DS smashes UK hardware record

Sells over 200,000 in week ending December 1st, whilst Wii passes Xbox 360’s UK installed base

It seems that the only thing pegging back Nintendo’s remarkable sales achievements at the moment is its ability to get hardware on the High Street – but that hasn’t stopped the DS Lite smashing the UK weekly hardware sales record that it had set only the week before.

in the week ending December 1st Nintendo’s handheld sold 212,584 units – a fair chunk more than the previous weeks sales record of 191,104, according to sales data from UK stats body ChartTrack.

Until now the PS2 had been the long-standing record holder, following the 184,360 units it sold in Christmas week in 2001.

Nintendo UK's general manager David Yarnton stated: “With its wide appeal and unique software, Nintendo DS continues to expand the gaming audience and continues to appeal to everyone.

"The vast range of software being created for both avid gamers and new gamers of all ages has ensured a wide variety of unique titles are available. With New Touch! Generation title, Sight Training, and more traditional games like The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, we are looking forward to an exciting Christmas season.”

In addition to all of this, Nintendo’s other big success story, the Wii, sold over 100,000 units in the same week – and its total sales have now surpassed those of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, despite arriving on the market almost a year after Microsoft’s machine.

Sony are in trouble now.

Oh dear. Sony are trailing behind in the Number 3 slot with PS3, I guess.

Not good.

Again, like in the other thread, you think of these things in the most cretinous possible way.

But it's not just about the games, think about everything else you can do on a PSP - you can buy movies on UMD!

If you buy a PS3, and a copy of Lair!

How sad that someone still views graphics as the defining factor. Clearly, great graphics and gameplay go together, but graphics don't necessarily make a good game, they only enhance what is good if it is already has it.

At the moment, customers are buying the DS and Wii in their millions because they are offering something different!

Clever marketing and this generations Nintendo's systems are proving to the videogames industry obsessed with a PC-like drive to push better graphics, that customers also want fun, quick and enjoyable family games as well as absorbing hard-core games with better graphics.

As a one time PC owner now converted to the MAC and 360, I now shy away from the graphical (and expensive) tour-de-force with mediocre gameplay.

Zelda Phantom Hourglass, has gameplay in heaps and bounds beyond anything even LIVE can offer, and is defined by beautiful graphics that are filled with character and incredible animation.

PS3 - George Foreman Grill
Wii60 - Gaming heaven.

I would have to say that it goes back to Sony's core problems - their marketing communication. The DS 'seems' much more accessible to the 'mass market' audience, it's user friendly, simple and straight forward, the PSP has so many functions and can do so much that it puts off the casual user!

The PSP offers nothing new to non-traditional gamers other than bein****runken down PS2. Other features such as UMD etc are not going to attract anyone new - only those who would be buying the PSP anyways.
In contrast, just like the Wii, the DS offers a completely new gaming dynamic, as well as a much more user friendly medium to the casual games market.
It is true that the PSP has better graphics (obviously - can't believe someone had to point this out) - and maybe if the sales were split into hardcore & casual gamers, the PSP would appear competitive in the hardcore gamer market alone when compared to the DS. Fact is however that sales figures include all gamers, and it is for this reason that the DS will continue to be the best selling games console for the immediate future.
Anyways, just because the PSP is not achieving the same sales figures as DS, does not mean it is not selling well. I would still consider the PSP to be a successful handheld, especially recently - just not to the extent of the DS.

Sales are artificially high

I'm not doubting the selling power of the Wii or DS in the slightest, but if you consider that some people have bought 50 to 100 units to make some money from ebay then this figure seems a little disproportional. If they sold through all the units they had, then fair enough, but at the current rate, many aren't selling.

If you then look at the fact that people aren't doing the same with the 360's various skus or the PS3, then the sales of nintendo hardware do seem a little high.

"People are buying to 50 to 100 units to sell on ebay" - I assume you are referring to the Wii/DS. If they are being sold on ebay they are still being sold right ? The reason why people do this to make money is because of the huge demand - I do not believe this artificially inflates the sales figures - in opposite, the fact that people are having to resort to ebay etc to purchase the Wii is instead an indication that the sales figures would be considerably higher if Nintendo were able to meet demand. I must surely be missing your point, as I do not see the relevance of this at all.
I think you will find that demand for DS's and Wii's are as high as claimed and are not exaggerated in comparison to the 360 or PS3.

Fair points, one and all, i have to agree with one or two of them. I know the ds has some original games but you haven't mentioned all the PS2 game ports you can buy on the PSP.

And have you seen the slightly slimmer new PSP? It's a little bit lighter than the original too, sexy or what. And it still plays all the best PSP games.

Go out and buy one guys!!

Nice summing up there Alia, however… I think we're forgetting something here… let's not forget… LAIR! You can play Lair via remote play on your PSP! All you need is a PS3, an internet connection, a PSP, another internet connection and a copy of LAIR!!!

Everyone here seems to have fair points, i have both PSP and DS and my PSP has been gathering dust for the past 7 months, As for the Wii, 360 and PS3 i now have a Wii and 360, which i play equally the PS3 i had for around 4 days and after trying to get online for 3 of those days i may consider getting another one when some newer games come out and they fix the problem i was having connecting to the net.

But all in all i love playing my wii and DS and nothing with change that. graphics aren't the most important thing in gaming its the experience that you get from the games, and nintendo always offer first class ga*****xperiences with superb graphics.
