4.3m consoles sold in last three months; Halo 3 and Mass Effect sales revealed
Microsoft has revealed a new set of figures following a bumper festive period, according to Reuters. As well as reaching the 17.7m mark in terms of worldwide console sales, the platform holder confirmed that it has shifted 4.3m units in the last three months.
On top of the hardware figures, Microsoft revealed sales data for leading titles Halo 3 and Mass Effect. Microsoft’s Bungie-developed shooter Halo 3 has sold a staggering 8.1 million copies by the end of the year, while Mass Effect shifted 1.6 million.
Xbox 360 also boasts a record-high software attach rate of 6.9, according to NPD.
Microsoft also addressed problems with its Live service, stating that the problems stemmed from a “massive increase” in new users.
“While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance,” said Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten.

Everyone gets a free Live arcade game
And even more good news is that I was on the phone to Xbox support and after being on hold was told that Microsoft will be putting up a FREE XBOX 360 LIVE ARCADE game on the marketplace however no information was give to which one it will be.
I was told that the issues with live was due to unscheduled maintenance perhaps as they said with the increase in live users I guess.
A bit dissapointed with Mass Effect sales but its still done pretty damn well.
Re: Everyone gets a free Live arcade game
Surely it's a bit too early to compare Mass Effect sales with Halo 3 - ME has only been out a couple of months at most.
Re: Everyone gets a free Live arcade game
What about Bioshock sales?
Re: Everyone gets a free Live arcade game
Well HALO 3 was bound to do well and sold tons on the first day.
Bioshock is on PC and 360 though I think they were comparing 2 top 360 exclusives i.e. 360 ONLY titles.
Re: Everyone gets a free Live arcade game
BioShock was published by 2K - Halo 3 and Mass Effect are Microsoft titles. That's why MS has those numbers.
Re: Everyone gets a free Live arcade game
funny how live broke when the update was implemented...and it has been offline for me since...about a month or so! i dont think a free ****py live arcade game i dont want makes up for this! i'm seriously considering getting a wii instead now
Re: Everyone gets a free Live arcade game
Firstly Live didnt go down, nor did it 'break' after the update.
Everyone could still get online at some point but it was never down where you just could not log in, if you couldnt then you are the only one.
Xbox Live is a huge service and the amount of users are increasing so in this case hopefully Microsoft can start to accomodate for the mass increase with more servers which I am sure they will as they would be silly not to.
Hang on!
Erm, hang on a minute, please.
Are all these figures for SHIPPED or SOLD?

If you read the report properly it does state 'SALES'.
Re: Hang on!
Yes, but it also says "it has shifted" - Microsoft does not sell direct, so who did it 'shift' them to?
Usually, 'sales' means shipped, as far as console vendors are concerned. Also, you cannot sell EVERYTHING, you need stock in channel to fulfil demand, and usually (to boost figures) it's better to quote this total figure instead.
Also, if you care to look at the VG Chartz, it puts X360 at 16M, while Nintendo is at a towering 19.5M - so where did Microsoft's figures come from? While if you read EuroGamer, the posts by readers seem far more sensible than here or elsewhere.
I have nothing against Microsoft selling that many (and more) consoles, despite the fact that I don't agree with their strategy for the XBox brand or the changes they're about to announce for it at CES. I just wish MCV would not just quote word-for-word what's in the news release from any vendor; they should do some proper journalistic work and get the exact info.
