New age ratings body proposed

New bill emerges outlining classification authority designed to oversee the BBFC

Julian Brazier MP has presented a bill to create a new industry body, which will work alongside the BBFC in handling age ratings and hearing appeals.

Publishers association ELSPA has reacted to the news by requesting a meeting with the MP to discuss the proposal.

“We note with interest the Private Member’s Bill presented today by Julian Brazier MP. This Bill highlights the importance of the classification of the visual entertainment industry,” said an ELSPA statement today.

“The correct classification of computer games made for adult consumption - covered by the BBFC - is of the utmost importance to the computer games industry. For this reason ELSPA has recently taken time to give evidence to the Byron review and explain how children can best be protected both on and off line; now and in the future. With this in mind ELSPA will request a meeting with Mr Brazier at the earliest opportunity to share our thoughts on this matter and to ensure that this Bill takes our concerns into account.”

Why?

What's wrong with the system at the moment? How difficult is it to understand that an 18 cert. is for an 18 year old? Yet more government interference to make something perfectly clear totally impossible to understand.

According to other reports ( http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/27015/Computer-games-face-curbs" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://www.express...curbs , http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8236&Itemid=2" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://www.next-ge...mid=2 ), this isn't just about getting age ratings right, it's about allowing MPs to overrule and ban releases - even for adults!

Age ratings for children are fine. But otherwise - it's bad enough that we still have the BBFC telling adults what we can watching, without allowing too MPs the power to ban releases because they think the BBFC is too lenient(!)
