Now the US gets new 40GB PS3

SCEA introduces 40GB model and cuts price of existing bundle

Next-gen.biz reports that a new $400 40GB PS3 will launch in the US on November 2nd, while the existing 80GB PS3 is slashed from $600 down to $500.

SCEA boss jack Tretton confirmed that, just like in Europe and Japan, the new entry level model will not feature backwards compatibility.

“We're choosing to focus on the PlayStation 2 consumer with the PlayStation 2, which remains incredibly relevant, and focus on the PlayStation 3 consumer with the new 40GB model and the great software coming out,” Tretton said.

"Backward compatibility is a nice secondary consideration, but it's far from the number-one priority. I think the educational curve is starting to be broached with the general consumer," he added.

First, it was 20GB and 60GB with full backwards compatibility (BC).

Europe got the latter model with half-software BC and the highest price in the world.

Then it was 80GB with half software BC.

Europe still being shafted with highest price in the world.

Then Europe got a 40GB with no BC at all. Wow, thanks, Sony!

Now, 40GB goes worldwide, so what's the bet that the 80GB model will make it here to Europe as well?

You'd be a dumb idiot not to see through Fony's marketing plans.

It's shameful the way they've treated UK/Europe and alienated many of their loyal fans worldwide.

I'm surprised anyone can make heads or tails of this SKU shambles they've got out there...It's pathetic!

I personally think it's Sony's Way of killing off the PS2 as it's been their biggest nightmare at trying to make the PS3 as successful as many gamers wont part away from the PS2 until the PS3 has many more games and whilst the PS2 is still selling games Publishers arnt going to stop making the games for it do getting rid of the backwards compatibility means PS3 owners arnt going to buy PS2 games anymore as lets be honest it isnt going to cost Sony anything to have put the Backward compatibility on the new PS3's as they have already developed the software to do it.

How does the software BC work? Is it akin to the 360, with each game requiring an individual downloaded update? Perhaps Sony were worried that (potentially) someone could own so many PS2 titles, and therefore require so many downloads that it would exceed the capacity of the smaller hard drive?

Well, in any case, I think this is only the beginning. If Sony intend the PS3 will be around for the next ten years then I imagine we've only seen the beginning, and certainly not the end of the 'SKU shambles'
