Long-awaited feature finally arrives alongside Nintendo Europe website relaunch
Having originally promising to do so longer ago than MCV can remember, Nintendo’s pledge to allow gamers to swap their Stars Catalogue points for spendable Virtual Console currency has finally been realised with the relaunch of the Nintendo Europe website.
Though the star-swapping page is down at the moment, probably due to high demand.
Every Nintendo game in Europe comes with a voucher which can be registered on the Nintendo website for Star Catalogue points. These points can then be exchanged for various goodies – normally the likes of wallpapers and ringtones but occasionally games or collectibles.
However, now these Stars can be exchanged for Wii Points that are spendable on the Wii’s Virtual Console downloads service. With an exchange rate of four Stars per Point, a dedicated Nintendo fan could find themselves with as much as 2,500 Virtual Console points to spend – which is enough for three free Mega Drive downloads, for instance.

ABOUT TIME!
About time they implemented this feature!
Looks like I'll be picking up a few games on the VC when I get online next. Not a bad exchange rate actually!
Re: ABOUT TIME!
Now if only Microsoft would follow suit with gamer points....
Hmm?
Re: ABOUT TIME!
ive had thousands and thousands of points for years and never been able to spend them as i dont want tat like screensavers and wallpapers!
Re: ABOUT TIME!
Too late for me. I got bored of waiting for this (and a decent game to come out), so I sold the Wii.

Not bad at all
Finally!
I had just under 10000 stars, so went to try and convert them.
7 hours later it finally worked! (no surprise that Nintendo's site got hammered due to this)
Couple of caveats:
1. It's not a fully automatic system. You redeem stars for either 100/300/500/1000 wii points, and upon purchase the site gives you a Wii Points Card code. I can understand why Nintendo have it set up this way, but it's a shame they can't just 'Transfer' the points into your account.
2. You can only redeem 2 codes per day. Not too much of a problem in the long-term, but a slight kick in the nertz for those of us who have saved all their points up and have to claim multiple codes to get them all converted.
Otherwise, it works! Now just to decide what to buy as I'm running out of space on my Wii!
Re: Not bad at all
Also, from the wording on the site it seems Nintendo will be rationing the number of codes over a duration, cannot tell whether this is right now or in the future but "There are xxx points cards of this value available" sounds a little ominous.
Re: Not bad at all
The reason Microsoft won't do this for gamerscore is you earn gamerscore for completing objectives in each game, not for buying products or paying for garbage like Nintendo Power.
Go play on your Wii fit board and let the gamers play actual games.
Low stock???
Why the hell should there be limited stock for virtual points? I don't want to be limited to 2 x 100points transactions each day. Trust Nintendo to screw up somewhere...
Re: Low stock???
@Matt
Its always easy to spot the men from the boys on any forum.
You really do sound like an insecure ****.
Re: Low stock???
i presume stock is limited so people dont crach the servers by downloading vc games at the same time
Re: Low stock???
I think whatever Nintendo are doing here is frankly unaccepable.
I've got just spent £450 Nintendo products (not including the third party stuff) I've registered it to get 3200 stars and I can't even convert the points I have so that I can download a browser they didn't even make.
I fully expect that my stars should be convertable to wii points in one go and at the click of a button, without loads of messing about.
If I'd have known it was going to be this much hassle I wouldn't have bothered.
I've had club nintendo's website break when I was registering products, the shop break when I tried to log in then I can't convert ANY starts to Wii points because they are out of stock on a virtual product!!!!
The more I say it, the crazier it sounds!
The whole thing is a complete dogz dinner.....
cant do it
i have got 1250 stars for registering my brand new nintendo
wii and i put my password and email address in to convert to wii points but just keeps on saying ERR-0300 can anybody help me my email address is speedgmad95@hotmail.com
thanks

