Tretton: We underestimated PS3 'education process'

Platform holder’s US CEO admits firm believed gamers would take console more quickly

CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America Jack Tretton has admitted that many consumers were still left in the dark about PS3’s capabilities following the console’s launch.

In an interview with GameDaily, to celebrate his first full year as CEO, Tretton said:

“We are on our fourth platform introduction, and this business is never easy. There is always formidable competition. There is always education that needs to go on with consumers.

“But the honest answer is that while we knew price would be a challenge for the PS3, we underestimated the education process and the fact that there is a lot of information for consumers to absorb about PS3 given its advanced technology. This will be an ongoing challenge, but we think we've made great strides over the past year.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Tretton said PS3’s online PlayStation Network doesn’t need improvement to compete with Xbox Live, and promised that PlayStation Home would be “like nothing seen before”.

Compete with Xbox Live directly but HOME might be something that could if its done properly and has no fees but something like HOME very well looks as though it could eventually have a charge.

Sony have given mixed messages about the PS3 but once they have a larger selection of games and exclusives I think it will be easier for those looking to buy a PS3 a better idea.

Personally I say this gen its all about having more than one machine Xbox 360 and PS3 and Wii are very much different in their own way. PS3 could be seen as more of an investment based on technology but the 360 more so as a games console and great online and with the Wii just an overall fun kind of system that gets all sorts of folk attracted.

"there is a lot of information for consumers to absorb about PS3 given its advanced technology"

Perhaps this is why Sony has been busy removing so much of the technology from the PS3. Fewer features mean less for the consumer to 'absorb', thus increasing sales.

I really do hope Home will be “like nothing seen before” - and not just a 3D avatar chat room.

I have read a reasonable ammount of info on Home, and it doesn't look that exciting. Then again, I tried Second Life and got bored quickly, as that is similar. Both look like glorified chat rooms, although Home will probably contain less sex.

On to the actual article. Sony started off saying that the price isn't an issue, now they are? talk about a back-peddle.

Why don't they simply say "We have realised our mistakes and learned from them, from now on we will strive to give the customer the best product we can"?

The thing about the Playstation is that it has a lot of potential but you wont get to see games that take advantage of it until 2009 at the earliest. Look at the PS2. It was released in but it wasn't until 2006/7 that anything decent came out for it. FF XII and God of War II. The Xbox 360 doesn't have a Blu-ray player, but this 'advantage' is more of an accident waiting to happen. Xbox 360 video downloads will kill it off within 2 years. The 360 IS a superior gaming console. More FPS games, more support. Family games like Viva Pinata and Scene It mean it will beat the Wii in the long run. I would consider getting a PS3 if Metal Gear Solid turns out to be brilliant. But i will probably wait for the Xbox 360 release.

Sony have only removed minor things from the revised PS3 but the main technology like HDMI 1.3, blu-ray, wifi, bluetooth is still all there.

Gamers these days usually want more - they want more kit, the PS3 offers more but look at the cost, look at the selection of games.

Sony has all the hardware but Microsoft have all the games and the online content.

Tretton misses the point completely,

You don't need to tell people the iPhone looks great, and is fun to use. If you did there must something lacking with it.

The truth is a great product always sells itself.

That what all say if u aren't on their side. Oh its a microsoft fan boy, oh its a sony fan boy, oh a D.S. fan boy... blah blah blah! No I'm a true Sega fanboy at heart. I just know Ps3 is the best on the market in terms of money and where the developers are going. I actually am a Gamestop store manager. I have had all the systems. I'll bet you guys that talk bad about the ps3 haven't even played one. Talk about ignorance. At least try them before you diss them!

I bought a 360 because the ps3 kept getting delayed and I couldn't wait any longer for next gen gaming. I did get a ps3 when it came out. Slowly over time as it began to come out with more games and some good games, I found myself useing my 360 less and less. Belive me I had alot of fun on my 360 (GOW and Crackdown were awesome) but it seemed to me that the ps3 seemed to be geared more to my age group or maybe things that I was interested in more (xbox live and its acheivements seems geared towards the teen ages) . I am 35 and have been gaming since PONG and I guess that the ps3 just seems more "grown up" so maybe thats why I find myself playing it all the time. I did end up selling my 360 as I wanted to get something for it before it RROD'd me.

GOW and Crackdown are just two of a large selection of great games. Most of the better ones are not out on PS3. Judging by you comments, you seem to be saying that because you are older, you want a machine that does a bit of eveything. Fair enough, but I have a different point of view. Firstly, I am far older than you, have played just as long and as I have a job, which I assume you have, I do not have to make do with second best. If I wanted Blu Ray films, Which I don't as I don****ch films at all, I would purchase a top of the range player to go with my top of the range Plasma TV. Not make do with using a basic PS3 player. And, as I want a console that plays the best games, has the best live experience and the biggest games choice, including backwards compatibility, I have the top of the range here too. Xbox 360 Elite.
We have both made our choices and are pleased with them. I respect your arguments, as I hope you do mine.
But we should both agree on this ... If there was no Microsoft or no Sony we would both be worse off. It is the competition between the two that keeps the innovation going on both sides. Whatever console we choose, we both win because of this.

My problem isn't with the what direction 360 is going. I loved gears of war, cod2, ninety nine nights, and dead rising. It actually is that The system itself breaks way too easily. I will possibly get one in the future if they can fix their problems. I took in 2 broken elites again today and switched them out because they bought it in may near the launch and purchased prp warranties and they fussed about how they can't get a new warranty on their new systems because Gamestop no longer offers them. So when the systems are officially debugged I will get one until then I will have my completely bug free true HD machine.

In response to JUSTIN's comments:

Mate, you're not a SEGA fanboy at heart cos if you we're, you'd bashing the hell out of Sony for killing the Dreamcast. The PS3 is not the best on the market in terms of Money and where the developers are going, the Wii is.
And even then, the 360 is second. The PS3 comes last in that table.

So unreal came out exclusive for p3 console! Haze (Ghost recon team) comes out jan 15th(exclusively). Rock star is going exclusive after gta 4 starting with Rockstars west game and red dead revolver 2 cause the 360 can't compute that much info. The burnout team is talking about going exclusive with p3 after paradise. Factor five went from game cube to p3 exclusively. MGS4 will be exclusive. Persona 4, brave story, shin mugami tensei, level 5 and brave story are all exclusive rpgs. FF13 and kingdom hearts 3 all exclusive. so tell me whose going to wii?? nintendo and childrens games like chicken shot, zack and wiki, manhunt 2 (ps2 and psp title), soul calibur legends(5.5 in game informer). who else?? definately not a lot. No more heroes..... (killer 7 team). If you can enlighten me I would like to know. Cause with most of ubisoft, level 5, rock star, square enix, atlus, and koel going exclusive I wonder who is going to be left in the market. When 360 only has team ninja, silicon knights, 2k boston, and halo 3. Epic and midway are talking about exclusitivity with ps3. And as a matter of fact, I had a dreamcast at launch and still have it. I am not mad because sony defeated them cause that is business. and I wouldn't be suprised if a dc2 came out. third the money is right cause if you bought everything that comes for p3 on 360 you would pay around 800 dollars(elite with 1 year xbox live, hd player, with wifi) so the price is definately right. People are way to ignorant and cheap to dish out an extra 50 or 100 dollars for way more stuff. The fact that p3 is only getting 360's biggest titles and their own awesome exclusives should say that they don't settle for mediocrity. I'm out! btw Unreal Tourniment 3 is so incredible addictive that 360 peoples and wii peoples don't know what they are gonna miss!
