New FPS rumoured, whilst Piñata dev questions Microsoft’s marketing commitment
CVG reports that rumours have surfaced claiming that Microsoft owned UK developer Rare is hard at work on Perfect Dark 2 – the sequel to the original N64 title and the second instalment of the series to hit Xbox 360.
Sources claim the game will feature a “darker, grittier Joanna Dark” and that the moral decisions of gamers will affect the storyline and conclusion. Fingers point towards a release next year.
Meanwhile, Gamesindustry reports that Rare software engineer James Thomas felt that Rare’s 2006 release didn’t receive the marketing support it deserved as Microsoft was so focused on Epic title Gears of War.
“I think from our point of view, it was interesting to see how the marketing budget was split last Christmas, because obviously everyone knew that Microsoft were publishing Gears of War and Viva Piñata,” he stated.
“Yet, so much of the money went towards publishing Gears of War, which is going to sell millions anyway. It was a bit like, 'what about the other franchise?' I think we got left in the wake somewhat. Hopefully the PC version this Christmas, it might get something of a second wind.”

What ever happened to the once great RARE!
What James Thomas needs to do is stop bla*****veryone else for a **** 2006 focus and get back to basic's and do what RARE use to do best!
MAKING GREAT GAMES!
Since Microsoft took over the quality of there games have been mediocre to say the least!
I remember when the RARE name stood for pure quality, I am afraid this no longer seems to be the case, I miss there ingenuity and ability to come up with totally original concepts and Ideas (Viva aside) but like most developers today they have fallen into what I call “MILKING THE FRANCHISE” trap!
Lets be honest Perfect Dark Zero was a big disappointment and if only they could produce something as tasty as Gears of War then maybe they would get the support they so desperately need!

Re: What ever happened to the once great RARE!
You have to remember that as time goes by people move on.
I know a few ex-rare employees, only testers mind, but they knew enough about the way have been for the last few years to explain how rare has taken a tumble.
One critical factor was that fter PD on the N64 quite a few people left as they were getting tired the way the stampers wer running things.
Some of the biggers influencers of GE and PD left, a few went an formed free radical a couple to nintendo and few others here and there.
At that point you knew the next PD probably wasnt going to be all that considering that the lead designer used to be the "tea boy" back when GE was made.
I think the stampers were laughing all the way to the bank myself as they took less and less involvment in their business and knew it wasnt going all that well so when MS wanted to buy them they probably leapt at the chance.
Its a different team that are working on this PD compared to PDZ so hopefully they can inject something new into it as it is a good franchise.