Check this out.You need to be from one of the countries listed in the nintento club site.Otherwise just change the country option inside the wii menu in order to be able to link your account.Hope you can do it now.I've just linked my account but no cards available yet :( :( :(
Too much arsing around
My good god, how can there be a limited number of /virtual/ points swappable for /virtual/ stars for /virtual/ games? I can only seem to swap one bunch of stars per day and the larger denominations of points are ALWAYS sold out, leaving no option but to buy pitiful 100 point "cards", meaning it's going to take FOREVER to convert all my stars, meaning it's going to take FOREVER to type in 5 million of those 16-digit codes in on the shopping channel, meaning it's going to take FOREVER to actually GET any VC game. Why Why WHY not just swap stars for VC games DIRECTLY? REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh
Re: Too much arsing around
RE: cant do it
Have you linked your wii shop account to the nintendo star account? If you haven'**** easy to do, just go on the wii shop channel then go on (I think) settings, then go on the option that has a nintendo club symbol and type in your email and password, this should work!!! (If these instructions aren't entirely accurate then go on the nintendo website star account FAQs under something like linking my nintendo star account to my wii shop channel account!
Hope this helps! (-:
Re: Too much arsing around
do you need to be linked to the internet on the wii before swapping your stars for points or can you just swap them on the site and then go to the wii store. I have linked my wii to my nintendo account.
This is Bull
If they knew that they would not let too many people exchange stars at the same time bcause of the server crashing then they shouldn't have started it in the first place intead of wstling everones time saying they can do sommething they can't. i think this is all bull****
Re: This is Bull
I know a great way to get free 1000stars (not points) but that still accounts to 200pts.
This isn't a scam or anything... When you buy your wii there is 2 cards in there, a Wii console and a Wii sports one
Register the console first -1250 pts(forstarting up as well..)
then register wii sports another 100pts (Fors some reason..)
I registerd a game and theres no points still.. its stupid... :(!!!!!!! i just want the internet chanlel
And then regidster wii

Re: Never any points left!

Re: Never any points left!
the only problem i seem to see, apart from everything that has been said above, is that the vouchers dont seem to be in the games anymore, i accumulated quite a few stars already, but without vouchers in new games i dont see the system carrying on
Re: Never any points left!
I've only seen the 100 points voucher on this nintendo site and its doing my head in! I wont give in though one day there has got to be a 500 point voucher availible!
Re: Never any points left!
PETITION TO SORT OUT THE STOCK PROBLEM!
I think we all agree this is an absolute joke.
Can we all start emailing Nintendo on internetenquiries@nintendo.co.uk and filling out the form at http://ms.nintendo-europe.com/accountreport/enGB/report.html" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://ms.nintendo....html to put some pressure on!

Re: Cant Git Thm

Re: Re: Cant Git Thm
Hi there, look, I have been trying for weeks to try and convert my stars to points and when I try, there is NEVER anything available. This is even when I come home from work at 6am!!!! So, as sad as it seems, I am gonna wait till 12 midnight tonight and try then. I will let you all know the outcome!!!!!!
Re: Re: Re: Cant Git Thm
Yeah, I try to get points too, but all that is available are the 100points one. I mean, what can you even get for that much?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Cant Git Thm
They only have larger ones (500 + 1000) and no smaller ones when I go to the Europe store
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Cant Git Thm
Finally got round to doing all this, totally agree with the above, what a faff.
1. Scratch the silver off a card that came with the game
2. Enter the dozen or so letters/numbers into the website
3. Do the four page survey
4. Receive 250 stars
5. Repeat 15 times to get 4000 stars
6. Go onto the Wii
7. Link the accounts
8. Take the option to swap stars for Wii points
9. Swap your 4000 stars for 1000 Wii points if it's available (WHY? are they limited FFS!)
10. Finally, you can spend it on a N64 game.
Or do 8 more games for 'World of Goo' which is 1500 points
Now one transaction per day, resets at midnight.
If there is a logic in what they are doing, it is lost on me, and they aren't telling.
I only did all of this to get N64 Paper Mario, which has always been expensive in UK, but jeez they make you work for it
