PS3 to incorporate DivX

Deal signed that will see the video technology pre-loaded in the next gen console

Sony’s next gen console is to come loaded with DivX video technology.

For those that already own a PS3, DivX functionality will be made available via a software update.

Developers will be able to utilise DivX’s decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3’s Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which was released by SCE on November 2nd.

Over 100 million certified DivX products have been shipped worldwide to date.

“We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3,” said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX. “Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.”

Indeed! DivX is the codec that the video game masses have been crying out for, there will be no stopping Sony once the PS3 can deliver DivX playback.

I feel so sorry for Nintendo and Microsoft now. Combine this news with the imminent release of Lair, and I think we're going to see the tables turned!

Games sell consoles last time I checked but wait thats something the PS3 is lacking so the only way to sell a PS3 is to keep updating it with updates to allow for more useless features.

The main reason why people want DivX is to play copied films etc.

Ryu Hyabusa. This is good news, yet you use it as another opportunity to get a dig in against the PS3. What amazes me is the amount of times that you come here to do this. Unless you are being paid by Microsoft why do you do it?

If you love the Xbox 360 - great! Celebrate it! but stop hating.

As for DivX it wont sell consoles but I do think it will be a great little addition. If the Playstation 3 keeps getting FREE updates then that must be a good thing?!t little addition. I

Updates are good for sure but I spent £425 on my PS3 so I think its fair if I am little peeved at the fact that Sony seem to concentrate on updates to add minor things or things that dont appeal to gamers!

Lair flopped and thats one game I really was looking forward to!

Well that has not been confirmed as its not made any headlines.

Also to me its a useless feature I would rather have 4 way video chat and or 4 way voice chat in a private session than DivX.

The speculation on the dixv started in June as MS added it in as a media connector, there's been 2-3 lists of features for the upcoming dashboard update bandied about from a couple of previously reliable sources and they include xvid and divx.
Also include the downloads story C&VG took down after about 5 mins yesterday as well.

Personally I'd prefer Dixv, I'd love a player with the umph to throw 720 and 1080 divx around and avoid having to buy a new pc.

I mean 4 way video chat? Only one fo you can talk at a time anyway..

Thats my point! Only 1 can talk at one time but on the old Xbox you could have 4 people talking at once!
