Takahashi: “Sony pleaded with developers”

Microsoft insider claims Sony has been working hard to ensure PS3 development remains strong

Mercury News reporter and noted Microsoft insider Dean Takahashi has claimed that Sony has been in discussion with third parties to ensure that support remains strong for its PS3, but that in his opinion the company’s software offering will not ensure a strong Christmas.

In the wake of the recent NPD sales figures, Takahashi noted: “One piece of news that came out this week was that Sony pleaded with third-party developers not to abandon its struggling platform. That change in attitude is a marked difference.

“The argument is that the PS3 will show its strength as developers learn how to make games for it. But developers know they can staff four or five Wii teams with the same number of people it takes to make one PS3 game.

“We may have a glut of Wii games soon, but that’s not as bad as not having enough games on the PS3.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming Christmas retail battle, Takahashi claims that Sony is likely to remain in third place behind rivals Microsoft and Nintendo.

“Sony managed to crack the top ten finally with a PS3 title, Heavenly Sword. But beyond Ratchet & Clank, it’s unclear what is going to be a big seller for the company this season.”

Sony drop the ball

It has to be said, its looking like this Christmas could quite possibly be the worst for Sony and its Playstation brand. Their competitors are way ahead of them in not just sales but in terms of quality output and the mass market, (once Sony's bread and butter), are becoming less and less intrested in PS3 with each passing month. Whilst their has been a surge in 60gb PS3 sales since the price cut its been short lived because at the end of the day its all down to the games, something that Sony's 'super-console' is seriously lacking-unless of course you count Xbox 360 hand-me-downs with a £49.99 price tag and a handful of medicocre exclusives compared to its nearest rivals output.

Sony should of just stuck to making a games consoles, this 'army swiss knife 'styled machine has become its own worst enemy as in no one knows exactly whats its supposed to be. Games console? PC? Blu-ray player? Multi-media hub?

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Sony have definitely dropped the ball with the PS3 and can look foward to losing yet another Christmas.

The PS3 has sold just as well as the 360 had at the same point

This whole story is complete nonsense. The PS3 has sold as many units at this point after launch as the 360 had after the same period of time.

HERE IS THE PROOF:

Also remember that not only did the PS3 launch just 7 months ago in the EU which means the 360 had longer on sale worldwide but the 360 had no next gen competition. The PS3 is actually outperforming the 360 in sales in real terms because its sold just as well but with a high price and no big games released yet. If you think its selling badly you are an idiot. If its already selling as well as the 360 did Just think about how well its going to sell when there is actually a reason to buy one.

Just proves statistics can be made to prove or disprove anything.
The 360 was sold out most of the release period. PS3 has never been sold out and never will. Sony have finally got their message over. Its definitely THE THIRD PLACE for Sony. Please don't call people idiots because their opinion is different from yours, whatever console you like or dislike is your own personal opinion.
one last thing -why are Sony pleading with developers not to abandon its struggling platform, - are they idiots now then?

Nice bit of damage control from the fanboys, again.

No, the PS3 is not selling well compared to its nearest rivals. Yes its had a much needed increase since the price drop, but if you want to split hairs then be my guest it doesn't change the fact that the Playstation 3 is floundering in third place in the hardware war. The fact that its currently getting an almighty whooping by the Nintendo Wii, which itself has just be surpassed by the 360 in North America, should tell you all you need to know.

By the way, no one said here it was an incapable machine, its just not as dominant as its predecessors in both terms of hardware sales and ownership of software, so please grow up and refrain from the name calling.

All of the new consoles are failures really, PS3 has lacking software support and confusing features/configurations for consumers (also shared with 360) and was expensive.
The Wii, while cheap and selling well, has arguably the worst game lineup and is going to get dated very quickly with no high-def support.
The 360, has by far the best software but shares the PS3's 'range' in console variations, and suffers from terrible hardware problems that have led to almost over a 33% defect rate.

The PS3 and the Wii need a serious software boost, both have good games coming (more PS3 then Wii tbh) but both formats need to pull their fingers out or they will be squashed by the 360 by the end of 08 early 09.

And I know the Wii sells well, but it will hit a brick wall when casual gamers lose patience and stop buying it.

The only winner this 'console war' is IBM and like with the HD format war the real losers are us, the consumer.

The truth is that XBox 360 is dead in Japan, it is dead in Continental Europe, will struggle in the UK at Xmas but is doing well in the US. Wii is doing well everywhere. The winner: The Industry, the most vibrant ever and getting stronger. It's all about growth not the battle of the consoles

Why buy a PS3?

Currently there is no reason whatsoever for anyone to buy a PS3 in preference to a Wii or a 360. Fact. The Sony fanboys are the only customers.
This is something Sony must address, but their ability to address it is diminishing as developers desert the platform.
It is ridiculously difficult to develop for.
I hope they pull it round but their competetive position looks worse with each passing week.
