SCEA prepares 40GB advertising blitz

Sony’s American arm plans aggressive media push ahead of upcoming launch of new PS3 hardware

This weekend will see the launch of one of Sony Computer Entertainment America’s largest ever advertising campaigns as it looks to promote the upcoming revised 40GB PS3 model in the territory, Gamesindustry reports.

The company’s growing PlayStation Network is to take a front role in the media push, as well as the hi-def Blu-Ray drive and, obviously, the reduced price tag.

"The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear," SCEA’s VP of marketing Peter Dille stated.

"Beyond the brilliant hi-def games that the PS3 delivers, you'll also see a big focus behind the PS3's Blu-Ray movie capability and, for the first time, you'll see a major focus behind the PlayStation Network and the exclusive gaming content available on the PlayStation Store, as well as break through services like Home.”

As well as touting its first party line-up of titles that includes Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Sony will also be pushing upcoming third party titles such as Ubisoft pair Haze and Assassin’s Creed, as well as EA’s Burnout Paradise and Konami’s recently delayed Metal Gear Solid 4.

"Behind the brilliant games"-"As well as breakthrough services like home"......Where are they then? Sony want to become the market leader in the games industry they've gotta do more than drop the price and advertise....don't get me wrong, its a good move but not good enough. Improve the online gaming service, release GOOD games, release exclusive games and release HOME would be a better move! I've had my PS3 for 7 months now and still got to say I rarely play on it....thank god for my 360!

Point taken on Home, but my PS3 has been pretty busy lately with Ratchet, EoJ, and Everyday Shooter and PES - and they have stuff like Uncharted, CoD4, Assassin's Creed, Singstar, Rock Band, Wipeout HD etc. all coming soon. It's a good lineup.

In my opinion, the PS3's performance between now and Q1 09 will make or break he system.

Yes, Sony have a lot of games (some good ones too) due between now and then, and they are finally starting to advertise the console properly, but if The PS3 fails to gain a bigger foothold worldwide then Sony may have to consider pulling the plug.. which is a great shame as I prefer the PS3 to the other new systems.
