Sony chief says three-year company restructuring has put firm in an excellent position

Speaking earlier today, Sony chief executive Howard Stringer said that the firm’s three-year cost cutting reforms, which included the sale of its Cell CPU business to Toshiba, had placed the firm in a strong financial position that will allow it to “bring back some of the wow factor that is the Sony trademark” and allow Sony to focus of innovation going forwards.

He was also upbeat about the recent spike in PS3 sales, claiming that 200,000 consoles were selling each week in Europe and up to 50,00 each week in Japan, CNBC reports.

Stringer also added that the PlayStation Network is one of a number of products, along with the likes of its new OLED TVs and Rolly music player, that prove Sony is once again wowing the global technology market.

Sony also vowed to make smarter use of properties currently owned by its numerous divisions, such as the Spider-Man movies and singers such as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce Knowles. This is something Sony has previously come under fire for – but it now says that improving its record in this area will allow it to take on content-providing rivals such as Apple and Microsoft.

For a company selling 200,000 consoles a week in Europe, they don't seem to be selling many games. Or at least, they don't seem to be showing up on the all-formats chart.

Still, selling the Cell processor to Toshiba seems like a good idea. Now all they need to do is sell them Blu-ray too. Oh, wait...

Wait, you have the latest figures of the PS3 software sales of the last week in the entirety of europe... wow nice man! The rest of us in the real world don't know yet but do know the PS3 is outselling the XBOX in every country in europe except the UK, so make sure you don't take those software sales as a general lead of european sales. Good luck! =)

PS3 sales for all Publishers in Europe are way ahead of those for XBox, we are told the BD pressing lines in Austria are just about coping. XBox is an English language phenomenon.
Any way its way above 200K per week according to GFk, great for the Industry

Competition drives the market and I for one am pleased that Sony's console is finally seeing the turnaroud it clearly deserves. With titles like Uncharted, MOH and Ratchet & Clank finally seeing their way into the stores along with a host of new titles for 2008 things are definitely looking up for the PS3.

I may even buy one.

In the last week in our UK store, PS3s have flown off the shelf. Far bigger sales than XBox, and games are doing quite well on PS3 too. Just wonder what the Wii could have done if we had any though, although personally I believe the PS3 has the better future of all the new consoles.

XBOX 360 has sold alot of consoles so it is in a good position and established whereas the PS3 is picking up but face stiff competition still regardless of how they have performed recently. Sorry Fanboys

I predict that by 2020 the PS3 will be outselling the Wii.

This will be largely due to the release of Home in the first quarter of 2019.

“Suprisingly high sales”

200k sold in the UK and 50k in Japan a week would put it at at least 1 million a month plus US sales; with the 360 only at the 11 million mark recently (after being on the shelves for 2 years) they are pretty good sales; especially with most AAA due for release next year. Wii's are still selling out each month and they're making 1.8 million so unless they're selling 800,000 ps3's a month in the states it's still fewer than the wii.

Will all of you please note that it is christmas so sales like this will NOT continue it is only normal for the PS3 to do well this time of year after all it is its first christmas. The wii has already been out for 1 christmas even if they were so hard to find and well the 360 is now on its 3rd christmas. The key to success is consistancy both wii and 360 have sold well all year PS3 has not and once christmas sales have spiked come january the PS3 will be back on the shelves as per usual selling just a few on the basis its a Blu-Ray player.

Seems like common practice these days to label anyone having a positive few of the PS3 as a 'fanboy'. *Yawn*

Thats it, I'm going back to my Amiga 500.

@13 - Be careful, you wouldn't want to start off an ST vs Amiga war on here would you... This PS3 v X360 v Wii one is bad enough already.

If you did though, I'm with the Amiga all the way!

I am saddened at the poor grammar, punctuation and spelling used during these discussions.

“Lots of people have a 360”

So the only thing left to buy is either a PS3, Wii or both.

The PS3 selling 200,000 a week in Europe was just recently due to it coming up to X-Mas, dont forget when the price went down of the 60gb they were selling very well then the sales died down after that. The 40gb PS3's werent exactly flying off the shelves either.

The PS3 is a good piece of technology to own but unfortunatly imo as a games console its superceded by the Xbox 360.

@Reythor - My Amiga 500 has lasted me since 1988 and still works (19 years ago!!!). Not had a 360 myself, but mate of mine got through 3 in 8 months. I think the Amiga wins. If in 20 years time anyone is playing on a 360 I'll be amazed. And I don't think you'll be seeing 360 emulators like the number you can get for the Amiga.

Amiga wins without question.

Amiga1200 rulez over 360 and A500!
Sure, Halo3 is fun but Alien Breed, Super Stardust and Banshee were the best!
