Analyst predicts that after Wii’s domination of 2007, Sony’s PS3 will stage a comeback in 2008
There’s no arguing that Nintendo staged a remarkable recovery in 2007 to emerge as the overall gaming champions at the expense of rivals Microsoft, and in particular, Sony – but analyst firm Screen Digest says 2008 could prove to be the year of PS3.
Citing the growing number of exclusive titles heading to the machine, and upcoming multimedia services like recordable TV and PS3 Home, Screen Digest’s Piers Harding-Rolls stated: "One of the market shifts to watch out for in 2008 will be the continued evolution of Xbox 360 and PS3 from games consoles to multi-media hubs.
“Now that these multi-media services, online video, IPTV, digital terrestrial TV and PVR functionality, are now available or poised to come on line in different markets, this 'hub' strategy is emerging as a key console battleground for Microsoft and Sony."
Even throughout the recent period of Wii dominance, Screen Digest has always backed PS3 to win through. But with Wii forging such a large lead in global hardware sales, there will be many who remain to be convinced that Sony can play catch-up.

I completely agree
2008 will be the year of the PS3. It has all the killer apps. Very little interesting on the 360 next year and the fad of the Wii will reach its peak this holiday season and go down from there.
Re: I completely agree
What a joke! 2008 will see the playstation 3 loose ground even further to the Xbox 360. There are virtually no games available for it at the moment. Multi-format games are developed on the xbox 360, and they play better on the 360 because it has better designed hardware.
The PS3 is suffering. All the cool dudes at my college have a Xbox 360. Who buys a console for Blu-ray?

"The PS3 is suffering. All the cool dudes at my college have a Xbox 360. Who buys a console for Blu-ray?"
Exactly gamers buy consoles for games... anything else is a bonus... except your paying for blu-ray when you pay for the console
Re: I completely agree
It is not just a case of hoping 2008 will be the year of the PS3 for console bragging rights, but in my opinion 2008 HAS to be the year of the PS3 for no other fact than if it isn't, then this console format will be in big trouble.
To date, the PS3 has had the excuse of not having released any major system sellers yet. However, with big releases like MGS4, Little Big Planet & GT5 due out in 2008, as well as the Home hub, if 2008 is not the year of PS3 then I would start to question the future of PS3.
It will be an interesting year, as the latest AAA release on PS3 - Uncharted, is almost just that - uncharted. This can not be allowed to happen to other such releases next year.
So, whilst the PS3 may wish to beat it's chest about upcoming big release titles in 2008, if these do not translate into increased console & software sales for Sony, then 2008 may spell the beginning of the end for the PS3.
I am not saying this is going to happen - but am just pointing out the fact that 2008 HAS to be the year of the PS3 if it is to win the console war, like most analysts are still predicting.
Re: I completely don't agree
Developers are actually now switching multi platform title development to start on PS3 rather than 360 / PC. Check out the latest issue of Develop magazine if you don't believe me. The Cell chip is a wonderful and powerful piece of kit and the next generation of PCs and Xbox will most likely use a similar processor. Before you say anything about GPUs and Memory, actually do some research on the Cell chip (there are PLENTY of websites detailing it) qnd you'll see that the PS3 really has massive potential.
Games on the XBox haven't really shown great differences from early titles to todays titles - look at Halo 3, it's not even hi-def - but PS3 titles are already showing far better promise. Look at early PS1 titles compared to late PS1 titles, early PS2 titles to late PS2 titles and you will see massive improvement in frame rate, graphics etc. This will happen on the PS3 because of the Cell and when programmers get more to grips with it. Gran Turismo on the PS3 is really going to blow people away.
Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of the 360 and it has good stuff on it (if a few too many similar FPS, however) and a fan of the Wii too as it is great fun, but the Wii is good only for short amounts of time and I think it's poor graphics on modern TVs is a big let down, whereas the PS3 is rapidly improving.
Multiplatform titles are sometimes better on the 360 to the PS3 at present (Madden), sometimes worse (Oblivion) and other times identical (Assassin's Creed). And as rightly pointed out above, there appears to be a great deal more on the horizon for the PS3 in 08 than the 360 - Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet to name but a few.
Once these games are out you will see a massive surge in PS3 sales I am sure. It happened with the last gen consoles in the same way, in 2000/01 there was not a great deal to shout about on the PS2 front and many people kept to their PS1s. Then along came some killer titles and BOOM! It's going to happen again. People are being careful with their spending these days, they don't see the point in upgrading to a PS3 yet when there's still life in their PS2. But that will change in 2008. I don't see why people get so upset about the PS3s success. If your an XBox owner, why do you worry, why do you keep posting the same nonsense on the same sites day after day? It is in my opinion that you are in fact deeply worried about the sucess of the PS3 over the 360 because you may be forced to buy yet another Xbox console within a couple of years (ie 3 consoles in 9 years), whereas PS owners have only had to buy 2 consoles in 10...
