65nm Cell CPU makes its way into new hardware, making machine cooler and quieter

Technology blog Engadget reports that as well as the more publicised differences between existing PS3 hardware and the newly released 40GB version, such as the removal of the card reader and backwards compatibility, the machines also boast a revised Cell CPU.

The new 65nm version of Sony’s much-touted processor consumes less power than the existing 90nm versions, seeing usage drop from 200 Watts to 135 Watts.

As a result the machine makes less noise than existing models and runs at a lower temperature – though neither of these issues have dogged the PS3 in the same way as some of its competitors.

Other on-board changes have also been noted, including a smaller heat pipe, a new version of the motherboard and a battery to keep the clock up to date in the event that the console is disconnected from the mains.

“No CMOS?!”

Hang on! Let me get this straight.

So the current models (prior to the crippled 40GB) DON'T have a CMOS battery?! ("...a battery to keep the clock up to date...").

I find that bizarre! Surely not?

thats not only improbable, it's impossible

the german magazine c't (heise) asumed 65nm because of the reduced power consumption of the 40GB modell. But Sony denied this: the 40GB has still 90nm RSX and Cell

Wow, the power consumption of a PS3 with 90nm CPU and GPU is just ~130 watts. When the CPU (Cell) shrinks to 65nm and the GPU (RSX) also shrinks to 65nm, the power consumption will decrease dramatically. On top of that, 65nm component are about 40 to 50 percent cheaper to produce. And this is before the CPU goes to 45nm at the end of 2008/early 2009.
