40GB model and new 60GB bundles arrive on the High Street
After the numerous price reductions and new SKUs that Sony has introduced in its PS3 hardware range across all its global territories, today marks the arrival of the new-look PS3 offer at UK retail.
Gamers looking to snap up Sony’s console can from today can choose between the 40GB model at £299.99 and the reduced price 60GB model at £349.99 – down from its previous price of £424.99.
For those who need reminding, the new 40GB model is slightly different to the previous machine Sony had on the market – as well as the reduced storage space, it also lacks the integrated memory card reader, two USB ports and its PS2 backwards compatibility.
The 60GB model remains fully-featured, and depending on which retailer gamers visit will come bundled with two games from a large selection of titles including Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Formula One: Championship Edition and Resistance: Fall of Man.

Get the 60gb
I say get in there and pick up the 60gb's, once you work out the difference in price from the 40gb for £50 more you get 2 games, fully loaded PS3 with BC as well.
Re: Get the 60gb
The 40Gb model still has PS1 backward compatibility - it's only PS2 that has been removed.
Re: Get the 60gb
Slight correction, but the 40GB does have support for PSone backwards compatibility.
The 60GB pack is definitely better values if the games are appealing to you, but it seems many consumers value price over value.
Not bad
the hmv site offers the 60GB version with Resistance (best selling ps3 game) and heavenly sword plus a choice of either Casino Royal or Spiderman 3 for £350
Not bad; considering the Elite is £300 with no games (but comes with a headset and another 60gb)
Re: Not bad
Come on MCV!! Correct the story!! PS1 is still compatable!
PS1 games BC??
I have checked the net and cannot see anything to even suggest PS1 games are BC on the PS3.
Also comparing the Xbox 360 Elite to the PS3 is pointless, both systems offer a different choice in games and services completely where the Xbox 360 clearly has the larger library of games to offer.
I think what will ha***** as more consumers choose to purchase HDTV's the PS3 could be an easy way in for a HD movie player I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.
Re: PS1 games BC??
If you're worried about the 40gb not having PS1 game compatibility - then don't because it can download and play all of the PS1 'classics' from the PlayStation Network...
As a 60gb PS3 owner I was initially pleased to be able to play PS2 games on it - but now I never do because the PS3 verions are so much better, it's kind of like having a Ferrari and never driving in more than 1st gear - sure you can do it but it isn't as much fun as burning some rubber at full speed!
The new price for the 60gb does look very tempting though!!
Re: PS1 games BC??
So I was right then, the 40gb cannot play PS1 games you have to download or should I say 'BUY THEM AGAIN' on the PSN...However looking at the PSN of late its like the Sahara Desert...Not much on there.
Re: PS1 games BC??
The 40gb does play ps1 games, its just the ps2 compat thats been removed... for licensing reasons apparently, its another money saver. Now all someone needs to do is find the ps2 emulator software thats on the 60gb model and share it around lol, you know it will happen.
@RYU
The ps3 40gig is 100% compatible with ps1 games

It is definately ps1 compatible. But who actually cares^^.
I want to play Next-Gen Games :)
Re: PS1 games BC??
Ah ok thanks for clearing it up.
So has anyone got excited and gone and bought a PS3 today? Hopefully no one has bought the 40gb lol as once you have selected a game or 2 its more than the price of the 60gb anyways.
Shame Sony could not have included the rumble pad would have been nice.
I will probably import one from Japan via yesasia.com I want the white pad but I know it wont go with my black PS3 soz what to do!
Re: PS1 games BC??
Hey Guys, just to back up Ben here, when Sony released the PS3 60GB they stated in the official press release of features the following;
"Full Backward Compatibility: Play thousands of PSOne® and Playstation®2 software titles as well as your DVD and CD Collection on PLAYSTATION®3"
However from Sony we obtained the following confirmation on our Model Spec sheet, regarding the PS3 40GB & Playstation®2 software titles;
PS2 Backward compatibility - No
So this is what we are advising our customers here: http://www.body1.co.uk/BrowseProducts.aspx?CategoryID=268" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://www.body1.c...D=268
There is no mention of the 40GB being incompatible with PSOne titles.
Also just to finish off, we believe the failing of the PS3 so far has been down to the lack of software. If the titles were there from day one then people would not be sitting around waiting for what's due next year. We have no complaint about the hardware what so ever. We have owned one since launch and only have two titles in our collections that we deem worthy of purchase. Almost a year on still waiting.....