Re: I completely don't agree
(PS My title refers to that I don't agree with the posts by Rya & Chris above) Also, please not the following spelling/grammar errors I made -
1) qnd -> and
2) it's poor graphics -> its poor graphics
3) your and XBox -> you're an XBox..
It's been a long day/weekend!
Re: I completely agree
"All the cool dudes at my college have a Xbox 360."
That sounds like reason enough to buy a PS3 instead.
ClubPit
I disagree about your disagreement.
"Also, please not the following spelling/grammar errors I made"
Err, I think you made another spelling mistake there!
I don't think that's necessarily the case, I can appreciate the PS3 being the best console out there technically and it probably is.
But great specs make not a winning console. The Nintendo console is a prime example of this point.
Microsoft have some high ambitions about XBox in general that have nothing to do with games, so to them, it's a Trojan Horse to put them under the TV sets of billions of people - simply because the PC continues to fail to do that for them.
Sony is doing a pretty good job of alienating their own PlayStation fans. What with poor console sales (so far and it's now a year old, let's not forget), extortionate pricing, backwards incompatibility with PS2, delayed Home, unbalanced PSN pricing and shoddy releases/ports of games that run smoothly on the X360.
I don't think you can gloss over with the magic wand that is CELL BE, as much as I respect the development efforts behind it. I know because I work for one of them and have seen the specs well before it was made public!
I just do not agree that a processor can single-handedly save the day for a console manufacturer that seems to have lost its way and continues to remain arrogant.
The best way to look at it is to learn from this industry's history and there are plenty of examples from the past when David triumphed over Goliath.
Re: I disagree about your disagreement.
Hmm, I don't know man, I think you're a bit off on your claims here. It's already been widely spoken of, that the 360's first year sales has been matched/exceeded by the PS3's first year sales. That's the first problem with your argument. Secondly, considering Sony is losing $200ish per console, I fail to see how that's extortionate pricing. Thirdly, the high-end version of the PS3 is still backwards compatible. If you're a faithful Sony fan, and want backwards compat...pay the extra money. Fourthly, Sony isn't responsible for shoddy ports to it's system, unless they're first party titles. 3rd party publishers like Activision, EA, Valve, and so on, are more than adequately sized businesses to develope a correct title for the PS3...if they so desire. Or...they can cry, **** and moan like babies, and farm it to an in-house developer like Orange Box. I don't blame Sony for the ****ty games that other companies put out, I blame the publishers/developers. (No Orange Box here, Dave Newell...eat it).
A strange thing to note here, many 1st party developers, and somet 3rd party developers are having none of these so-called, 'developement' issues on the PS3. Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Ninja Theory, Epic/Midway, etc..., these folks are putting together some insanely fun games for the PS3, and very highly detailed... I garuntee you that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, looks better than any/all games in 'Orange Box', so explain that to me. Naughty Dog can put out Uncharted, and Valve/EA fails to deliver....or even CARE about what they deliver to their fans in Orange Box? That's a load of garbage, and blaming Sony for that is ridiculous.
Now, considering the PS3 had to contend with not just the Wii, but an already established userbase and developing regimen for the 360, I think, all things considered, the PS3 has done suprisingly well, given it's lack of their huge exclusives. And yet, it still managed to maintain the 360's first year sales? Interesting everyone considers this a huge failure.... Another thing to consider, the 120 million people who own PS2's, have yet to seriously cast their lot with any of the new consoles, as is shown by to-date sales of these items. The real question is, and the deciding factor in this war, is will they choose the 360, the Wii, or are they predominately awaiting the release of the serious heavy-hitters (Gran Turismo 5, Tekken 6, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, etc...). Ultimately, time will tell, but to call this race certain at this point is a serious miscalculation, in my opinion.
Re: I disagree about your disagreement.
The most powerful console never won any console war in the 35-year console history. PS3 will have hard days.
Re: I disagree about your disagreement.
PS3 has a lot of catching up to do. It is still being outsold by both Wii and 360 by a large margin. Therefore the gap in the total userbase is getting wider. Thats why the exclusives sell so badly. Most don't even get into the weekly top ten charts. Why should anyone continue to pour money down the drain developing for a console that sells so few games? Also, how is the PS3 going to convince anyone that its so powerful when the graphics chip is not as good as on the 360. First impressions count for a lot. If 360 graphics look better or as good, then why spend more for a PS3 that has less games, no backwards compatibility and a poor live network.
Re: I disagree about your disagreement.
