Tide could be turning as Sony’s machine outsells Wii over a four week period for the first time since launch
Following a period of sustained success in Japan, Sony is celebrating a home console sales victory with the news total sales for the month of November saw PS3 outsell Nintendo’s rival Wii – the first time Sony’s machine has prevailed over a four week period since it launched last year.
Reuters reports that for the month ending November 25th, Sony sold 183,217 PS3s whilst Nintendo shifted 159,193 Wii’s. Industry analysts claim that the combination of the recent global price cuts and PS3’s growing software catalogue are the keys to this success.
Nintendo’s Wii seems to be powering ahead in the US where it recently enjoyed a commanding position throughout the Thanksgiving sales period, and high demand means that the console continues to be hard to find on the UK High Street.
However, Sony CEO Howard Stringer recently claimed that the upsurge in sales seen in the US following last month’s price cut marks a turning point for Sony’s machine in the territory.

What About Wii Shortages?
While this is no doubt good news for Sony, it does not necessarily mean the PS3 is more popular than the Wii over this period - how many Wii's would have been sold if there were not the stock shortages on the Wii that are being experienced nearly everywhere ?
Re: What About Wii Shortages?
Sorry Scottmpamp, but that is a pathetic thing to say. The FACT is that the PS3 outsold the Wii. No ifs or buts, but FACT. We aren't talking a popularity contest but sales figures.
Why can't people just accept that whilst so many people shot down the PS3 even before it launched, that it is now doing well because the consumer does like it and the consumer is now happy to buy one now it's cheaper?
Re: What About Wii Shortages?
I was not shooting down the PS3 in any way, and like i said this is good news for Sony.
My point is, that as with any information you ever read, you need to consider the whole picture, and not just the bare basic information laid in front of you.
The sales figures for Sony are definately positive, regardless of their comparison to Wii, but the tone of the article was alluding to the fact that this is due to increased popularity over Wii, when if you really think about it, the Wii would probably still outsell the PS3 if there were no hardware shortages.
Not every post on this website is from a Sony/Microsoft fan boy - believe it or not.
Re: What About Wii Shortages?
Console bashing is becoming more and more boring everyday !!YAWN!!.
give it up. Enjoy which ever one you've got.
Re: What About Wii Shortages?
I completely happy with my PS3 and will always admit to being a huge fan, but i will admit that these figures probably would have been much different had the Wii not experienced shortages. working in a games store means i get to see the insane demand for Wii's and I totally understand why. Both great consoles but congratulations Sony on a battle well fought.
It's not the end of the war.
Just because Sony is enjoying a mild success, it does not mean that the overall figures are any better for Sony.
They still have a tall mountain to climb, due to their initial arrogance and extortionately high price. So, by all means this is not the end of the war.
However, I would argue that the war is really with Microsoft, surely? Since both are still in the 'traditional' games segment, while Nintendo seems to have marginalised/pushed itself out of the mainstream.
I think the main threat here is if Sony and Nintendo battle it out, it could give Microsoft the opportunity to steal away the crown (as Nintendo was doing at the start), while the other two are really battling it out for second spot only.
Re: It's not the end of the war.
I agree with farz....who cares? what difference does it make to you. You might have either and be happy with it so just enjoy!!!!!! stop moaning and having heated discussions about it!!
