Stringer: PlayStation network to “spread beyond consoles”

Sony’s chief executive says video is key to building successful software infrastructure

With the likes of PS3 Home and video-on-demand already in the works for Sony’s PlayStation Network, chief executive Howard Stringer says that PlayStation consoles are just the start of Sony’s vision for its platform.

“We are building a software infrastructure to distribute video and music, more particularly video, through the PlayStation Network,” Stringer stated to The Financial Times. “That is a Japanese and American combined effort to build a platform around a common software architecture to distribute video via the PlayStation network and beyond.”

“We are trying to get our devices to talk to each other efficiently. PlayStation Network should migrate from gadget to gadget. But initially it starts with PlayStation devices and then to TV and beyond. That’s the goal.

“We won't know how effective the effort has been until early next year.”

Sony has previously stated that PS3 to PSP connectivity, and subsequently PSP to PC connectivity, is a vital part of its future plans.
