Chronic Wii shortages prompt several retailers to offer high-priced Wii deals
Retailers nationwide could come under fire from consumer groups for only selling the Wii console in high-priced bundles, with online forums already buzzing with complaints about the High Street.
Research carried out by MCV suggests that certain retailers that have Wii stock are only selling the sought-after console as part of game bundles costing up to a whopping £400 – over double the console’s standalone price.
Several Gamestation, Zavvi, HMV, Toys R Us and Woolworths stores chose not to sell MCV a standard Wii console for the usual £179.99 when contacted, offering only multi-game bundles as an alternative. Prices ranged from £250 for a Wii with two games at HMV to a five game bundle ay Gamestation for £400.
And at the time of press, callers trying to contact many GAME stores across the UK were met with an automated message stating that Wii was out of stock and that there is no news on when the next batch will arrive.
Online giants Play.com and Amazon.co.uk are simply listing the console as ‘sold out’, with no pre-order system in place and no hint of when the console might be available again. Just this week Amazon admitted to CVG that it had sold its latest batch of 1,400 in just ten minutes.

“We are shipping lots of stock into retail on a weekly basis,” said a Nintendo spokesperson. “As you will have seen from the ChartTrack sales figures, there has been an increase in sales over the past couple of weeks, which proves that there has been stock in the channel. We don’t anticipate being in a zero stock situation, though. Demand for DS will mean that there may be pockets where stock is limited. But we won’t have the same level of shortages as there are with Wii.”

Simple Solution
If you think you're being ripped off, DON'T BUY ONE. That simple really. Boycott these greedy companies. As soon as they find they still have the stock on the shelves just before Xmas, then they will have to lower their prices.
It must be Xmas
This is the 2nd Xmas for which their has been stock issues with the Wii, and the 3rd that their has been shortages of DS's. Whilst we all can understand the situation with the Wii last year (It had just launched), to me it is unacceptable that we are having the same issues again.
Why are Nintendo unable/unwilling to increase their production throughout the year such that come Oct/Nov/Dec they have the required stock to meet demands.
Whilst a unnamed 'Nintendo Spokesman' did give a statement for the above article, I would like an explanation as to why Nintendo are so unprepared. It as if they don't realise Christmas exisits! I would also like to know just how many units are being shipped to the U.K a week, 'Lots of stock' doesn't seem like much of an answer to me.

Re: It must be Xmas
Ha ha, go Carphone Warehouse!!!
Thats the best post I've ever seen on MCV.com.
This whole bundle thing kicked off with the PSP and the DS when they first launched and since then I've never known it to be any different with any other console when stock is in short supply.
When the old DS was in short supply after launch, Hamleys we're selling it for an extra £30 on top of the asking price.
Nobody complained........ but that said, nobody cared about the original DS.
And I agree with the first comment, if you think you're being ripped off, DONT BUY ONE!
And I also agree that it unacceptable that Nintendo have not ramped up production, especially in light of how much money they have made over the last 12 months.
Keep production low and demand high and always stay in profit.
Yeah, nice one Nintendo.
Wii's at CeX
I've seen the stand alone consoles available at the CeX stores. They even have them listed on their website.
How can they manage to get them in but the likes of Game/Gamestation cannot?
Re: Wii's at CeX
My local CEX is currently offering £221 cash & £237 trade in for boxed Wiis. They are selling them for £295. but as others have said if you don't like the price don't pay.
Re: Wii's at CeX
They can't all be second hand though surely? Some look brand new.
If a place like CeX sells more Wii's over Christmas than Game, the industry should really re-evaluate the way it goes about its business.
Re: Wii's at CeX
All this hype around the Wii is ridiculous. My housemate bought one a while back and aside from the first few days after he bought it, we haven't really played on it at all. yes it has got some cool games like Mario and Zelda, but considering the whole hype is around playing as a family together and these are one player games, i don't really see what the fuss is about. in my view, until Mario Kart comes out, its not worth it.
On the other hand, me and my housemates play xbox 360 on a regular basis, the games out for the 360 are in a league of their own and it is by far the best copnsole out there at the moment.

Mr Angry in post #2 would do well to read this article:

Quote "I would like an explanation as to why Nintendo are so unprepared" / "to me it is unacceptable" / "I would also like to know just how many units are being shipped to the U.K a week".
Why? Nintendo owe you nothing. They haven't ruined your Christmas, just supply can't keep up with demand. There's been stock of Wii's all throughout the year, all over the UK. Wake up.
Nintendo are making these things as fast as they can.
Norway - the different country
Us Norwegians like to claim that this is The Different Country, and I guess it is: I was just around to an electronics shop and they had a stack of approx 60 Wiis piled up.
Now you know where to go if you want one...
Re: Norway - the different country
it is stinky
Re: Norway - the different country
Bundles have long been part of the industry. I remember wanting a Sinclair Spectrum as a kid and the only way to but it was as part of a bundle boosting the price out of my price range. The only way to buy one in the end was as from a catalogue, which was at an inflated price but could be paid for on tick.
As long as demand out strips supply in any product, the retailer will take advantage.
Re: G-Ko
G-ko,
Nintendo owe it to all the parents that are rushing around trying to find hardware to explain the situation.
To say theirs been stock all throughout the year is hardly true. At no point have Wii's been freely available to retail this year, they have been on allocation since launch.
Nintendo are either,
a. Deliberately manufacturing the shortage.
b. Showing a lack of confidence in the market, by not making the necessary investment to meet demands.
c. Generally incompetent.
