Hi-def platform holder dismisses earlier claim of revised Xbox 360 model
In response claims last week that Toshiba is currently working with Microsoft on a revised Xbox 360 console that integrates an HD-DVD drive, a spokesperson for the company has told gadget site Stuff that it knows nothing about it.
"It's got nothing to do with us," the Toshiba spokesperson stated. "But we know Microsoft doesn't want to include the HD-DVD so as not to limit the user's experience." Which is what Microsoft has said all along.
Whilst there is an obvious attraction in having HD-DVD integrated into Xbox 360 hardware, the main concern the idea raised was the possible implications it would have for existing non-HD-DVD 360 owners i.e. compatibility with new software.

What implications?
I am of the belief that there is a market for the inclusion of a HD DVD drive tot he xbox360. I cannot see how it would limit the user experience when it is actually adding an experience to the system spec, to play back HD DVDs? After all, the HD DVD drive is backward compatible to the DVD standard; so where is the limitation?
It would be nice if Microsoft did an upgrade program for existing owners, if possible on the xbox360 hardware spec, to have their unit upgraded with a HD DVD rather than having the stand-alone drive as it is now.
Re: What implications?
Toshiba is desperate to have it included in the unit in order to stem the Blu-Ray tidal wave.
As is Microsoft against the PS3.
So it makes perfect sense.
Too bad it's a limited technology. HD-DVD is too limited to be the long term solution for HD content.
Microsoft should dump HD-DVD for the benefit of everyone.
Synergy
Toshiba and Microsoft both have the same commercial opponent. They are also in the position to do each other a massive favour.
There is no smoke without fire so there is probably something lined up, even if it isn't exactly what the article predicts.
