CES 2008: HD-DVD conference cancelled

Toshiba gathering scrapped in wake of Warner abandonment

Following the news that Warner is to cease production of HD-DVD movies and instead exclusively support Sony’s rival Blu-Ray format, last night’s CES 2008 North American HD-DVD Promotion Group conference was cancelled.

A statement from the body read: "Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference.

"We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD-DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD-DVD's commitment to quality and affordability – a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format."

And New Line too...

Let's get this straight, many HD-DVD owner have been hanging onto one thing, that Lord of the Rings may see the light of day on HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray.

Well now that New Line are going (as are their parent Warner) to releasing Hi-Def only on Blu Ray, this won't happen. The only place you're going to get Hi-Def LOTR (and Star Wars for that matter) is Blu-ray.

I'm glad this war is over before it got out of hand. Blu-Ray IS the better format and will only improve over time. Now Universal and Paramount just need to see sense (although Paramount were probably paid heavily to back HD-DVD not too long ago and so probably won't be too disappointed).

Yeah you cling on to that one Ryu. And your 360...

Man I feel for you, you probably even have a picture of Bill Gates tattooed somewhere on your body. Probably next to your Zune one...

I'm sorry but to me, all this b**ching is pointless, the general consumer has only just fully adopted DVD and personalIy, I dont really see the point of HD on Disc yet?

I own a PS3 and a 360. I own a respectable Samsung HD 37 inch telly and have all my gear hooked up via HDMI into the screen and optical to my amp.

I own a few Blue ray films and a few HD films and in terms of quality, yes I can see a difference but A: its minimal and B: does nothing to just justify the amount of money I have paid to own these technologies.

Perhaps my T.V isnt good enough?
Perhaps my eyesight isnt very good?

I dont know but I know that right now the best format is DVD and will be for a long time.

With sales on HD DVD and on BLU RAy so low , they may both fail.
Why pay £30.00 plus for a film when you can get one from you mates for £2.00, even before its released.

In Las Vegas after the CES show when I was in a Hotel elevator by myself leaning on the wall after a long day on the CES floor. The elevator stopped on the second level of the casino
about 9 to 10 men came in to the elevator the first few men that came in had seen me but appairently the last ones in did not, they were taller than me and I could not be seen behind the other men. you could tell they were talking about the CES show but some one in the front of the elevator said "I need to buy Time Warner" then it was very quiet an no one said anything else,
just dead quiet. I could see his side but not his face, The elevator door opened and we all steped out and as I walked away I turned around and looked at the man that said "I need to buy Time Warner" It was Bill Gates!
I still dont think he knew I was in the elevator with him. I dont think I was supposed to hear what he said.
