants the reassurance that we are doing everything in our power.
“We have got to look at this as a society. I hope this is one of the areas where there can be common ground between all parties. I am not interested in censorship at all, but I think we do need rules governing some aspects of the internet and videos where children are involved and the whole purpose of this review would be to draw on the advice of all sources so that we can look at this in a sensible way.
“This is a challenge of modern society as a result of the explosive development of the internet, new forms of media, multimedia forms of communication.
"And of course at an earlier age than ever before children have access to all these materials and I think every parent here, but every parent in the country would be concerned that we do what we can. So we will set up this review, we will announce the details of it tomorrow and I hope that from the media itself there will be large numbers of people who will want to be involved in this exercise.”

Get proactive
There must be an opportunity for the games industry to make a move here, and head off any ridiculous knee jerk reactions.
Could the industry not get together and fund a campaign to raise awareness in parents that games can have some pretty extreme content and to take any age recommendations etc seriously. I.e. "do you know what your kids are playing?" maybe with example of content and drawing comparisons with movies etc.
As a grown up gamer I am really worried that this is going to result in something stupid happening and being condemned to playing nothing more involving and thrilling than Zelda for the rest of my life.
Come on guys work together on this one and prove as an industry that you are aware of the issues and want to do something constructive about it. Please!
Re: Get proactive
A lot of the responsibility rests with the parents and making them aware of the age ratings on titles. SInce they grew up with BBFC classification they understand what it means and when they see the PG, 15, 12A ratings and so on they can immediately relate to that and therefore choose not to buy it for their children.
Thanks largely to out dated views from many parents that "video games are for kids" they don't takle the time to appreciate what they are purchasing.
If this is such a priority for the powers that be the re-education of parents should be the priority, not censorship of the creativity. Money spent on advertising the age ratings and highlighting the dangers of giving graphic content to underage gamers strikes me as the best use of effort on this.
Having a son of my own yet working in the media I know and understand these ratings, yet many of my firends do not. Unless the awareness of parents changes we will keep having this ongoing debate, and I for one would like to see it closed. Films with much more disturbing content get released without such issues, regardless of the gore, violence or sexual nature and coming back to my original point - parents understand movies and their age ratings, hence the problem is less widespread here.
Re: Get proactive
I tend to agree with Cameron's comments - we know that we regulate ourselves well via PEGI and the BBFC. The real issue is getting parents to realise and understand their responsibilities at the point of purchase. The current spin on this story is that, again, developers and publishers are being painted as the scapegoats which is completely without justification. Perhaps, we as an industry, activelyt commit to parental education program to ensure that they (the parents) are made fully aware of the ratings scheme in place and what it really means.
seems good...
So far I like the tone, there doesn't seem to be too much of a bias against the video games industry in the way he is speaking.
he knows from running the budget how much money the booming UK games industry pumps into the country economy, so I don't think he wants to do anything to kill of the industry too badly.
I just hope that the point of view of adult gamers gets across too without getting railroaded with "think of the children" rhetoric.
Re: seems good...
Indeed, that was pretty much my point.
If the industry can get there and start that education process ASAP before any such reviews get under way then hopefully the point will be understood that games aren't just for kids anymore and that there is a market out there just as diverse as for film and other media.
Re: seems good...
I propose we take the BBFC to court for defamation of our characters by implying we are not fit enough to make our own decisions
Why trust him?
Just when as he ever said the truth?
Lower taxes?
A robust economy...wait for the housing crash...
Education...if you are scottish like him all fees and grants are still paid, if you are english you walk out of uni with 12-15k debt....
Despair with this man as PM as he will smile at you whilst he does whatever will win him votes....and if the public happen to have a turn against our industry then watch out he will decimate it and still smile at you.
