Hardware shortage warning issued to retail

Three leading platform holders all warn that supply might not meet demand this Q4

All three platform holders have told MCV that stock of PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii hardware may not meet demand over the festive period.

After a storming year with Wii and DS, Nintendo UK general manager David Yarnton said: “Every year it seems to happen with stock being tight, and I don’t think that this year is going to be any different. We’ve got regular stock coming in. In terms of demand, we can’t predict whether that will be enough at the moment – probably not. But you can’t just turn on a tap with hardware.”

With PS2, PSP and PS3 to manage this year, SCE UK is expecting difficulties too. “This year the challenge for PlayStation UK is logistical,” a spokesperson told MCV.

“It continues to be tight, but we continue to do our best to ensure a flow of stock is available to our customers in this all important buying season.”

Microsoft’s regional VP Chris Lewis added: “We’re working hard to make sure that shortages don’t happen. Inevitably the odd pocket of the EMEA region will have the odd blip, but we’ve got a lot better at this over the years.”

I believe we're going to see a strong showing by the PS3. The XBOX 360 failed to win over customers in Europe the last two holiday seasons (two years ago there wasn't enough stock, last year it was dwarfed by the Wii). The Wii is certainly gonna do well, but I imagine people will start to see that there is no more than a handful good first-party titles.http://www.mcvuk.com/news/28823/Hardware-shortage-warning-issued-to-retail#" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://www.mcvuk.c...tail#

I'll believe it when I see it (with regard PS3 having a good holiday).

The status quo of Xbox 360 outselling PS3 was restored last week in the UK. Meanwhile Xbox 360 has finally managed to outsell the PS3 in Japan as well!

Wii will of course sell most (only Nintendo's incompetence could stop this happening!).

Nintendo all the way this Xmas with the 360 snapping at its heals, Dont get me wrong the PS3 will have its day but I do not think it will be until next year when the BIG titles start to appear!

The only sale Sony are drawing in are people like me who went out and purchased the 60GB unit before they dissapeared!

Long live Mario & the Master Chief and er.......come on Sony wheres the killer app!

All the consoles need to be releasing key titles to sway the consumer base.

The PS3's killer app of BluRay isn't going to last forever as standalone players come down in price and consumers still debate over which HD format will "win".

The Wii had the family won over last year but this Xmas will see the 360 getting party-friendly titles like Guitar Hero 3, Rock Band and Scene It. All Microsoft need to do is churn out subsequent volumes for these games to prolong their appeal.

In terms of must-have titles, the PS3 is looking embarassing now and something needs to be done to get MGS, GTA, etc out into homes.
