Mario Galaxy aims for Game of the Year crown

Nintendo’s anticipated Wii platformer aiming to beat away challenges from the likes of Bioshock, Orange Box and Call of Duty 4

This time last month MCV was reporting that EA’s The Orange Box was looking to be the odds-on favourite to become the most critically hailed title of not only the year, but also of all time.

However, Nintendo’s massively anticipated and critically acclaimed Wii platform romp Super Mario Galaxy looks set to surpass even The Orange Box’s achievements by capturing the highest average review score of the year.

CVG points out that Mario Galaxy currently averages a massive 97 per cent score on review aggregation site Metacritic, edging it above fellow 2007 contenders Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (95), The Orange Box (96), Bioshock (96), Halo 3 (94) and Gears of War (94).

It also puts the title in contention for the coveted ‘best game of all time’ title, a crown currently held by fellow Nintendo adventure and N64 title The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Sorry Crackdown for me, highly enjoyable, still playing it 8 months later though as it came out earlier this year I suspect it'll be forgotten about.

And Bing, settle down fella, not everyone thinks Nintendos the be all and end all, personally selected Mario Karts, Mario Vs DK and a couple of others aside their output leaves myself and many of my friends cold - as many of my friends do enjoy them though so you know what, we all get along.

They aren't the be all and end all of all gaming and liking them doesn't make you some sort of uber gaming Connoisseur...

And yeah, I find Ryu highly amusing though not in the way he probably thinks...

"CoD4 just screams "hey, I'm GRAW with the CoD label on my box!""

*sigh*

Nice Bing, like you can't just say Mario kart is just a go kart game with a mario sticker on the box, smash brothers is a pretty poor button bash fighting game with a mario sticker on the box etc.

CoD 4 doesn't play like GRAW at all. It plays like CoD 3. Don't have a go at someone for ****ging off something you like because they don't understand it etc and then respond in the same breath bydoing the same to them.

The best mario games are the RPG style ones anyways.

I agree, was interesting to see it appear in the BAFTA's (iirc) even if some of the other nominations there were very wierd. Was a brilliantly fun game, I think I would still be playing it if it weren't for the daft number of games I end up owning. :)

Lets face it, Mario Kart is heavily influenced by Power Drift, and Mario Brothers owes a debt to Pacland, Tony Crowthers Son of Blagger as 2 scrolling platformers not to mention The Edges Quo Vardis. I feel many times we overlook others conbtributions to gaming in favour of a tidy Myamoto the genius soundbite. Anyway....

Mario - simple games for simple pleasures?
Not really, Mario was clearly aimed at the home market rather than being an arcade game stuck on a home console , the pace and structure of the title allowing the home player to explore in their own time, now I prefer Sonic anyday as Mario platformers bore the **** off me but without Mario, Ultimate's games and a few others (Ataris Adventure) we really wouldn't have a home market as we see it.

As a guy who's played Galaxy, the game is really, really tight... You can approach it so casually, yet get so immersed in it.

The two handed operation of the controllers is really nice... your left hand controlling, the right hand gathering random stars in bunches... it's strangely like playing a musical instrument in how the controls rapidly become intuitive.

This game really did remind me of the first time I played Mario 64.

Orchestral score on this game is amazing.

COD4 is an FPS. GRAW2 is 3PS. You're not leading a squad like in GRAW...the NPCs have much more dialog than the ones in GRAW, there's a hell of a lot more going on around you in COD4 and dammit none of this has to do with Mario Galaxy.

I'm personally not a big platformer fan. But I did enjoy the heck out of Mario 64...if this game is anywhere near as good as that one, then I'm gonna have to try it out. And I freaking love Mario Kart games! Yes, when I come home from a long day at work, I do enjoy playing easy, light and cheery games sometimes over intense, stressful (albeit fun) rated-M games.

But hell I got all three consoles, so I've got no face to lose if one or another has a great exclusive.

mr hayabusa. Mario is one THE original stars of gaming. whereas sony and microsoft are losing touch with the original fun and enjoyment of gaming, nintendo are not.

I speak as a person who had been involved in the medium since the 70s and have seen the both sony and microsoft recycling old ideas. Its a shame but they are now suffering in the wake of the big N as a result.

"have seen the both sony and microsoft recycling old ideas".

And Nintendo don't? I mean, come on, they're as regular with the franchises as anyone.

Mario 64 is pretty much the finest game ever. Super Mario Bros is probably the most influential games ever. Mario Kart is amazingly good. U fellas are rather stupid.

And I'm using a Wii 4 this. Nerrr.

Yes, the best video game franchise of all time, starring the most recognizable character of all time, with a fresh, imaginitive game each console lifecycle clearly needs to die.

Hee hee, Mario is nothing more than a stroke of well-crafted fun. And for that it deserves every accolade it receives. See you at the launch tonight.

Wii game development rules

You too can develop a best selling Wii game. Just follow these rules:

1) Don’t do shovelware. You are just damaging your brand(s).
2) Write Wii specific titles. Don’t port. You have to respect the interface difference.
3) Understand that most Wiis live in the lounge. And most other consoles live in the bedroom.
4) Polish, lots. Then polish some more.
5) Realise that you have to provide entertainment for the population at large. FPS titles are not a good idea.
6) You need to market completely differently. PR in women’s magazines will work a lot better than adverts in game magazines.
7) Talk to your wife/girlfriend. They understand the Wii better than you do.
