HD-DVD Xbox 360 already in the works?

Aussie tech site claims that Microsoft and Toshiba are currently working together on a revised next-gen console

A report on Australian technology site Smarthouse claims that Microsoft and Toshiba are working on a brand new Xbox 360 that incorporates an HD-DVD drive, larger hard drive and a revised version of its Media Centre software.

It is said to be in development as a response to Sony’s Blu-Ray drive, supposedly because Blu-Ray is named as a key factor in many gamer’s decision to purchase a PS3. In addition, the site claims that both Toshiba and Microsoft are unhappy with sales of the currently available 360 HD-DVD add-on.

The new model is said to be positioned as a multimedia hub, and will no doubt be designed to run hand-in-hand with Microsoft’s growing movie and TV content service, which itself has not yet launched in Europe.

HD DVD's slow death? BluRay fanboyz can be clueless. Sony is sweating in their pants with yet another price cut. If they were losing money before at the initial price of the PS3, they must be losing a bucket load with this recent price-cut. On the Sony side of the world, here's a list of scenerios they have posted up in their meeting room:

A) Release PS3 - BluRay will dominate from beginning.

B) If A) doesn't pan out, bring heavy marketing to sway buyers to go PS3/BluRay

C) If A) and B) don't fully pan out, slash prices of PS3

D) If A), B) and C) don't fully pan out, slash prices again.

E) If all of above don't fully pan out, then find excuses to give Fox and Disney after they've decided to support HD DVD.

This will not happen. What would be the use, an internal movie player. The HD-DVD built-in drive would never play games. Microsoft has repeatedly prohibited developers from requiring a hard-drive because of the backlash from Core users. Now what are the chances of allowing developers to make a game that would require an HD-DVD drive to play a game, thus alienating their customer-base which has already had to endure a reliability rate of 15% to 30% failure rate.

Not going to happen, and if it does, you have a sleek HD-DVD player and standard 360 rolled into one. It won't provide better games, which has always been the sole focus of 360 users.

Remember even if this happens, games won't be released on HD-DVD, because then anyone who had an "older" 360 would not be able to use it.

It would just be for movies, only. Still, not a bad deal for someone that doesn't have either a 360 or HD-DVD player yet, as long as the price isn't significantly higher.

Im sorry but to rvt yeah sony is losing money on their systems but microsoft is losing a boat load also. From all the repairs and replacement systems they are sending out from the ring of death debacle they are estimated to be loosing out on hundreds of millions, and considering the fact that they still havent yet turned a profit on their first xbox, i doubt they will be turning a profit on the 360. their main focus will be on software. and to say that 360 will take advanage of the hd dvd is moot. they will not put games on the hd dvd format because they will render the millions of 360's they have sold obsolete.

No your wrong Blu Ray Gamers DO need, its not just for films developers c****e the massive storage capabilites and High Definition to create much better audio and Textures in games and generally more content, look what happened to Project Gotham Racing 4 and Halo 3 had to be cut down and quality reduce to fit on a DVD disc, fool!
