Rumours suggest Rockstar’s upcoming next-gen opus to significantly ramp-up multiplayer offering
There’s been a lot of speculation regarding the possible reasons for Rockstar’s decision to postpone the release of Grand Theft Auto IV from this month to some time early next year, but recent reports point to a possible focus on increased online functionality as the main cause.
GameSpot spotted a report on Canadian website GamingExcellence which quotes a Rockstar ‘representative’ at the recent PlayStation Holiday Preview Event in Toronto as stating:
“The developers were considering the possibility of having an open world completely unlocked from the start of the game. Rockstar is aiming for at least 16 simultaneous players, with more than just usual deathmatch modes.”
Grand Theft Auto has strayed online before, most notably in the Stories iterations of the franchise on PSP. And whilst nothing has been confirmed as of yet, the developer has previously stated its intention to take the series in a brand new direction.

will it actually work?
the previous versions of GTA (the early top down games, and the recent PSP versions) along with the mods for the PC version, have always had trouble with multiplayer.
Often you would get situations of
Player1) "I killed you"....
player2) "no you didn't I am in a tank on west side"
Player1) "no you are here on east side, and i just shot you?"
player2) "no, i am here in a tank, wtf??"
this has happened on every version i have tried of GTA, Offical multiplayer or modded.
I am fairly certain this wont happen with GTA IV, what with the extra care rockstar seem to be taking, but you never know............

I don't know. The PC multiplay mods were additions to games that weren't built with Multiplay in mind. The PSP games kinda look like scaled down versions of their bigger brothers...not to mention the overall bugginess of PSP MP in general. I dunno, maybe I am a GTA fanboy, but I like to think that if the game is built from the ground up with MP in mind this time, it'll work better than previous attempts at GTA-MP.
