Stringer: PS3 living up to PS2’s legacy

Sony CEO says that PS3’s retail performance is in line with record-breaking predeccessor

The CEO of Sony Howard Stringer has said that the growing momentum he believes is building behind his firm’s PS3 console matches the sales patterns the company saw in the early days of the PS3.

"The PS3 is not behind the curve compared to PS2 in terms of momentum,” Stringer told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview about his firm’s Blu-Ray platform. “The momentum shift and the energy behind PS3 in time for Christmas is extremely fortuitous.

"It was planned by the PlayStation group, but I think this momentum now – particularly the number of games coming out, including our own as well as third-party – is the same as it was with PS2.”

I don't recall Sony desperately releasing cheaper, cut down models of the PS2 in order to improve sales? Nor them having to beg developers to get on board. Nor them going back on their word about backwards compatibility with the previous PlayStation titles?

I'm assuming all the delayed titles that are now coming out after Christmas are also part of the plan.

Nice one!

Actually, I do recall a price drop on PS2 very early on in its lifespan. It was the same on Xbox and GameCube too. Enough of this ignorant Sony bashing.

Please explain where you found ignorance in my comment…

iirc PS2 had a £30 drop from £299 - £269 and that was after 8 months but then again down to £199 about 3 or 4 months after that. I might be slightly out I can't quite remember.

Though yes price cut wise nothing beats the N64 and the original Xbox.

I don't really see what part of the 1st post is really " ignorant Sony bashing." though, all his points were accurate, surely that makes him kind of 'not ignorant'? :)

Well… I would just like to say, that I do hope Sony get their act together. Nintendo could use some competition right now.

I just don't believe that any of this was planned. Though, who am I to question the plans of a company the size and complexity of Sony. I guess perhaps I'm not seeing the 'wider picture' or the 'long term strategy'. All I see is a shambles.

Rata tat!

I think Reythor couldn't put it better. He's merely reflecting history, ie. the screw-ups from Sony that have come to pass.

The PS2 delivered on all its promises. The PS3 has failed (so far) miserably.

I have a slim silver PS2 and a PSP S&L and I have no intention of buying a PS3 nor the revamped PS2 coming out next year.

--I don't recall Sony desperately releasing cheaper, cut down models of the PS2 in order to improve sales? --
*A couple of posters have already said that the PS2 DID cut price early, as well as the Xbox and N64

-- Nor them going back on their word about backwards compatibility with the previous PlayStation titles? --
*When did Sony ever say that they would always have BC? They recognised it as very important for launch, and not so important now, so droped the feature. Sony never made you a personal promice, so get over it.

--I'm assuming all the delayed titles that are now coming out after Christmas are also part of the plan.--
*Now you are just getting cheeky.

-> most of these points are just sony-bashing, as you are just pointing out percieved flaws in the PS3 sales campain, and not actually saying anything about the topic.

What you should of said is that while the PS3 is in-line with PS2 sales, the X360 sales worldwide is also inline with both, which ultimately means that the X360 is going to be strong competition for many years.

Sagarat, at the risk of dragging this out any further, I'd like to bring to your attention that my comments were focused on the continuing claims from Sony execs that this is all part of a well thought out plan. Of course hardware comes down in price, my issue with Sony is that they are removing features that people actually wanted, and yes - Sony did promise backwards compatibility.

I try to be as unbiased as I can as someone who enjoys playing video games across a wide range of consoles. I am insulted that you should consider my comments as 'Sony bashing'. I have no issue with the PS3, nor the PS2, nor the PSP or any other Sony product you care to mention. It is Sony themselves that I take issue with, not their platforms. They have taken their customers for granted and rested on their laurels. In light of such poor sales and public perception, to announce that this is all actually part of a plan is something I am currently finding rather amusing!

I'm done with this topic now. Say what you will. I'm off.

:)

What do you mean by 'Price cut wise nothing beats N64 and original Xbox' ?? Neither of these had $100 cut off their price BEFORE they were even released - PS3 did in Japan.
Only thing Sony did right. ( but it was still way too expensive, and still is)
Therefore PS3 is still the price cut champion.

"Neither of these had $100 cut off their price BEFORE they were even released"

Thats not a price cut then is it, because it never actually WAS that price.

Are you saying Sony actually advertised the PS3 all over Japan for over 6 months before they noticed they had the price wrong??

Nice to see the Sony defense force is out in full force.

*They recognised it [BC] as very important for launch, and not so important now, so droped the feature. Sony never made you a personal promice, so get over it*

Actually in August of 2005 Phill Harrsion stated that bacwards compatibility was 'a core feature of the PS3 and would continue to be going foward'. So, in a way Sony did make a promise they wouldn't/couldn't keep. They aren't the first nor will they be the last company to do so, so I think YOU should perhaps get over it.

As for the article it all smacks of a company trying desperately to convince the industry that its still number one. Sorry guys, that'll position actually now belongs to Nintendo.

Just now there is no reason to buy a PS3.
And the developers and publishers have switched their resources in a major way from PS3 to Wii and 360.
Former Sony exclusives are no longer so.
Publisher revenue figures show massive income from 360 and PS3 titles being a charity effort at best.
This is the reality of commerce.
Sony are going to come a distant third in this generation.
