Former Microsoft boss says he ‘bristles’ when people criticise lack of originality in publisher’s titles
President of EA Sports Peter Moore has hit out at those who brand the publisher as having a lack of innovation.
Speaking to GameDaily, Moore called the idea that the company’s sports games are unoriginal as “one of the biggest misconceptions in the industry”.
He added that the reason he left Microsoft to join the label was because it had “innovated and been a leader for decades”.
Moore commented:
“What I've always admired about this place, and EA Sports in particular, has been the company's ability to consistently create compelling, broad-based interactive entertainment while riding the ups and downs of technology without ever stumbling.
We've innovated and been a leader for decades, and that's not easy. EA created a genre with the EA Sports brand, and when you look at how we established and then have consistently innovated in the sports category, it's obvious that EA Sports has not ridden the wave; we've driven the wave.
“Our games have become more and more complicated and complex, and we often get dogged for one of the biggest misconceptions in the entire industry – a lack of innovation year in and year out on annually iterated titles. I bristle at times when I hear this, because nothing could be farther from the truth.”

Isn't that a picture of when he used to be at Microsoft? Doesn't EA have new PR photos of him to give out yet?
I don't think EA would see originality if it jumped up and down in front of them and wore a cheerleader uniform and shouted:
"Give me an O-R-I-G-I-N..." etc.
I would say two things though. I don't know how good Kane & Lynch is as a game but to me, it's premise seems more suited to a film and it should be promoted to become one.
The last EA game I played and enjoyed was SHOX on the PS2. Don't know if it came out on other formats but I found it sooo lovely to play. An arcade racer with lots of style and pizazz that made it a real joy to play with friends in 4-player split screen mode etc. It had an almost Sega Arcade feel to it and that was one of its appeals.
"Our games have become more and more complicated and complex" - hmm, isn't that saying the same thing twice?!

seems like press releases are just 100% pure propaganda spin these days
he just says buzzword after buzzword, where are the actual facts and figures for all this supposed 'innovation'
this really is a baffling lie, EA are the most 'paint by numbers' dev going

ZedZee why are you commenting on Kane & Lynch, thats not an EA game its Eidos published. Get your facts right before you open that wide mouth of yours.
I agree EA sucks and they will always do even when innovation comes out naked from a cake

He is just brown nosing the company since he went to EA, and there is no way in hell EA sports have got more complicated or harder to make infact ALL EA games have just gotten worse and worse with shoddy gameplay and some cases visuals and overall innovation has been seriously lacking.
I tell you what was innovation, when NFS: Hot Pursuit 1 and NFS: Road Challenge were out they had movies/slides of your fave cars, full commentary and specs of every car and all history details and gameplay was fantastic.

I so used to respect PM when he worked for MS. E3 shows etc were a great laugh. Then he comes up with this twaddle and it all goes wrong.
Innovation very rarely ends with a number, Peter...

While it is oh so fashionable to hate on EA, they are a successful company. That doesn't come from nothing. You can't just sell **** and keep your revenues as high as these guys do. EA Sports alone is around a $1B business.
That said, this comment from Peter and the other one recently from Kathy (new head of EA's casual game group) are really weirding me out. I know changing the public perception of EA as a "same old ****" publisher is on their to-do list. But, uh...guys...you need to actually execute/perform BEFORE you go out and make these statements. Sure MySims was a different take on The Sims and OK the new thing with Speilberg isn't what you usually do and fine this year's FIFA is finally bringing gameplay worthy of a battle with Winning Eleven...oh and Spore and ArmyOfTwo look interesting. But, these little flashes do not a culture or public perception of innovation make. Heck, last I looked you guys just shut down your Chicago studio for not monetizing innovation fast enough.
Here's what most of us see from your company: racing sequel, sports sequel, Sims sequel...see where I'm going with this? I know why don't get me wrong - Wall St. loves the regular revenue. But, know that when you go out and talk about innovation people compare your statements to ground-breaking new indie games and wonder what the hell you're smoking. If innovation is so bedrock...why don't we see radical new game mechanics from EA instead of little 3 person startups? Because, like Hollywood, EA is too big and risk adverse to try anything too crazy. Fine. I get that. Just don't tell me you're suuuch an innovator. It's an insult to those who actually are.

I have'nt bought an EA game since Madden? on the original Xbox. I cant name One new IP (game) from EA that I would buy. There stratergy seems similar currently to that of microsoft and there Xbox360 where they hace a lot of sequeals produce themselves, the same can be said of nintendo to some degree what with mario, zelda, metroid, etc. But if you check ps3 games such as uncharted, resistance,motorstorm,heavenlysword,lair-yes even lair, warhawk there all brand NEW first time titles. go Sony.

I haven't played most of the NFS sequels, so I was interested to see Ryu say "I tell you what was innovation, when NFS: Hot Pursuit 1 and NFS: Road Challenge were out they had movies/slides of your fave cars, full commentary and specs of every car and all history details and gameplay was fantastic"
In fact, Ryu, those of us old enough to remember EA Canada's original NFS on the 3DO system (the horrible PS and Saturn ports don't count) can tell you that it already had all of those features - several years before Hot Pursuit.

Just to clarify my previous comment - the original NFS had a full commentary (ie spoken description) on each car. It did not have in-race commentary.
However, it's worth noting that the fully detailed specs weren't just there for show - they were built into each car's handling by the gloriously obsessive programmers. That was the true innovation of the game, and I understand that it was removed in subsequent iterations.

I thought the bedrock of EA was tired franchises which it can do a minimum to each year before they role them out to a salivating consumer base more akin to wanting the latest trainers than innovative ip.
