Sony’s disc format betters rival Toshiba’s HD-DVD sales by three-to-one
Whist it remains too early to predict if one format will emerge victorious in the ongoing battle to capture the hi-def disc format crown, Sony’s Blu-Ray standard appears to be winning the European war, having recently broken the one million unit sales barrier.
This number represents just under 75 per cent of the total hi-def movie sales in Europe to date, putting the format in a commanding position. If you factor in the sales of PS3 games, which are also on Blu-Ray disc, then total sales reach an estimated 21 million.
Top selling Blu-Ray movies include 300, Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

Mr
This is a big difference in sales between Blu-ray and Hd-dvd and these figures are taken before the PS3 price drop, which should boost the lead further.
In fact hd-dvd player sales are almost non-existent in Euro stores. These 25% hd-dvd sales are actually from loyal Xbox owners who have bought the separate. hd dvd drive.
Re: Must include PS3
I just wanted to say thanks to MCV for the wonderful 'swear word removal' technology on this site, which has turned the words 'c****e' (minus the space) into 'c****e' in the post above.
It is tremendous fun working out the 'rude' words.
Re: Must include PS3
Wow. So I absolutely cannot write 'can' followed by 'use'?
Let me try again. I c****e a PS3.
Brilliant!

Re: Must include PS3
The reason you cannot write can plus use is because the ruder word blocker is blocking another word for your back side (the four letters that are replaced by asterisks). I've noticed some funny ones before that get blocked. It does seem a bit OTT, however. What if I wanted to write that the ***** mightier than the sword?
Anyway back to the Blu Ray / HD-DVD issue, HD's just aren't selling. And so what if the PS3 are included in the figures? The 360 HD's are probably in the HD-DVD figures too. And you can find Blu-Ray players quite easily on the high street. I've seen them in Argos but not seen many HD players except for John Lewis (which had Blu-Rays too including a 52" display showing Fantastic 4 in Hi-Def).
My first DVD player was the PS2 and I'm sure it was for many others too. So it'll be the same with most people's Blu-Ray player being a PS3. If M$oft and others really wanted to push HD-DVD more then the 360 should have included one as standard as being in the PS3 is really helping figures now. I mean, even top end Apple Macs can come with Blu-Ray players now. You can't get them with HD-DVDs.
HD-DVDs aren't selling at all. I went into my local HMV the other week and there were 4 times as many Blu-Rays on the shelf as HD-DVDs. The only thing that could possibly be keeping the HD-DVD alive are the number of Universal movies. Blu-Ray has a far bigger future and it's probably too late already for HD-DVD.
Mixed results for Sony
Sony have used the PS3 as a trojan horse to get blue ray into homes. However the end user has had to pay a premium to finance Sony's media battles. So sales were rubbish.
Now Sony have sold off some of their family silver and some shares, which gives them enough money to throw at the massive losses necessary to subsidise PS3. And now the end user isn't having to pay for Sony's battles sales of the PS3 are going up.
It is going to cost Sony over a billion dollars in this financial year to support PS3 (and therefore blue ray) in the market. I hope it is worth it for them.
Yay, a post that wasn't censored.
This word censor is P A R C
You are kidding right?
Has anyone even paused to realise that these sales figures are based on sales of blu ray DISCS and hd-dvd DISCS!! not players!
Hence the claim "If you factor in the sales of PS3 games, which are also on Blu-Ray disc, then total sales reach an estimated 21 million"
Get it together guys!
Re: You are kidding right?
Like "Tom Cressey" says, stop wondering about how to beat the word censor on here and discuss the issue at hand and get it right, for that matter, as well.
I was about to comment on the 21 million claim, because the PS3 has certainly NOT sold that many units, when I realised and then got it confirmed by the post above that this is indeed sales figures for discs and not players of ANY kind.
The article 'fails' to mention this at all, making it rather misleading.
Re: You are kidding right?
Personally I think the conclusion to this format "war" is a long way off.
With HD-DVD being region free, I can order my discs from numerous different websites and pick up most movies for anything bet****** - £18 delivered to the UK, rather than the £25 - £30 I would pay on the high street. With only some Blu-Ray movies being region free, people only have the option to buy most of their movies in the UK, through the officially monitored sales channels. Out of the 14 HD-DVD films I have, only 3 are from the UK, and one of them came with the player. If the results are based purely on sales of units through UK stores and web sites, there is never going to be a true representation of market share.
Re: You are kidding right?
The region free abilities of the HD-DVD system is probably why this system is not as popular with all the film companies and is why they want to release on BD instead.
And with BD-J now around, what advantages does HD-DVD have over BD?
Oh and to CaptMalarkey - it says in the title that these figures are from Europe, not just the UK. So for Europe sales to be 3 times greater for BD than HD-DVD, I think that's a pretty big indication of how things are panning out.
Re: You are kidding right?
A pretty big indication of what exactly? If they are European figures then there is a fair chance all of Europe are buying their HD-DVD's a hell of a lot cheaper from the states as well.........
Also, BD-J seems to provide the same options as my current HD-DVD add-on for my 360 has done from the start, where there is downloadable content, PIP, local storage, etc.
