Japan: PS3 continues to outdo Wii

Sony’s machine beats Nintendo’s for the second week running in the Japanese hardware charts

The positive effect of Sony’s global PS3 price reductions has continued to have the desired effect in Japan, with Sony’s machine outselling the Nintendo Wii for the second week in succession.

CVG reports that for the week ending November 18th PS3 sold 53,000 units in the territory, well ahead of Wii’s 36,000 – and this was in the week that top selling Wii title Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles was released.

DS still leads the pack, however, with sales of 81,000, with Sony’s PSP bringing up the rear, shifting 66,000. PS2’s weekly sales of 8,800 comfortably beat Xbox 360’s 5,000 sales.

The Xbox 360 HAS been selling and is STILL selling, beit only a few thousand a week thats still a few thousand.

Last gen the old Xbox was selling what a few hundred a week if that?

What is surprising is Japan is a small country when compared to say the USA or other areas but they still keep selling DS Lites, PS2's, PSP'2, Wii's and 360's.

What gets me is how DS Lites keep selling though surely every Japanese person in Japan must have one?? Or maybe 2 or 3 even!

Half a picture?

Is this only half a picture though?
The question is, are there Wii units for sale on shelves?
Is it only selling 36,000 because interest has dropped,
or has Nintendo redistributed supply to the USA where
it continues to sell out? That seems a critical question.
I read that PS3 is not in short supply in the USA, with
many units for sale. A supply surplus can feed sales!

Even if there is a Wii shortage, these are still sales numbers and still valid - this is how the market is right now. The cause is a seperate issue.

In week two Wii outsold PS3
In week three Wii outsold PS3
In week four Wii outsold PS3
In week five Wii outsold PS3
In week six Wii outsold PS3
In week seven the Wii DIDN'T outsell PS3
In week eight Wii outsold PS3...

I could go on...

Factors

This is just 2 factors working together.
1) Physical shortage of Wiis leading to switch selling.
2) Pent up playstation fanboy demand that was waiting for the price drop.

So it has zero relevance in the overall scheme of things.

Whine and cajole the stats all you want, it's now 2 weeks in a row. Last week you said it wouldn't last 2, so, maybe after 3 or 4 you'll start understanding.

Go PS3

...Its hard not to hate Sony, just the company overall sucks, their product quality has gone to **** in recent years and they always try to make propriatary media so they can milk it and force others to adapt it, they just suck. I did like the ps2 a long back in the day, but the 360 is just a better design than the PS3, its so funny to imagine how those fawks at sony are feeling when they see nintendo kickin their asses in both handheld and console, especially when they thought they would destroy the wii and ds with the ps3 and psp, so funny
