Criterion beefs up Burnout demo

EA dev achieves a first in releasing update for online demo weeks ahead of game’s release

In an unusual, but welcome, step developer Criterion has released an update for the existing Burnout Paradise demo on Xbox 360 and PS3, CVG reports.

The patch ups the number of available online competitors from four to eight in multiplayer, and also adds 13 new Freeburn challenges ahead of its release in the UK on January 25th.

The revisions come shortly after the developer posted a strongly-worded response to the criticism that has been levelled at the demo from some quarters of the hardcore gaming fraternity.

In the statement Alex Ward said: “The demo was made after work on Paradise was completed, so no, we won't be using internet 'feedback' to tune the game. Everyone breathe, relax, and remember, it's only a demo - we think we made the best demo released all year - you don't see many other games getting an online enabled demo up on both systems before launch.

“As to those who can proclaim from a taste of the demo that Burnout 2 was the best game (always nice to see all those Gamecube owners on the internet who haven't played the game since B2!) or that B3 is the better game - again, I can only smile.

“The lack of retry really isn't an issue. You may disagree, but we don't feel it is and retry would have introduced loading into the game, which we didn't want to do. In fact, we hate loading with a passion now.”

Well Criterion are stupid then if they released a demo not made on the near final build of the game and if they really want us to believe the final game is way better I know it wont be.

If Pro Street is anything to go by this EA published but Criterion made game (EA own Criterion...) then expect Paradise to be hell.

Did you read the story? They said it was based on the final build. Recommendation - THINK before you TYPE.

Are you kidding me RYU. The exact quote is "The demo was made after work on Paradise was completed."

Now how hard is that to read? Sheesh, the internets is dying!

I know. He's a ****, isn't he...

Personally, though, I was a little disappointed with the demo. Yes, I understand the ethos behind wanting to have away with menu screens and restarts and the like. But the reality is that to the user it's a pain in the ****. I'd take a handy restart option over a menu-free game anyday. Think this might be the first Burnout I don't bother with.

I know what I said and I meant it as a joke, if the developer wont take stick for the near final build of the game aka in the ways of the demo then that means for sure the final game will suck as well.

Usually some demos are made of early builds o***ame not the near final, usually a near final build is very good but in this case a no go.

To those being negative towards me, perhaps in future you should read between the lines and give some valid input before ****ging someone off.

I'm not a huge race fan, but I have yet to see where this game is broken. Yeah there's no retry, but is that a bad thing? Criterion wanted to make a living world, and if you were to street race in the real world you would need to go back to the starting line to retry an event.

Keep in mind, also, that there are going to be events at EVERY LIGHT, which means that if you didn't win an event you can stop at a light close to the end point and start that one. I WILL be getting this game day 1 and am extremely impressed with the demo so far .... my son and I have easily put 5 - 6 hours into that small area and keep going back to it.

Well, hooray...the demo is made from the final game. that means the 360 version will still stutter 2-3 times every block, while the ps3 version runs silky smooth.

way to release an unfinished game. Before EA got into the picture, Criterion wouldn't have released the game until they had every little hitch removed. But here we go, getting Need For Burnout, along with the same frame rate issues the need for speed series seems hell-bent on having in every single iteration.

I'm not complaining that it's not like previous Burnout games. Seriously. I like that each one (except for 3, which was 100% ****) was different (and better) than the previous one. I miss the "interactive" soundtrack from b2, nothing else. there's enough well-done crash sequences in Revenge to make up for the lack of them in Paradise.

Altho I am a bit pissed that you can't rear-end small vehicles anymore. I got really used to that in B-Revenge.

No matter. the framerate hitching is enough to keep me from buying it. if I discover that problem is NOT present in the full version, I'll be getting a copy. I'm not buying a PS3 just to get a hitch-free framerate that I KNOW is possible on the 360.

"We think we made the best demo released all year"

Crackdown says hello.

Strikes me Alex Ward can't take the critism and is ready to jump on anyone who doesn't think his new project is the best gane in the world. Oh, and by the way Alex, I've played through every Burnout to date and have enjoyed all of them, but still Burnout two is my favourite of the series. Prat.

The Gamecube comment was rather desperate. Way to go Alex, attack the very people you want to purchase your new game, ie the fans.

Agreed, Alex Ward clearly can't take the criticism and with this little diatribe has come off looking like a big baby having a temper tantrum. What i***ames reviewer slates your precious new title Alex, are you going to try and force a firing of said reviewer as well?

Its a fine sign of where this industry is heading when developers start acting like colossal *****s.
