Killzone screens land Guerilla in more controversy

Slight doctoring on latest FPS screens causes predictable fanboy backlash

Guerilla Games, the developer of hot PS3 FPS Killzone 2, has found itself embroiled in fanboy-angering controversy yet again with the admission that the screenshots it released of the game last week were doctored.

When Killzone 2 was first showed off to the world at E3 2005 the world was astonished by its amazing graphics – so when it turned out to be a pre-rendered video the tiresome internet backlash was unsurprising.

Now PSU.com has sparked off controversy once again by posting images of the screenshots side by side with the actual in-game video shown at the most recent E3, which appear to show that the recent stills have been enhanced a little.

Reacting on the PS3 forum, one of Guerilla’s developers has confirmed that a little retouching had taken place, but has claimed that it was just to offset the usual quality loss suffered when stills are taken from a video source.

see, this would matter except for this simple fact: we've seen it in-game and in motion. even without the doctored pictures, this game is the most visually stunning game to ever grace a console.

The graphics are nice, but the original Killzone was a pretty poor game.
I would also be concerned that they make the game good gameplay wise and not just the graphics.
Early signs are promising however.

@ kingpwn:

Well, I wouldn't say it's "the most visually stunning game ever" because we have not yet seen the final article, although I acknowledge that Sony is pumping over £20M into its development budget.

So, I wouldn't put my neck out like that. I've seen the vids and it's a little bit well...'grey' for my liking, but that doesn't mean it's ****.

I've actually been enjoying playing Killzone: Liberation for the PSP. Although it's in isometric view, it's still very engrossing and I've enjoyed watching the PSP technology being put to good use. I own a PSP and PS2, by the way.

So, I'd say give it time and let's not worry about a few 'touch ups' here and there but at the same time let's not quite yet pray at the alter either.

It could turn out to be a false god...!

When the first shots of GTA4 were released, they looked amazing. I've seen the latest GTA4 video and it looks nothing like it did 2 months ago.

Will this be the case for Killzone?

Sony are masters of selling the public one thing and giving them another, lets hope this time its for real.

considering how they faked the original trailer for the game, and now this, and we trust any of the information about this game.

On a side note, it is easy to tell these shots are fiddled with, as there are shadows on the walls and floor. All of the videos I have seen do not have shadows (which is a rather crucial graphical effect). They do self shadowing, but not proper shadows.

Don't believe me? look at one of the ingame videos on gametrailers.
