Microsoft: 360 to celebrate record year

Don Mattrick claims that Xbox 360’s 2007 success will prove to be the biggest ever seen in gaming

Microsoft’s games chief Don Mattrick has told staff via a memo, that was subsequently leaked by notorious Xbox insider Dean Takahashi, that the Xbox 360 can win the current console battle after enjoying the most profitable year ever seen in gaming.

The memo read: “According to US NPD data through November, Xbox 360 is on track to register the biggest year in video game history.

“Consumers in North America have spent over $3.5 billion on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories. That’s $1 billion more than consumers spent on the Wii, and $2 billion more than the PS3. When December data is added, we expect Xbox 360 in 2007 to have generated more calendar year revenue than any other gaming platform ever, including PS2 at its peak.

“History has shown that the eventual winner of each console generation was the console that generated the most third party revenue, and according to the most recent NPD data, Xbox 360 generated more third party revenue in 2007 than Nintendo and Sony combined.

“Now, it is our mission to fully deliver on our promise for Xbox 360 to be the console of choice for everyone in the family. Looking ahead, I believe we will close 2008 with Xbox 360 being the leader of this generation of consoles.”

So these figures are nothing to do with the fact both XBox 360 games and consoles cost more than Wii or DS does it....? I'd like to see comparative sales quantities please. MS may have done well in the US but are absolutely being slaughtered by Nintendo and Sony in Japan and Europe. Latest figures I saw for last week in Europe, DS ran away with it selling twice as much as the Wii which was only just higher than the PS3 which itself was slightly ahead of the PS2 and then the PSP shortly behind. The only thing the 360 outsold was the GBA! I'd like to agree with point 2 here. And BTW I'm not a fanboy of any console, but I sell all three in a small family run business. We've seen the market change with our own eyes in the weeks up to Xmas and I'm not fooled by the spin MS use on their figures which are rapidly falling. The 360 is now well and truly on the back foot. Being only a relatively small retailer, we've got to go with the market trends and MS have got to do something pretty special to start turning this around.
