Is the end in sight for PS2?

Analyst says US September sales show that the end is nearing for record-breaking Sony console

Jeetil Patel, analyst for Deutsche Bank, has claimed that the most successful console the world has ever seen, the PS2, could be finally approaching the end of its days following the publication of NPD’s September sales figures for the US.

GameDaily quotes Patel as saying: “PlayStation 2 software sales fell 47 per cent year-on-year to $85 million, representing a deceleration from the 33 per cent year-on-year decline last month.

“While this substantial decline was inevitable, it is currently unclear whether the drop reflects consumer transition to next-gen software or weak spending patterns amongst the low-end consumer. Needless to say, with tougher comps ahead for PS2 software sales, we think that the PS2 may finally be on its way out of the industry for good.”

No ****, Sherlock!

Do they really PAY these people at DBank to state the obvious?!

Of course it will decline in sales, because of the newgen consoles, but in NO WAY is the PS2 dead!

It's still got at least 2 or possibly 3 years left in it. The second hand market will continue to keep it available and who knows, Sony might repackage it one more time, perhaps into their TV sets or something like that.

No matter what though, this console is still a market beater and market leader, with over 110m units sold, worldwide. Nintendo, Microsoft and indeed even Sony with the PS3 can only dream of such figures!

The real question is how much PS2 software is available? The console has seen a definite slump in titles since the next-genners arrived. A lot of the titles it did get it shared with those platforms. I'd wager that if more PS2-exclusive titles were made, the console will show its worth. For example, I'm pretty sure Tomb Raider: Anniversary did very well and that only saw two platform releases.

This is a US centric view and takes no account of the massive markets in the developing world where Sony can make good profits with the PS2 for another 3+ years.
A 2 model home platform business model with overlapping generations introduced every 5 years and having a 10 year sales life makes a lot of sense on so many levels. Why dump a product halfway through it's life when all it's costs are amortised?
Perhaps Microsoft and Nintendo will adopt this model.
