Hirai: Games are now our focus

Sony president says console is on track to sell 11m by the end of March as momentum continues to build

Sony’s PlayStation president Kaz Hirai has said that his company is on track to sell 11 million PS3 consoles by the end of its financial year, and that software will be the main focus for the firm going forwards.

Sony has previously stated that the PS3’s integrated hi-def Blu-Ray drive and multimedia features would form the crux of the company’s marketing push.

However, speaking of a new start after a troubled first 12 months on the market, Hirai stated: "PS3 is starting afresh as a console to play games with. Although pricing strategy is important, now we would like to put our strength in the number of software games," the Associated Press reports.

And of Sony’s PlayStation operations, Hirai added: "We want to escape as soon as possible from the red and return to the black in fiscal year 2008."

The confidence follows recent Japanese success which saw the PS3 outsell Wii over a four week period for the first time, whilst the machine’s sales tripled over the Thanksgiving holiday week in the US.
