David Reeves dismisses internet mumblings of a 40 per cent failure rate
Following the appearance of a report on Dutch games site Gamed.nl which claimed that Sony is experiencing a 40 per cent failure rate of its recently launched 40GB PS3, Sony has insisted that the figures are completely inaccurate.
The story, which has since been removed and replaced with this apology, stated that information from a Belgian retail chain claimed that users were experiencing problems with the Blu-Ray disc drive that rendered discs unreadable.
Sony’s European boss David Reeves said in a statement: "We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PS3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story.
"Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3."

No failures
My retail operations were not faced with any failures of the 40 GB model thus far. We have a 1% failure rate, with sound issues clearly dominating (some games don't have any sound).
Failures
I bet Sony are trying to cover there tracks. Watch out everyone Sony are very sneaky people
Re: Failures
We have a 0% return rate for them, but thats probably because we haven't managed to sell 1 yet!
Re: Failures
I am a manager at ebgames and we have had no 40GB returns out of the 50+ i have sold. Suprisingly the Wii has been seeing its fair share of the returns lately, Mainly due to Wiimote damage.
Re: Failures
No returns on any 40gb consoles or even the 60gb. We too have had a couple of Wiimote problems and don't talk to me about the number of 360 problems....
Re: Failures
360 is ****, the WORST console I have ever sold in my store
Re: Failures
We've had our share of Wiimote problems as well. They were usually resolved by removing the batteries for five minutes and resetting the Bluetooth settings of the console (press the red button behind the lid for 20 or so seconds). The XBOX 360 is in its own league in terms of failures. I've never seen a mass market product with such a high failure rate.
Equally worrying is the fact that Microsoft does not allow retailers here to deal with the problem for the customer. I am proud to offer services to my customers, such as giving them a temporary console (Sony, Nintendo) when theirs is broken. Because I am not in control of the broken console with Microsoft, it would be insane to do the same with the 360s.
Re: Failures
As of yet we have decided not to stock any 40gb units in our store as the advantages of the 60gb machine outweigh this more simplified machine. However, I will definately vouch for the Playstation 3's excellent reliability and I believe this is simply further proof of Sony's dedication to their fans.
I also strongly agree with claims on the 360's, shall we say, below average reliability rate. I always strongly discourage seasoned gamers from purchasing this console, simply because ... it's a peice of ****
Re: Failures
Wow all you fanboy's are store managers now, who'd of guessed that?
Oh well i guess you have to believe everything you read on the internet don't you?
Re: Failures
No Colin, we're not fanboys as you like to say. We're interested in making money and you don't make money from a product which keeps breaking down on the consumer and has to be returned every other week. Because when something breaks, the consumer's instant reaction is to blame the place they bought it for supplying shoddy goods. We then have to spend our time (which equates to money) reassuring the consumer that there is a known problem with their console (which they then turn on you as saying why weren't they informed when they bought it...) and more time (i.e. money) getting the thing sent back for repair. And that's time that could be spent serving other customers. So from a financial point of view I'm more interested in shipping a product that isn't going to give me after sales grief. I wish all the consoles have as good failure rate as the PS3 as we would have a lot more happy customers.
Re: Failures
To the nameless author of the above comment,
I find it interesting that you seem to be able to vouch for all the people that have commented on this thread, do you know them all personally? you see i too work in retail and although 360 returns were much higher than expected initially, the numbers have dropped over recent months besides which most of my customers are aware that the 360 had hardware problems and had extended ththe warranty, also why would i want to
Re: Failures
- deter customers from purchasing our number 2 selling console ( Wii being our No1 console ) which sells far more software than PS3 and Wii combined, when i can simply remind them of the issues microsoft had and of the extended warranty conditions.
I had a similar situation when the PS2 lanched with disc drive problems, i didn't advise all my customers not to buy it and neither did anyone else.
Re: Failures
Yeah im a manager too....
Ignorance
Reading this it is pretty obvious that nobody told the Belgians that the new model wasn't backwards compatible.
PS3 40GB model not so innocet
I purchased one one of the saide 40GB models this weekend and its the folowing tues ive already had to send my console back as of a failed drive and now its doing the very same thing AGAIN...so in my opinion i tend to agree with the "incorrect" journalists article.
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Ive also had to exchange by 40Gb PS3 due to cd drive failure! Not happy! Also, a google search of this problem returns a substantial amount of search results!
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
My cousin has one of the original PS3's and his just quit reading disc's. It won't read Anything. He called Sony and they told him they couldn't do anything because he was out of his one year warranty. At least microsoft fixes my 360 for free, they even pay for shipping.
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
I purchased a 40 gb ps3 on 11-08-07...i know the exact date because i just copied my receipt getting ready to box up my new ps3 and send it back to sony due to it not reading blu rays or games.....still reads dvds but....no blu rays.....they said it's a known issue....i knew nothing about it until it happened to mine and i called....i knew after the fact.....but they said total turnaround time would be 14-20 days....i am so upset :-(
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Bought my 40gb ps3 in manchester today, lasted about an hour.
Interface fine, disk drive just does nothing so can't play games or cd's.
After fighting my way through the boxing day crowds this is just perfect.
Repeat performance tommorrow,
wish I'd got a 360 with halo instead now.
Sony, acknowledge that you need to improve your product testing before asking me to part with my ca****ain.

Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Well just to add playing Heavenly sword for 2 hours the 40 gig PS3 purchased and played for only 2 hours straight off the shelf brand new died. DVD drive no longer function and read anything. Tried Previous game Def Jam Icon that worked and the blue ray Spiderman movie which worked. Now none do.
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Well mine won't read any disks any more either :(. - tried games, blu-rays, CD's - nothing. Everything else seems to work fine and the blue 'disk' LED at the front lights up. Although I'm not a manager like most of you people seem to be I'm an employee and I haven't noticed many returns and didn't know about the problem until now.

Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Hi, Mine has just died last night, no more CD/DVD/BRD are read.
As far as i can see, the problem doesn't seem isolated, I've found here in France over 100 pages of complains on just 3 forums...Wait and see...

Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Add me to the list. My PS3 60 GB model of @ 8 months just died tonight. It will not read BluRay movies, BluRay games, or regular DVD's. It's 1 am here and I plan on hitting it with some canned air in the am, and then calling Sony if it doesnt fix the issue. When inserting a disk, the disk read icon circles and just never stops. I did a google search to see if it was a common problem, and came up with quite a few hits of the exact same problem, seems pretty widespread to me.
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
I think this may be a cover up from Sony - I know 4 friends that have PS3's and 2 of the four have stopped playing discs in less than 2 months! so 40% sounds about right. I am waiting for mine to fail!
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
I bought a 60gig in november. Not played it that often. then one day while playing virtua tennis, it froze. never recognized a disc after that an the blue light stayed on. phoned sony, they sent me a new one out free of charge within five days so cant complain too much. heres Hoping.
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
My manager had to send his 40GB PS3 back after only 17 days of use. It stopped reading discs. He spoke to the courier about PS3 returns, and the courier replied by saying that he was on PS3 returns FULL-TIME. At least 10 to 15 deliveries A DAY. For Sony to deny that there are no reliablility issues is exactly what you'd expect from them. The least they could do is increase the warranty... I'm holding off until they stop ripping us off.
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
My son got his 60GB PS3 for Xmas (I bought it on 3rd November 07). It lasted 3 weeks before the read disc issue. I contacted Sony (do not use the 0870 number - they take an age to answer it). Sony policy is to replace machines more than 28 days old with returbished ones. However, they have accepted that machines purchased after 1st November 07 were probably intended for Xmas pressies and are replacing with brand new ones. I received my 'NEW' one today, but it has been excessively used by the state of the casing and rubber feet. They are now sending another 'NEW' one on Monday. From the number of threads I have picked up, this is a lot more serious than Sony are letting on - the delivery driver today had a fair few of 'replacements' in his van!!!
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Purchase PS3 2 weeks before Christmas. Stopped reading all discs - games, DVD and blu-ray. Took console back and got a full refund as still in its 28 day warranty. Purchased another console from a different store and it has lasted 2 weeks after developing the same problem.
What to do now? Still have software but absolutely no confidence in the hardware so reluctant to get a new one.
(not great at statistics but I believe the probability of purchasing 2 systems and both of them developing faults - same fault at that! - is about 1 in 10000 based on Sonys self claiming failure rate of less that 1%.
I do not believe it!
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Well mine failed after 40 days, got a replacement in 6 days, and the new one failed today after only 16 days of use ... there is a problem here !!

Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Yes, I'm in Denmark and have just contacted the store where I bought my 40Gb model on the 1. feb - it too stopped reading any disks all of a sudden.
I'm really not happy with hearing that if it's more than 28 days old, I'll be getting a refurb :(
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Can't complain here. Since August I have bought x5 Ps3 60gb and x2 40gb PS3's has gifts for nephews and nieces. I have a 60gb which I've upgraded to a 160gb (for all my DivX films),. I have had no problems what so ever with any of the machines I have bought and some do get used like there's no tomorow.
However I did see a bargain and bought a faulty 60gb through the newspaper ad (games kept freezing) and phone Sony, they took my machine details on Tuesday and advised I will br getting a refurbed one on Friday,.. pretty good service I must say.
Always make sure your consoles are well ventilated and not stuck under a desk or littered with other crap on your desk. Always make sure your discs are clean, ensure you have the latest firmware installed also.
Had an Xbox and it failed, bought another one 3 months later and got the red rings og death,.. given up on Microsoft Crap!!! Sony is the best!!!!!!!
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
hi, im from belgium and the fact that the ps3 40 gb version has a 40 % faillure rate is not a lie.
This fact was confirmed by the game stores "Game Mania" in my country ,it's true they have told me theirselves when i took my 40 gb version back cause it wouldn't read discs anymore. They told that the ps3 40 gb does indeed have high selling rates but that 40 % of the consumers allready brought their console's back.
I don't see why they would lie , however i do think that sony would lie and deny this just like microsoft
tried to do for as long as they could.
I had a 360 too it had the red rings of death 3 times in almost 2 years, the fourth time microsoft didn't want to give me one for free.
I was really pissed cause i got more misery than gaming
I cursed microsoft , telling myself never to bye their products anymore.
After that i waited for the oh so powerfull ps3 .
I was really happy when i bought it 3 months ago ,naïve that i was i thought it would really be a good console better then the 360
Now today after 3 months it broke down on me (what a coincidence it doesn't read discs anymore).
Im really angry ,is this the "next gen" experience everyone has been waiting for ??
thanks alot microsoft and sony for this great experience
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
By the wat the arguments that sony gives are just supid.
They just say it is a good system and that the 40 %
faillure rate statement was just bad journalism.
alot of my friends have been having just the same problem.
hardware faillure resulting in your console not being able to read discs. But this counts only for 40 gb version!
All my fellow ps3 owners should better help me so that sony
revises their warranty or maybe even update the hardware!
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
my drive is drive is knackered too, after only 12 days
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
Well it might console (get it?) some of you to know that I will now NOT buy EITHER a 360 or a PS3... I have a Wii, and note that there isn't any mention of failure there. (However it's hardly 'next gen'.) May as well blow the money on a new video card for my PC then. Thanks one and all...
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
sony are the biggest bunch of corner cutting ****s that dont care about the consumer whatsoever, im having the same **** with my ps3 too.............
Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
It may dismay some of you out there to know that I own an 80GB. Bought it 4 months ago (to the day) and mine has failed as well. My friend had the same problem and exchanged his about a month ago. My brother also owns one and is now hoping he "gets lucky" 2 out 3 (all 80GB) is not bad as the saying goes!! Guess we are the 1% that Sony speaks of. Very sad that I had such high hopes and strong belief in this system! I would still take one over Xcrap or WEE anyday though!!
Re: Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
I BOUGHT MINE WHEN MY 360 DRIVE FAILED THINKING IT WOULD TAKE A WHILE TO FIX. I LIVE IN INDIA AND SOME BOY ONE A BIKE TURNED UP THE NEXT DAY AND REPLACED THE 360 STRAIGHT OFF. A WEEK LATER THE P3 DISK DRIVE FAILED. I'M FED UP OF THIS - BRING BACK CARTRIDGES!
Re: Re: Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
sony suck im going on to my fourth 60gb model all suffered the same fault of blue-ray drive failure all with in bout 15 months its now out of warrenty but sony will still replace it as "im so unlucky" to have had 3 systems fail i also find it hard to believe that its not a common fault as the dude at the repair centre swears bull s h i t the ps3 is a f u c k i n pile of ****
Re: Re: Re: Re: PS3 40GB model not so innocet
PS3 purchased Oct07, Blue Ray drive failed 2 weeks later. Unit replaced and hardly 100 hours game play since last November and the Blue Ray drive in this unit has just failed again tonight...
Total S**t
My ps3 failed after 3 months
I guess I had a good run. I always enjoyed Sony's systems, until now. I think they were so gung ho for the Blue Ray deal, that they cut corners to get it to market, thus compromising quality. I went through Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and the rest, when the PS version one came out I was totally thrilled, with Tomb Raider 1 etc... It made me feel like video game playing was revolutionised, it was. But they became greedy and sloppy, obviously from the statistics. My neighbour didn't complain, he threw his PS3 out cause he didn't have his receipt. He bought another. How many people haven't complained that SONY is aware of. It sucks that they will now be considered to be as low as NINTENDO was when they brought out the N-64 crap. I cannot beleive that a system can die this quickly, without research, developement and testing. I really think Sony's prize was to secure the Blue Ray at all costs. OURS!
2nd PS3 Sony SUCKS!!!!
I own a Wii, a ps2, (7th model I've bought). I own 2 X=box 360's and have replaced one because the floppy wasn't opening properly. I never bought an original x-box because SONY RULED. Sony was the best, they had it all, the selection of games etc.. This was all lost in the pursuit of Blue Ray, they held off the release date of the PS3 so many times, they had to rule Blue Ray at all costs. Well they did, and the cost is the loss of PS gamers worldwide. I have six kids who play it all, I bought a PS3, played it with my older son, within weeks it was still playing Blue Ray, but would not recognize a game. We switched it, and the newer one is not working at all withing several weeks. What gives. My kids spilled pop on the 360, we got the four red rings but after unplugging for 24 hrs it is now working. I do know that the 360 placed horizontally will not damage disks, this was posted a long time ago. Since doing it, no problems. Also in the early days I used to lift my power supply up off the ground and let air get at it, I never had problems, but they replaced my power supply anyway. Heating problems vs. no disk reading is a no brainer. I can't wait till the new x-box comes out. I just hope they don't chew off more than they can like the previous kings of gaming did. Nintendo and Sony. They chose their own path and contributed to their death in the gaming industry.
all those cheaters
