Microsoft comes out on top in annual poll; Supermarkets and new release discounting cited as biggest problems
After a storming year of success, Microsoft took the lion’s share of the praise in the 2007 MCV Retail Survey, with Nintendo also attracting a great deal of commendation from video game stores all across the country.
The star-studded release of Halo 3 – which saw high calibre celebrity endorsement from the likes of Pharrell Williams and Christian Slater – put Microsoft top of the list in the ‘highlight of the year’ poll, while also winning ‘best attitude and quality to retail’ and ‘best overall company’. The survey also considered Xbox 360 most likely to win the next-gen console battle.
Special mention should also go to Nintendo, which performed nearly as well in the polls, finishing just behind Microsoft in a number of key categories. The success of Wii finished just behind the release of Halo 3 as the highlight of the year with 30 per cent of the vote, while retailers considered Nintendo the second best overall company with 23 per cent. Nintendo won’t be overly enamoured with the category it did top, winning 57 per cent of the vote for the ‘biggest disappointment of the year’ for lack of Wii stock.
Despite worries over supermarket trade infringement and discounting on new releases, the results of the survey also show general optimism from retail, with a whopping 85 per cent feeling confident about business in 2008, and 73 per cent predicting greater Christmas takings this year than last.

Re: lol
Agreed. With the problems we've suffered with the 360 going wrong and the difficulty faced when trying to get them sent back, it makes a joke of it. This survey should be done in the New Year.
It's correct about the shortage of Wiis, but highlights have been Mario Galaxy sales (better than Halo for us now) and the phenomenal upsurge of PS3 sales in the last two weeks, surpassing all expectations.
Excellent!
In Microsoft we trust ;-) hehe
They have the best games console on the market they DID have issues but thats on the old batch of machines and Microsoft has given everyone 3yrs warranty on 3 red lights so stop whining.
Top selection of games, best controller, best online and best choice of accessories.
Overall if you look at it Microsoft ha**** the jackpot with the 360 well done to them.
Re: Excellent!
While the 360 failure rate was a missery for most there does seem to be some sour grapes with regards to MS's success with the 360, judging by some of the comments here at least.
Re: Excellent!
If you ever tried calling Microsoft from Gibraltar for service, you would know how pathetic their call centre is. It took me 12 phone calls (at international rates) each between 30 - 60 mins, plus a few e-mails to get them to colect my machine. In the end I had to provide an address in Spain.
What a joke
How the wii hasn't come out on top I don't know; bigger sales than any other console - more originality; it's certainly had the biggest impact.
The 360 should be winning blandest ga*****xperience of teh year for it's supposed "great year of games" it's has come up with a massive lack of variety. If Microsoft want to seriously compete they should be a lot further down the line than they are after 2 years on the market.
With the ps3 faults it should have left it for dust; Sony ballsed up and Microsoft should have capitalised instead it was Nintendo.
I don't own a wii and don;t particularly want one but hats off to nintendo
Re: What a joke
The Wii isn't top because of the shortages, something that isn't decided in this country!
The people who have been asked the questions have been questioned at a time when they are sick of people asking for Wii, Wii Play, Remotes etc, so i doubt they are singing Nintendos praises right now.
