Eidos clinches EastEnders rights

Popular TV soap opera to be given the video game treatment courtesy of Britsoft publisher?

MCV understands that UK publisher Eidos has secured the video game rights to leading BBC soap opera Eastenders.

The title is reportedly being handled by Eidos’ casual games division, which typically works on both DS and mobile phone titles.

Though no details are yet known about the forthcoming title, the odds are that the publisher would favour a Sims-style simulation game based around the antics of the Albert Square population.

A spokesperson for Eidos told MCV: “We do not comment on rumour and speculation.”

I've been saying for years how the subject matter of EastEnders lends itself so perfectly to videogames.

I foresee a range of mini games for the Wii based loosely on bad things that happen in London, and cafes.

Or perhaps a really, really depressing take on The Sims?

If this is a success I dread to think what will else will be considered suitable for adapting to the world of 'casual gaming'…

The Antiques Roadshow, Richard & Judy, Points Of View… I'm sure they could scrape enough 'casual' ideas out of any of those to make a 'casual game'.
