Tretton: PS3 has become leading development platform

SCEA boss says that studios are beginning to develop primarily for PS3 and then porting down to other platforms
The boss of Sony America, Jack Tretton, has claimed in an interview with IGN that developers are increasingly adopting PS3 as their lead platform and then ‘porting down’ the titles from Sony’s machine to rival platforms.
"We are now starting to see developers creating games on PS3 and then porting them to other platforms, such as EA's Burnout Paradise," Tretton stated.
"Developers are telling us that they are starting to create their games on PS3 first and take advantage of the hardware capabilities and then port down to other platforms so we are seeing tremendous progress from the third party community in terms of what they are able to do with our development kits.
"You will see some very nice things in 2008 coming from our third party partners in addition to what you will see this holiday."
Paradise is the first high-profile multiformat title to see PS3 as the lead platform, though developers such as Infinity Ward have proven that developing games for both PS3 and Xbox 360 should not automatically result in a dip of quality for the Sony product – as can be seen with its recent chart-topper Call of Duty 4.

Thats just ONE yes ONE game, and EA is the publisher of that game and Criterion are the developers.
Other than that there are NO other cross platform developers making games on the PS3 first in most or all cases its PC first then 360 then ported to PS3.
This is not fanboy talk this is a fact, I admired Jack for his way of talking of being more down to earth now it seems he has jumped on the stupidity bandwagon.

actually dude it is true this is how it worked out.
Unreal tournament 3 is also a ps3 lead platform game
so is dmc4, and assassin's creed.
i do remember that their were a few more but they don't seem to be coming up into my head.

Read it properly Ryu. The article starts off saying "studios are beginning to develop" so that means new projects, i.e. ones the general public don't actually know about and future games you will be playing in 1-2+ years. Beginning is the key word used here.
If anyone is looking stupid, it's you Ryu.

The only reason developers are starting on PS3 and porting to other formats is because thats the ONLY way they can make cross platform games without a drop in quality and without wasting time.
There is no other reason. Period.

Everywhere you go on the internet these days is just full of people arguing about their consoles. Its horrible. People who have never met each other just ranting about things they really know nothing about. How much do any of you really know apart from what is published on the internet? Even then how reputable is this information.
It's disgusting the way everyone is treating each other based on their console of choice. It's like modern day racism and its cringeworthy reading it.

See, I read this as "all those companies that were producing PS3 exclusives.....well they ain't any more they're all on their way to 360 and even the Wii". Good old sony, heavy on the spin.
as for Wratty - it's a public discussion forum, what do you expect, being able to remain anonymous gives people the ability to behave muppets in total safety.
It's not really racisum, more of a kind of tribalisum or xenophobia.

what i find stupid is the adverts for the new burnout, it is on both PS3 and 360, yet the adverts only mention PS3. Why they want to shoot themselves in the shoot with a "loss of sales" gun is beyond me, surely advertising every way you can get something is a better option?

I'm with Wratty on this one.
I hate it, and i hate Sony, for ruining the gaming industry - i wish their console would go away and die.

Sorry, I disagree, Sony played the major part in getting consoles to the mass recognition they get today. Don't let your obvious bias mask the facts. Give credit where it is due. If Sony had not made such a mint from PS1 and PS2, Microsoft would have never got into the Games console market. As it is, they are on only their 2nd console and its brilliant. This is mainly due to the fact that they had to compete with Sony. Thats why they got to the market first, to grow market share. And, if it ever does happen that PS3 starts to catch up, the inevitable will happen Microsoft will move up another gear and bring something else out maybe 3 years before the end of the famed PS3 10 year lifespan. Sony wont recover from that.

You kids don't have a clue. I am assuming children, due to the lack of knowledge and inaccurate information. I would hope adults would be more intelligent in doing research prior to posting false information on the Internet.
Some of the major developers have stated they are moving to the PS3 as the lead platform due to system strengths and ease of porting to the 360. Amoung those?
Electronic Arts
UbiSoft
Midway
Square-Enix
It makes sense to use this method as developers are in the industry for money. They want to make money from both platforms, not just one. To achieve this, they need to release solid products on both systems. The old method used, 360 port PS3 is not working well. Other developers who have lead on the PS3 are showing their ability to port easily to the 360.
It only makes sense.

And what ? Burnout ? Only one title ? Give me a break.
EA games on PS3 were ****. 360 versions owned them all. Maybe we'll have now a decent EA game on PS3.

ok you punks, i've had enough of this PS3 bashing.
You just try naming me 10 Wii exclusive and 10 Xbox360 exclusive games, that are out now, that are good. And i will name you 10 amazing PS3 exclusive games you can buy now.

HALO BIOSHOCK BLUE DRAGON PGR3 PGR4
GEARS OF WAR FORZA 2 SAINTS ROW CONDEMNED
DEAD OR ALIVE 4 DEAD RISING MASS EFFECT MOTO GP07 There are more, but I will be interested to see your list as I can only think of one game that looks decent on PS3 and thats Uncharted. And that didnt even get into the top 10 in the charts, even the week of release. Just like that Ratchet and Clank dross. Hardly sold.
I dont even know 10 Wii games as I am over 9. Right, lets see you 10 Amazing games.

You missed out the game of the year in my book, Crackdown.
Brilliant game that suffered at ther awards for coming out so early.

