GAME’s Gamestation acquisition cleared

Competition Commission provisionally approves GAME’s deal for Gamestation

GAME board members will be breathing a sigh of relief this morning as the Competition Commission has – provisionally – cleared its £74 million acquisition of former rival Gamestation.

GAME has released a statement saying: “GAME Group plc welcomes today’s announcement of the provisional findings by the Competition Commission that the acquisition of Games Station Limited has been provisionally cleared. GAME will continue to work closely with the Competition Commission through to its final decision expected no later than 23 January 2008.”

GAME will also issue an Interim Management Statement on 11 December.

First Electronics Boutique purchased GAME almost 10 years ago and now GAME take over Gamestation - incredible really. Either way, i haven't actually purchased a game from either of them in the past 12 months as I spend more time shopping online with the likes of Play or HMV

Whats funny is that GAME dont seem to compete with Gamestation - you get a lot more money for trade ins at Gamestation which is weird.

Someone must be taking a bung there........ how can the biggest game store group buy the second biggest and that not be against competition rules?????
im sure Game is bothered by the small independents that pop up here and there.... Nottingham now has 4 Game owned stores and 1 small independent!!! how does that promote competition???
it would be like tesco buying asda, sainsburys and morrisons and leaving you with the CO-OP but saying its ok Wilkinsons have a small food department too... and there is always farm shops and newsagents

Hopefully the take over will lead to the GAME group introducing stable prices throughtout their stores (game and gamestation) which will be good for indies.

How will GAME introduce stable prices? With a greater buying power to squeeze better margins will have a direct impact on the Indies.

If an indie sells a pc game for example @ £29.99 instead of £34.99 I am almost certain that their margins will be hit more than if GAME did it.

Indies arent really a threat to GAME - its the internet and the sooner we can download games the better

Digital downloads just don't work at the moment. Survey upon survey for the music industry, movie market et al show that, in the UK at least, people would rather have a physical product in their hands, and some 'real' faces to help if it goes wrong.

games influence is now showing in gamestation. Hence no more retro trade ins. i knew that would happen.
