Bach: Xbox Live has no competition

Microsoft’s Entertainment boss says Sony’s online offering cannot be “called a service”

Robbie Bach, the president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division, has stated that his firm’s Xbox Live network puts the efforts of his gaming rivals to shame.

"It's fair to say that Xbox Live is clearly head and shoulders above anything anyone else has tried to do. We don't have competition," Bach told The LA Times.

"Sony has done some things online, but nothing that can be called a service. We have a big advantage and we're going to keep pressing that advantage.”

"We have a very strong, very powerful computer network that provides the backbone for our service. Perhaps the most important thing we have is over 8 million passionate members who create and define what Xbox Live is. It's a tough thing to create, and we're going to continue to nurture it."

what absolute tosh this guy is talking. Good service yes, but what does it do over Sony's service that makes it worth the subscription fee? Online gaming totally free, eventually Microsoft will have to catch up to this, then make a console that actually works so you don't have to return it for a replacement every 6 months.

Oh my God! I thought Xbox fanboys could not be beat for this sort of talk, and there is a top Microsoft bod coming out with rubbish like that!!! How can anyone trust what MS say?
They have to be running scared of the PSN. It's had some fantastic demos of late and there are some excellent PSN games to download soon. And we have had severl decent PSN games to date.

The value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of users. Microsoft are close to a run-away effect in certain market sectors.
.
Interestingly, the perceived value (to a consumer) of a service that they pay for is higher than the equivalent service offered for free!
.
The (relatively small) monthly fee charged by Microsoft provides not just revenue, but also consumer commitment and loyalty.
.
Sony should charge a fee......but it is probably too late for them now.

PSN is not even a service, it's just a webpage you download stuff from, the online play only works if developers are willing to spend extra on thier own dedicated servers, like Warhawk or EA games.

M$ have a basic set of tool, that developers c****e nad then add there online compnonent to the M$ online backbone, avoding the expensive process of setting up there own dedicated servers, this is what you pay for, this is why 360 have more online features.

Paying to play online is a sin, as a PC gamer I've had online gaming for years, completely free.

I used to pay for a gold XBL account, but I've had/heard enough abuse/lag over servers for multiple games.

Having both the the 360 and PS3 I can tell you that both services (XBL and PSN) have good points and bad points, XBL has more to offer content wise but it places heavy restrictions on developers when it comes to multiplayer (no to little cross platform gaming other then MS specifics) and no mod community, while PSN is quite shallow in content but it is free and developers like Epic Games and Unreal Tournament 3 are trying to offer cross platform gaming (PS3 & PC) and are giving PS3 users the ability to use custom game mods.

Swings and roundabouts, but I'll stick with PC, free PSN and silver XBL.

Why only mention this about xbox live? it happens on the PS3 and the PC as well. Its just the 360 is the console that comes with the headset pretty much as default so everyone has voice com ability.

But yes anyways, as stated they both have good and bad points I guess as they are doing things differently.

Forgot to add, I love it when people complain about a company beating its chest like this. They ALL do it. Save your complaining for whenever they shout something that includes some actual untruths as it were, they often do.

M$ spent more developing Live than they did developing the original Xbox, because they knew what is going to be important in the long haul.
Now they have been improving it for 5 years and the competition are just starting. M$ have this huge USP bolted.
The thing that is lacking from Live is social networking. Add this and they will take a lot of customers away from their competition.

Play both and you will see the difference. PSN is just about as good as Live Silver. Live gold is the best by far. At the moment it has no competition. But fear of competition is what makes it so good. Sony are busy trying to copy Live. Each time something is added to PSN ( ie Gamerpoints etc.), Microsoft have to up the stakes and upgrade Live. The consumer benefits.

Can you do ingame voice chat whilst playing on the PS3? NO
Can you pull up your friends list and see what your friends are playing whilst in a game? NO
Can you send and recieve voice messages? NO
Can you do pretty much loads of stuff with ease with the PS3 interface? NO
Do you get online tracking on what your friends are playing whilst signed into say the Playstation website? NO
Can you send your friend a message from the Playstation website to your friend on the PS3? NO

I can keep going.

There is soo much more to Xbox Live I mean its soo good the only place you could get the COD4 beta was the Xbox 360 'SHOCK HORROR!'

If you only have a PS3 trust me you are missing out on some serious gaming and more.

It's all fine and good that sony's online features are free, but at the end of the day how many games are there to use it on? The only game I've been hearing about for ps3 is metal gear solid 4, (which I happen to hate after the third game so I'm npot bothered) and that's more a single player game than anything else. For god sake, it's £40 a year, it's not like we're paying 40 a month for it! I don't even remember paying for it to be honest, cos it's a measley amount for what you get. Sony should get more games first, then we'll talk, but until then, I'll stick with what I've got thanks.

I'm sorry... But today, for the first time in the 3 years of owning my 360, I tried to play a game online- Halo 3. After an hour of freaking out trying to figure out why my "Profile doesn't have permission to play on XBOX Live", I realized I'd have to fork out money to play. Screw that, it's rubbish. I already paid the $400 for the system. Paid another $500 for my games. That's almost a grand... They can take Gold and stick it where it's brown. Freakin' monetizing buffoons, they only care about the money, not the community. They had foresight to create the 360 in such an elegant manner, that allows for easy development... So I don't want to hear excuses about paying for costs. I've played dozens of PC games online with communities that, when combined make Live look a a kiddie swingset. It's all lies, and it will catch up with them for a few reasons:

* They've become dependant (or rather self-sufficient?) on Live to cover costs.
* When people stop paying for gold, which will happen down the road... What happens then?
* PSN will grow like a mad dog with time. Simply because, it's open-ended and free. It's slow to roll, it's nothing now... But how about in a year?

This kind of crap chaps my hide. I've never felt so harshly against MS, until now. Jerks. And it isn't because I can't afford Gold- the idea is what eats me out. *storms away screaming and foaming at the mouth*