If Assassin's Creed was a ps3 game then they failed miserably, as the eurogamer review decribed it, " the PS3 rendition is a mocking shadow of the Xbox 360 version".
More powerful or not, someone somewhere needs to start delivering as it is all about the games which is why the ps2, more expensive and less powerful than the xbox outsold it for the machines entire life because it had the games the public wanted to play and they were frankly good enough for that public at large when multi format who didn't think buying another system to get a few more polys and textures was worth it.

I also missed out Lost Planet , Fight Night 3, Ace Combat 6 and quite a few more. But I didnt have to think so hard did I ? there are so many. I think Crackdown is brilliant as well.
I need to comment on Nynjas mail. What you say is correct - developers should need to put out solid products for both platforms. But have you considered why 360 to PS3 does not work? Its because PS3 is very hard to convert to. Thats why all the games that have been developed on 360 are way better on it than they are on PS3. Why should they be? PS3 cannot even do backwards compatiblilty with PS2 since it was downgraded. I think PS3 to 360 should work easier, but hope the graphics can be improved to take advantage of the 360's superior GPU.

Holy Wow. Gavin, control yourself. I appreciate your dedication to Sony, and especially Jack Tretton. However your language is way out of bounds! I can't even work out the 3rd word that got censored even is! It can't be the obvious choice since the whole word would have gone.
In any case, I'm sure the PS3 will do well over the next 10 years - in the meantime, I guess those nintendo m*****r ****ing ****ers are doing very well for themselves, and the industry.
Merry ****ing Christmas Gavin.

Its funny how the one guy slamming the 360 and backing the PS3 writes his comments like a 9 year old texting to a mate. Is this the demographic that is buying all the **** games on PS3?
As far as I was aware, although it may not add up on paper in black and white, the GPU on the 360 can process a bigger chunks of data slightly faster than the PS3 with less programming which in theory makes it superior.
I dont know if thats true or not but I'm pretty sure I read it in EDGE somewhere. Not that that means anything but you know what I'm getting at......
I agree with comment NO:9 and disagree with comment NO:10. However, I feel that Microsoft are now equally as much to blame as Sony for ruining the industry.
The Sony have messed everything up and now that Microsoft are involved, the two of them are messing up together.
Dont get me wrong, there are plenty of great games that probably wouldnt have existed today if these companies hadnt got involved but there would have been equally as many great games if they hadnt.
Making the industry mass market hasnt improved anything at all. All its done is allow the industry to be run by people who know everything about sales and marketing but nothing about games. Its also allowed things like 'little Britain' and soon 'Eastenders' to get videogame counterparts, which I think it disgusting and an insult to all the people that invested in games prior to 1995 and supported the industry from day one.
It has happened in the last 15 years to the Music and Film industries but these we're mediums that we're already established before they we're stripped of their soul.
Gaming was and is still in its infancy and has barely shed its training bra but its already being raped by the fat cats who only care about how much money they'll make before year end.
So, porting from PS3 to 360 or 360 to PS3, does it really matter?
When its something like Need for Speed Pro street 3 (or whatever it is EA have just released) I dont think it does.

In Theory, the PS3 is more powerful than 360 This is a fact.
The 360 Graphics Chip is more powerful and also more versatile than the one in PS3 This is also a fact. What this means is that the more powerful CPU is coupled to the least powerful GPU. In the end, there is very little difference in theory between the two. The only noticeable difference at the moment is that the PS3 is way more harder to program. Therefore, to develop on 360 then port over to PS3 causes problems with slowdown, etc. Porting from PS3 to 360 has problems too, but as the 360 was developed as a Games Machine, not a Jack of all Trades, it is much easier to get things running right. Once people have a better understanding of how to get PS3 working, these problems will lessen. But, the best games on each machine will still end up being very similar, and the only people who will be able to tell any difference will be the Fanboys, who will see everything on their chosen machine as superior.

What a sad bunch of fanboys you lot are. Can't you just decide to accept your console and what others also have?
I decided to sit out the 360, due to it's lack of essentials required for this gen, and waited for the PS3, and frankly, I'm glad I did.
“Re: “Re: Sad Sad Sad””

The funniest thing on MCVUK is hearing someone cry 'fanboy!' and then waffle on about their favourite console.
What 'essentials' does the PS3 have that the xbox360 doesn't? An 'essential' shortage of quality titles?
Anyhow, it's Christmas time! Let's all try to get along!

The fact that so much effort is being put into comments on the PS3 shows it is becoming a real winner. The leader always gets the most criticism. Like we say in Holland, high trees encounter more wind.
So thank you for the compliments.
We do not know if publishers are seeing PS3 as there leading development platform but we will know in the future. where there is smoke, there is fire though.
what the best platform is? who knows. At least the market is big enough for multiple platforms not just one. So do not worry, your X-box can still be used for some time.
Backwards compatibility is pathetic, as I only want the best on screen, not old s**t.
Brgds,
Hendrik
p.s. forgive any language issues.

Wow Henrik, nice arguament - if someone discusses or points out the faults with something it must be doing well, I assume that if no one pointed out anything wrong with it, it'd be doing well as well. Superb arguament.
I'm smiling at Sony's claim of Ps3 pre-xmas sales hike (or spike) thanks to one game coming in at 28 and the other not making the top 40, thats how well the machines doing. No28 is not soaring, Wii is soaring, 28 is nowhere.
Better hope next year's a whole lot better.
