RF Online drops subscription charges

Codemasters makes its second PC MMO free-to-play in Europe and North America

Following the same pattern that it adopted with fellow PC MMO ArchLord, UK publisher Codemasters has dropped subscription charges from sci-fi online title RF Online, Next-Gen reports.

“Moving RF Online to free-to-play game marks yet another milestone for Codemasters Online and the wider industry,” Codemasters Online marketing director Ed Relf stated.

“We have proven with ArchLord that has been downloaded over one million times the potential success that can be experienced and we are pleased to be in a position to re-launch RF Online using a similar model.”

The free-to-play online model, which favours microtransactions to monthly subscription charges, is very prevalent in the East, and is becoming more popular with Western MMO publishers.
