Sales of Sony’s machine climb 285 per cent in November as resurgence continues
The good news keeps coming for Sony, with the latest figures from NPD showing that sales of the PS3 grew faster than any of its console rivals in North America in November.
The machine sold 466,000 units in the region in November, a 285 per cent increase on the month before. Mind you, sales of Sony’s other machine were hardly slow either – the long-lasting PS2 sold 496,000 whilst the handheld PSP achieved 567,000 sales.
However, Nintendo’s machines are still way ahead of Sony’s performance. 981,000 Wii’s sold in the period whilst a massive 1.53 million DS’ were snapped up. Microsoft had a good month, too, with sales of 770,000 for its Xbox 360.
On the digital front, Sony now has over 1.8 million registered PSN users in the US, who between them have downloaded more than 34.5 million pieces of content. Globally there are now three million Sony network users, with 60 million pieces of content having been downloaded.

Not enough
PS3 = 466K
360= 770K
This is with the pent up demand that was released by the PS3 price cut. Sony gaming is losing as much as a billion dollars this year whilst Microsoft gaming has turned a profit at last.
The fundamental problem for Sony (now they have solved the retail price anomaly) is that the development community have switched a lot of resources away from their machine. So, ultimately, it will have a smaller library of games to run on it. So it makes a far less appealing purchase proposition for the end user.
Re: Not enough
Didn't take long for the fanboy that is bruceongames to get in on this one did it... How long has it taken MS to make profit in this marketplace? Never hear of a loss leader? Once sony get the machine into more and more homes, they will start making money one the back of games, bluray, downloads etc. And they can afford to do this on the back on the sucess of previous consoles - ps1 and ps2.
The machine hasn't even been out a year in the UK and it's in a better position that the PS2 was at this stage of its life. I can't wait to see you and others eat humble pie.
Re: Not enough
Should have been "...on the back of games..." and "..back of the successes.." above. Sorry, my mistakes.
Re: Not enough
Sony have been selling assets off, left right and centre over the past couple of years (Cell manufacturing capabilities, robotics division etc...) . And they also have been borrowing quite a bit of money too. I'm not too sure how much they can afford to lose on the PS3, just to get the PS3 into enough homes. Unlike Microsoft, the Sony Games Division has been (isn't now) the central pillar for their profitability.
I think things are looking up for Sony, next years games should drive sales up, however I think a further price cut in the Xbox 360 or even the Wii could be disastorous for Sony.
Re: Not enough
Seeing as last month they sold $500m of shares to the UAE government which apparently equates to around a measly 1% of the company, I think they have a LONG way to go before anything becomes disastrous for them.
Things are really on the up for the PS3, and next year's range of games including some exclusives will really help sales. Bluray sales are massively on the up - far more than HD-DVD - and developers are not only just getting more and more to grips with the PS3 hardware, they are now starting development on multi-platform titles on the PS3.
Re: Not enough
I agree, this is good news for Sony. But they must realise that until they actually promote the machine as a games console, they will not catch either the 360 or the Wii. The figures speak for themselves -
285% increase in sales.
Still sold 304,000 consoles less than Xbox 360.
So the difference in the installed base is widening.
Re: Not enough
Who cares about growth ? When you start with a very low number, growth will be always very high.
This is what devs and publishers care :
PS3 = 466K
360= 770K
Re: Not enough
PS3 will win in the end. The price cut is only just beginning to spur sales. I've been waiting for it to come to $399 but now that it has still can't buy one as someone could get me one for Xmas. If I don't have one on 12/25 I certainly will on 12/26. I'm sure there's plenty of others that now plan on getting one, they just haven't rushed right out yet. I have nothing against xbox either, I just want the blueray player, overall it's a better bargin and with 1/3rd of xbox's failing I''m not and never will be willing to take a chance on it. I've always bought Nintendo from NES to Gamecube. Tried the Wii and was very unimpressed. Looks terrible on a largescreen HDTV and the gimmick wore off for me in one day of playing the top tier titles for the system (metroid, mario, zelda, wii sports/play & resident evil).
Growth
The main reasons PS3 isnt doing so great verses the opposition is simply due to the games, people are waiting for the big names to arrive (I know I am). Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, when these are released prepare to see an explosion of activity for the PS3.