Man you're an idiot! Have you actually read the above comments on PS3's sales matching 360's in the first year? Less powerful graphics chip!?! that's odd, see, I was under the impression PS3 could handle full HD 1080p visuals... yeah sounds like another poorly informed 360 fan to me.
Look at your release schedule for the year ahead and then reconsider your post, and your choice of console!
I hope Sony do it
They have done it in the past and they can do it again. However they have a number of disadvantages.
1) The PS3 is too expensive to make. They have no room to get into price competition with the 360.
2) They are a long way behind in the number of AAA exclusives. This is the main reason for buying one console instead of another.
3) They currently have only half the global installed base of the 360, so games have only half the sales potential.
4) Xbox Live gives Microsoft a huge competetive advantage. And they are putting a lot of effort into making it even better.
5) The Wii has caniballised development resources.
6) Yes, the PS3 has a less powerful GPU than the 360. It is strange that Sony did this.

Re: I hope Sony do it
Now this is getting silly. 360 graphics looking better than PS3. Indeed! What a load of BS. Perhaps you haven't seen Drake's (Uncharted) yet on the PS3. A proper Hi Def game unlike Halo 3. Drake's looks far better than ANY game in the history of gaming on any console (imho). I have Bioshock and that looks superb but it's nothing a PS3 cannot already do - after all the game is running on the Unreal engine and that's now been highly modified for the PS3.
The second best looking game in the world is Heavenly Sword. Notice something about both these games I've mentioned - PS3 EXCLUSIVES... For the games on both systems, they look pretty much identical. Assassin's Creed was mentioned above and don't believe ANY of these comparison videos on the web. The PS3 versions looks and plays every bit as well as the 360 game. Both versions are top notch.
But in the near future you're going to see full 1080p Gran Turismo on the PS3, personally my favourite racing game of all time. If you then try and tell me that the 360 has better graphics then you clearly need to go to SpecSavers.
I could talk to you all day about multi-threaded programming, GPUs, CPUs etc. but I won't bore 99% of the people here with things they don't understand. But lets just say that as things are changing rapidly in today's development world, things are swiftly moving towards the PS3 approach. Ports are affected a huge amount by developers not using the SPEs on the CELL and running on just the CELL's PPE - meaning the 360 has the benefit of its 3 cores where as the PS3 is just using one. But it is changing. Neither Microsoft or Sony are stupid enough to put hardware in their machines that isn't up to the job. Both took different approaches to the design and at the moment, the benefit is with the 360 on mulit-platform titles. It comes down to getting a balance between CPU and GPU - not which has the faster. Yes the GPU on the 360 is faster than the one on the PS3, but you don't program for just the GPU. You could have the fastest GPU in the world, but if you don't have the CPU it's worthless. It requires balance. However, the CPU on the 360 has three cores which share a meager 1mb L2 cache, which is fine for single threaded games but as developers move towards multi-threaded engines, this cache will definitely become a performance limiter.
Let's just say that as chips move more and more towards the style of the CELL, programming techniques are moving more this way as well. And this is before one of the biggest problems of all with the 360 - the lack on in built high capacity storage device. Games are going to increase in size more and more and the fact the PS3 has a 50gb Blu Ray drive to store all of those wonderful high definition graphics which will help sell more games is a huge plus to developers. It isn't just the superior specs of the PS3 which are going to drive developers towards it, it is the fact that in the future if they don't get their heads around these kinds of programming techniques and increased storage capacity, then they will be out of the business in a few years as they haven't caught up.
BTW I don't have a PS3 yet, I have a 360, but having been round a friend's house recently and seen for myself the quality games, Blu Ray and all the other cool gimmicks on it, I'm getting one after Xmas if I don't get one for Xmas. However, people always have a choice, there are many people out there that hate Sony and will never choose their product, and there are many (probably more to be honest) that hate Microsoft and won't buy from them. So there'll always be room for the two. Just enjoy whichever you choose. Don't get upset when your console starts losing out, do what I will do and switch.
Finally one small point, it has been noted by some developers that the Wii is actually the hardest platform of all to develop for - it is a faze and when people decide that they've outgrown the Wii, personally I can see more people migrating to the PS3 than the 360.
Re: I hope Sony do it
My god, I was had the energy to invest in being so passionate about such a mundane subject. Enjoy whatever console you have and don't worry about the rest.
Not mundane
Video gaming will grow to be the main entertainment media in the world, surpassing TV, film and music. This is inevitable because gaming has the innate advantages of interactivity, connectivity and non linearity. We are just at the beginning of this.
The console wars now are important, not because they cost the combatants many billions of dollars, but because success will be worth hundreds of billions of dollars over the coming decades. The stakes are almost unprecedented in any business ever.
Certainly if the dire performance of PS3 continues it could inflict a mortal wound on Sony as a company.
