Wii’s retro software download service racks up 7.8 million downloads to date

Though it can be hard to get firm data from platform holders regarding the success, or otherwise, of their digital distribution offerings, Nintendo has stated that it has to date made $33 million from paid downloads on its Virtual Console service, IGN reports.

This equates to 7.8 million downloads to date. Of the figure, Nintendo of Japan’s Shinji Hatano stated: "We're currently unsure if this is a lot or low. They're not bad figures.”

The news emerged at a recent Tokyo event where Nintendo revealed it is to team up with Japanese telecoms firm Nippon Telegraph to offer gamers cheaper wireless online accessing an effort to promote its online services.
