Studio boss chose to censor Euro No More Heroes

Grasshopper’s Suda 51 says that the ‘broadly growing Wii market’ was behind the decision

Following this week’s news that the European version of Grasshopper’s highly anticipated No More Heroes will be censored, as per the Japanese version of the title, the game’s developers have issued a statement claiming that it was their decision – and not publisher Rising Star Games – to release the toned-down version of the title in this territory.

A joint statement from Grasshopper CEO Goichi ‘Suda 51’ Suda and Marvelous Digitial Contents Company president Yashiro Wada reads: “First, let me say how honoured I am that everyone in Europe is expecting No More Heroes.

“The sales point of this game is action. Both I and Wada san have concentrated on making the best possible action game for the Nintendo Wii. We have chosen to release in Europe the same version as has shipped in Japan considering the broadly growing Wii market.”

The US version of the title will include all the original in-game gore.

Any how got Killer 7 and that will be the first and last, i Do Not support Censorship and no one that does

Japan has strict regulations, most of Europe doesn't.
What happened Suda, I thought 'punk wasn't dead' and NMH would be "more violent than Manhunt".
Buy trying to get the casuals all you're getting is the loss of your true market, the hardcore.

It doesn't matter if it has blood or not, cos it's the gameplay that counts, and it looks ace. BUT it would have been much more simple just to have the option for blood, cos it makes it much more satisfying. Anyway, with the amount of swearing and violence in it already, I wouldn't imagine that the people buying it would mind the blood.

Saying Europeans cant handle blood but Americans can is just plain racist!! And hiding behind Rising Star's back while fans raged at them was the last straw. Suda51, you sir are a disgrace. Not buying.

When do these video game companies ever give up their thinking in regional territories? It's a shame that our world with all its progress in globalization is so antiquated when you're looking at the video game market. Supporting the broadly growing Wii market, heh. I tell you what, that's just a marketing strategy... Less violence > lower rating by BBFC, OLFC, PEGI, USK etc. > More adults will allow their kids to play that game > higher sales. The cheerless fact is that No More Heroes never was meant to be a game played by kids... Well I won't buy a censored version, I'm really fed up with the situation here in Europe. We're almost always the last ones to be able to buy a game (besides the Australians), we have to pay higher prices than American gamers and we get censored games... No thank you!

“The sales point of this game is action. Both I and Wada san have concentrated on making the best possible action game for the Nintendo Wii."

Really? Then why do the reviewers complain about 40% of the game being spent trying to [get to the game]...? How is that the best possible action, when clearly the assassination missions are great and the rest is awful? Watch the video review at IGN, for some ghastly details that belong back i*****, at best.

I was willing to tolerate all that, and was just about the pre-order the game, for the style, gore, etc, when I found this, looking for an official release date. But now...? No. I bought a Wii for THIS game, and THIS is how you thank me, Suda? What the HELL are you thinking? Do you EXPECT european gamers to buy it, now that you've removed one of the main reasons to tolerate and buy this very flawed game?

was really looking forward to this title, there are only a few types of games I like and with the limited number of titles out for wii, I have played the majority of the better ones. when I heard this was censored I thought I’m not that shallow as to not purchase the game for the lack of blood so like a complete muggins I bought it, after about 15 mins of playing I completely regretted it. I’ve seen vids on youtube of the yanks version, and the whole games is supposed to look like a manga cartoon and the blood looks brilliant. Completely ruins the feel of the game. Although I don’t agree with it I could see why the BBFA banned manhunt 2, after that kid in Leicester got murdered. But this is a comedy game, with cartoon graphics, it’s stupid. Seeing as it was the choice of the developer and not of the BBFA to censor this game, personally I think that it’s a publicity stunt and the uncut version will be released later.
I know it’s a bit naughty, but I feel I have no choice, after this and Manhunt, I think I’m gonna trade this in and get my wii chipped so I can download the US versions. Which means I will probably never pay for a wii game again. Big losses not only for Suda 51 but also for Nintendo.

In Australia on wii, we get manhunt 2 banned outright, now this bs. if madword gets banned or is censored i'm pawning my Wii. Why should i keep it. i can play Gears 2, dead rising any number of mature 360 or ps3 games completely intact. Boycott this game. don't put up with censorship for no reason. if you boycott and their sales are garbage then the next game they won''t be so quick to censor, will they. paternalistic jerks, at least Rockstar had the balls to try and get it through. Suda51 what a joke he acts all hard. "gorier than manhunt 2" then censors his own game, what a lightweight. they didn't even try to get it through. No more heroes. yes there are but Suda51 is not one of them
