Sega: "Golden Compass can be next LOTR"

Sega:

Publisher says upcoming movie and game brand can be as big as Tolkien's mammoth franchise

Sega has compared the family appeal of its upcoming movie adaptation The Golden Compass to that of The Lord Of The Rings.

The publisher is confident that it can use the promotional clout of movie distributor New Line to push the title high up the Christmas chart – and become a success with gamers of all ages.

The title, which is released as seven SKUs on November 30th, takes its cue from one of this winter’s biggest fantasy movie releases. The film has been inspired by the classic Phillip Pullman book – the first in the His Dark Materials trilogy – better known as Northern Lights in the UK.

“Lord Of The Rings was a fantastic success which not only delivered for the core book fans but also managed to appeal to a wider cinema going audience,” Sega’s UK marketing manager Grant Gie told MCV.

“The great thing about The Golden Compass is that the story can be appreciated by all age groups. New Line is targeting eight to 80 year-olds for their movie advertising – the best possible audience.”

Sega will back up New Line’s marketing push with a three-month online campaign across major social networking sites, a four-week terrestrial and satellite campaign and ‘massive’ exposure in cinemas.

For Kids?

Do people realize that the books and movie are based on the author's aethiest views on God? In the movie Adam and Eve are portrayed killing God. This is not a positive, but a subliminally negative story for children to view. I do not plan on ever seeing this movie to support it for families and children to see.

Hi Jayne, you haven't read the books have you? What you have picked up on is just the usual fundamentalist christan fud (fear uncertainty doubt).

The movie does not portray anybody killing god. It's based on the first book. In book 3 of the trilogy, a character who claims to be god dies as the two kids (the heroes of the story) try to save him.

The stories are not christian. But neither are they atheist. They are thought provoking and inspiring.

Not only that, but the more this movie is compared to Lord of the Rings, the farther it will fall. I just went to see the movie. NOTHING SPECIAL! If I hear one more person say it's the next LOTR I will boycott the movie I swear to god. The only word that might be used when relating The Golden Compass to LOTR is RIP-OFF! Little hobbit finds a golden ring, goes on a journey. Little girl finds a golden compass, goes on a journey. Evil guys try to take the ring, if they get it they'll take over the world. Evil guys try to take the compass and if they get it they'll take over the world. Also, anyone notice how similar Uric is to Aragorn?!
